Who's is this and does he have a thread? I have to build one, no other way around it. Looks like he has lexan windows as well. I just wonder what other kind of small details are not shown in the vid.

Is that a sequential gearbox too?

V8 conversions in Porsches are way cool .
I've seen quite a few in 944's .

What makes you say that? I just saw a regular Porsche shifter and the commentators didn't mention a sequential transmission.

anyone do an LS9 Porsche yet?

John Wright

He needs to add a turbo...LOL, then he can keep the TURBO emblem on the engine deck lid.

I'm not getrag trans guru but that shifter looks like it only goes forward and back.

I'm a naturally aspirated kind of guy. I wouldn't change a thing except a cage and some Recaro seats. I wonder what he has in this project.

How about a 914 w/ an LS?

I have had three 914s in the past. They're really cool little cars- and I'm confident LS power would make one perfect. It's on my list of cars to build!!

If your list of "cars to build" is as long as mine, we are going to have to live until we are 350 years old...:-)

I have allready realized I wont live long enough to finish all the cars I have waiting in line now! Let alone any others that follow me home!

I'll have to say , If I had a choice between an LS7 powered 911 and a new 911 GT3 RS with the turbo 6cyl , I'd pick the GT3 RS turbo 6cyl .
Those cars are wicked !!

love it, and w/ good ol' boy accents too, I can see lots of 'dislikes' being put up on there.

sounds wicked, would love to see it run.

Probably a wevo shifter. The Porsche 930 transaxle is a 4 speed with some pretty wide gears. 2nd gear can get you started if you slip the clutch a bit, and top out at 90MPH. (!)
That's one looong gear in these cars.

Not exactly bolt on, but Kennedy Engineering has been making parts to mate SBCs with Porsche transaxles for years.

I freakin love it. Not sure I would take a pristine car and do that conversion, but maybe one with a blown motor?

I just read a build thread and this particular 930 with the weight reduction is sub 2400lbs. I also saw the dyno sheet from Mast. 705hp! I can't imagine this combo at full throttle. SCARY! I am still thinking the FD rx7 may be my next ultimate street build unless I find one of these for cheap.

Somebody has a really cool Grandpa!
This thing sounds awesome. I'm betting the super short exhaust system may have something to do with the sound.

I would go the factory five GTM route if I wanted something like this.
I like the flat six sound of the Porsche and I think it's part of the uniqueness of the Porsche cars.
Of course that's just my opinion. A 700 HP 3.3L Flat six would probably ring in at 30k and only a handful of tuners could build it.

THese cars out of the box can be a handful to drive with their understeer issues. I can only imagine how much harder this car will be to drive with such a light total weight and all that weight of the LS over the rear tires. The car is probably an animal in a straight line but the handling seems like it would have to be a bigger problem going this route.

dolf
12-24-2011, 07:44 AM
Actually the guy who built said the swap dropped 75 pounds off the rear. He had before and after pics and the suspension is definitely higher after.

DJ Mabe
12-24-2011, 08:47 AM
Maybe after all of his other weight savings but he didn't drop it by swapping that motor in there. The dressed out LS7 is somewhere around 460lbs which is about 60-70lbs more than what that car had in it. That doesn't take into account any fabrication to get it back there along with trans and bell housing. The car would have to have more of a balance issue than what the car had before. Maybe he can lose enough weight in other areas back there to compensate for the motor. I was just saying you aren't going to swap a motor like this into a car like that and go have fun. It creates a lot more areas that need to be addressed if you want to actually turn in the car.

Awesome car. Love it.

I bet it would cost a lot more than that... I miss my Porsche sometimes, but I surely do not miss that Porsche Tax. In hindsight, the prices for many things in the Porsche world is just stupid.

Imagine this race ready with rwb exterior treatment.

That would be most excellent. :)

just ran across this site and forum and joined due to the lsx info available. the black 930 is my car. it is stripped of all frills as well as most sound proofing. it has lightweight interior, lexan, etc. t the ducktail is much lighter than the original tail. the rear windown is lexan as well as the quarters and side glass. rear seat have been removed and all insulation. the ls7 engine is considerably lighter than the original turbo motor. also the cooling system is located in the front of the car which helps with the rear bias these cars are built with. the only accessory on the front of the engine is the alternator. i have a remote 55 gpm mezziere electric water pump for cooling. i have not had the car corner balanced but that will happen soon.

It looks fantastic. This is the same setup I plan to run in my car. As far as I know, only one other person has bolted an LS engine to the 930 transaxle in a Corvair, but the principle is the same. People don't realize this works, and you end up with a better balanced car than you started with. In my case my bias would drastically improve and the weight would actually come down almost 100 lbs.

One of Best of Show's customers decided to build one of the craziest little flat sixes out there. 30k didn't even cover half of it... I never thought pro-touring cars could be considered "cheap" until then.

Welcome aboard.
The sound of your Porsche is second to none.
I'm guessing by your screen name that you are also a Mopar enthusiast.

Sometimes I read Porsche forums for fun and vicarious thrills. Do you guys realize they are making up to 1200 whp and more from the modern 996 and 997 turbo motors ? A routine upgrade for 997 will get you 700 hp (600 whp) and more. Yes, its all boost, but that can be fun too. In an AWD package that would be pretty awesome. The 700+ package is mostly done with ECU, turbos and other externals. THe big 900+ packages are full motor builds and while I've never seen a direct price tag, you are looking at around $80k to have it done turnkey. But the 600-700 packages are around $25-30k + $5k labor. Of course, if you ever blow up that 25 psi motor you are in a world of hurt.

Point is, these cars have some amazing abilities and amazing pricetags. An V8 conversion is probably the cheaper way to go, but of course you lose all "Porsche-ness" too. But that might be a good thing !
