Looking for some thoughts on the wheel color. Please disregard my 1st attempt at photoshop. My 2 year old grand daughter was not here to help me. I am working on minitubing the car this winter and will need some new wheels. The car currently has polished American 200s wheels. The dark wheels are growing on me. With the black roof, stripes and sidepipes, is it too much? Thanks for any thoughts. Pictured are Forgeline wheels. Thanks for any comments. Reactor

Goes nicely with the sidepipes I think!

Maybe go satin on the spokes?

if you photoshop some cinder blocks under the car, it would look like someone stole your wheels.

with all black wheels, it's hard to tell where the tire ends and the wheel starts. add polished hoops and they look much better.

Yep, too much black. The wheels are hidden in the background with no definition. Like above, definitely add polished or brushed hoops.

deleting the chrome strip on the rocker pannel and the chrome wheel well moldings will make the all black wheels look good. otherwise having some polish on the wheels will tie them into the car better as is now.

Well you know which one's i would vote for...

Satin black with polished Hoops.

It would give you some more definition. Now it is all black on your rim..

I like the look, but also like the idea of ditching the rocker and wheel well trim. The right brakes behind the wheels will be important too. Not just for looks, but performance too. Just my opinion of course...

My thoughts exactly. Color match the stripe to the body of the car

I hear too many people say that black wheels are aggressive. actually entirely black wheels are, IMO, the total opposite. they are subtle. aggressive means that it jumps out and grabs your attention. but the all black loses definition, blurs together with the tire and fades into the wheelwell.

I would rather a nice set of wheels draw attention instead of looking like factory steelies with no hubcaps from 50'.

The All Black Wheel does look good.. Reactor.. Try photoshopping both versions. One with all black and one with Chrome..

Also Satan's Satin Black is great looking.

52893Thanks for the replys and thoughts. I think the all black with the chrome trim on the car, seems a little confused. I like the idea of deleting the trim on the fenders and the bottom chrome strip. I looked on forgeline web site and you can do a pin stripe. Just may go down that road. Thanks again. Reactor

All black with an orange pinstripe has my vote. But I am really partial to satin black Forgelines. I also agree removing all of the chrome moldings which I think it gives it a lower looking stance.

I would go with a set of Billet Specialties Splines with Black Center and Polished or Soft Brushed Lip. Brushed will go good with the Stainless Trim.

There is a lot more black and orange on that car then chrome. So, with that said, I think the wheels you photo-shopped on the car with a color matched orange wheel stripe and the SS hardware on the wheels it would be perfect. The SS hardware on the wheels would help a little with bringing everything together.

I completely agree. Matte black center, Gloss black outer. Gives some sort of definition between the center and the outer so that you can tell how deep the wheel is, and see a difference between the tire and the outer.

Ordered a set of Forgelines from Frank. (Matte Black) I need to finalize the exact size next week. Went by DSE on Friday and got the stuff for the Quadralink and went ahead and ordered a narrowed rear from DSE. I was going to just get the tubs, but could not keep myself from just taking care of it all while I was there. The guys at DSE run a 18x12 with a 5.5 bs with the BFG 335/30/18. I was looking at possibly going 19x12 in the rear with the 335/30/19 Nitto NT05. I just like the look of the NT05 and Nitto does not make the 335 in an 18". The specs for the Nitto tire are about 1/2 inch wider than the BFG. For the forum members with the DSE spec'd rear and 335's, is there room for another 1/2 inch of tire? (BFG 12.8" wide vs 13.3" wide) I was thinking of going 6" of back space and using a spacer to make an exact fit if I need to. At least that would give me some adjustment room if needed. I may go back up to DSE on Tuesday, and look over the 69 and see what the clearence really is. Thanks for the comments. By the way, I would not ever attempt such a project with out the info and pictures that you guys post. Keep them coming! Reactor

Ditch the black wheels. That vinyl top & stripes adds way too much black to also have black wheels.

