From what I have read it appears the best way to go is cold rolled steel. But no one stocks it in my area just the hot rolled and to have them get it is just crazy money. I have some patch work on cowl/firewall and some other fab work I want to do, is there really a big difference? Or should I hold out for the cold rolled?

You can use hot roll, you just got to grind the mill scale off before welding or it welds like crap.

Where is your area? Cold roll isn't that hard to get.

Metal Supermarket can be good...they sell online, which may be cost effective for smaller pieces (since suppliers that don't stock what you want will probably make you buy whole sheets). They do have locations in Ohio, PA, and KY, so one may be close enough for a day trip depending on where you are in WV.

Like chevynut said. Pick up a couple old hoods or fenders from a junk yard.

For what your doing, hot rolled will be more than enough. 14-16ga sheet would be best.

They are so expensive though. If everyone else around has length minimums, they are a good option, but otherwise, I try to avoid them.