Car is way to stock in appearance to use PT type of wheels. To me your car looks like you went stuck a set of big expensive wheels on a stock car. It just does not work!

Unfortunately "I" think you have the wrong wheels on your car. Big wheels are neat but not when they are the only real visible mod on a stock appearing car!

You may want to consider a strip on the inner part of wheel to break it up. That's what I did on my Daytona and it seemed to work out well....

Too much black???

No, not enough black.
Trying to go for the "murdered out" look with all black doesn't fly well with chrome trim & bumpers.

If you want the look, powder coat all your exterior trim and bumpers in matte black.
Then do a lip around the rim in color or chrome to offset it a little bit.

The Charger above works better because the body is all black.

When you said you might bring the Daytona out on a local Cruise, I wasn't expecting , wow, the real deal........Why ? I don't know..But SWEET...

I love the black wheels...I did take the Vinyl top off my car, but I stayed Black.. For the Camaro, if you keep the Vinyl top, I would watch how black the wheel is, breaking it up with a stripe may be the ticket, but what do i know...

Well, after much thought and soul searching, I defaulted to my comfortable position of polished and brushed wheels. Car is getting close to back on the road. Just wanted to say thanks to Wes at DSE, Frank at Prodigy, Mark at Forgeline and Rick at Baer Brakes. Everyone was a big help and I appreciated it. Mini-tubs were completed by Skin and Bones in Denver,NC. Great bunch of folks. My son and I completed the Quadralink installation and the bolt on's. I could not have got this far without his help. Wheels are ZX3R's with the HTM finish with polished outers. 19x12 with 5.75 bs and 18x8 with 4.9 bs. Nitto NT05 tires. 335/30/19 and 245/40/18. I will add some more pics when finished. Thanks to all the folks on the forum and the info you provide.

Great choice. I am a big fan of all black wheels or black centers with polished lip. So I did like your photoshop. But the wheels you chose suit your car perfectly. With the chrome on the car a polished wheel looks right.

Do you have any under car pics of the side pipes? I want to go with side pipes but can't find a good solution to route the exhaust?

I do not have any good undercar shots that show the headers. They are Hooker Sidemounts that are now discontinued. Here is a picture that shows some from the wheelwell. I will try to get some shots next time I have it on the lift. 58586

Can you post more pics of the car with the wheels? The car looks great. I wanted to see the front wheels too, what offset and width on the front did you go with?

Reactor
04-27-2012, 09:52 AM
Here's a pic that shows the front. The wheels in the front are 18x8 with a 4.9" backspace. It has the factory spindles on the car. Frank @ Prodigy hit it perfectly for the front. It has some lip to it and the center of the wheel does not stick out from the outside edge of the wheel. 245/40/18 on the front. If not for the pipes, I could lower the front a little more, but I am at the limit and mercy of the speed bumps around. Thanks for all the positive comments. 58732

I don't have any video on the car. The pipes sound just like the Corvette side mounts that Hooker still makes. I bought these in 2006. You could only get them in chrome and small block only. They were discontinued soon after. I sent them to JetHot and they coated them. I then found a car and built it around the pipes. When and if I ever go LS, I guess they will have to go, but they do sound good with the solid roller cam. Reactor

Maybe it's an age thing, or generation gap, not entirely sure... but I've had many discussions with my cousin about how there is a lack of a color uniformed wheels out there. BOZE, Forgeline, etc... higher end companies offer you whatever, however. But for pre-built custom wheels I've always struggled finding something I like, in a uniform color. I prefer an ALL black wheel. No ring, no rivets, no mismatched center cap. ALL black. I think it is the most aggressive look not only for vintage cars, but new cars alike. Wheels are like women and music... if everybody had the same taste, it would all get boring real quick. ;)

For whatever it's worth, I've always found that a black centered wheel with a chrome ring has too much contrast. Makes the wheel look smaller. 19's look like 18's, 18's like 17's, etc. Just my thoughts!
