Just Another Monte Carlo SS

I know some of you guys know me from the MonteCarloSS.com forum. I have been a long time reader here and finally joined up. So, I thought I would share my old car. Its nothing special, but it is special to my heart. My late Pa-paw bought this 1986 SS in the late '80s with less than 5,000 miles on the dial. He was the second owner. I never understood why he originally bought this car because he was always a truck guy. But, years later as a graduation present, he gave the car to me. My dad believed that his intention was giving the car to me if I did good in school. So now, its been almost 12yrs since that special day and the car now still just has a little under 27,000 miles on it. I put close to 1,000 miles on it this year which is more than I have put on it in the last 6yrs all together. The car was all original until this past summer. I just didn't drive the car much because of its factory stance. So, I decided to do some subtle changes. Special thanks to one of the greatest men to walk this world, My Pa-paw! I will love and miss him forever.

Thanks for the welcome, guys. Some beautiful cars here. I have built quite a few different street cars and trucks, mostly all late model stuff. I have honestly enjoyed this car more this year than anything else that I ever had. Sad thing is, I could have saved a lot of time and money if I could have just talked myself into changing it years ago. I get way more comments on it now since I lowered it and put the wheels on.

Cool story. Your Monte is a nice looking car. I bought an '83 as my daughters 1st car and we still talk about it. I think it would be cool to pick up a non-runner and build it as a "look-a-like" to the "Pa-paw" car. Only do the things to it that you can't do to the other. Would be an interesting build.

I think it would be cool to pick up a non-runner and build it as a "look-a-like" to the "Pa-paw" car. Only do the things to it that you can't do to the other. Would be an interesting build.

Actually Mark, I did pick up an '88 SS a few years ago just for that reason. I built it with more of a street/strip setup though. I ended up selling it before I completely finished it. I just got tired of it. The hardest part I was having with it was trying to get it to look as good as the "Pa-paw" car.

The stance is great. I have always liked the Monte SS. Just hated that GM did not put a more powerful powerplant in them. That is a really clean car. I had a good friend who waited almost twenty years to buy an original 87 with only 15k original miles. I could not believe his car when I first saw it. He could not bring himself to drive it, and sadly he recently died. Enjoy it, it is what they are all about. Welcome aboard.

Thanks, bud. I agree 100%....... GM should have at least put the 350 TPI engine in them. I also didn't want to drive this one for years. But, things have changed. Its not like Im ever going to sell it anyway. I might as well fix it to where it appeals to me more. I finally got tired of replacing parts from it not being drove. Its actually harder on it sitting than if I just drove it. I am enjoying it so much that I sold all my other hot rods. I had the right car for myself the whole time. Thanks again.

Really, really nice car and a great back story. I agree with you in keeping it close to original and not overdoing it. With so few miles on it you'll be able drive it anywhere and not worry about reliability. The stance is perfect.

I've always liked these cars. I still remember my Uncle and I running around working on building my Aunt a clone even before the SS officially came off the assembly line. He had caught wind of the new model and had a wrecked 84 regular Monte.(Think that was the year) Anyway, he was able to put it together not long after the SS came out and surprise her. I almost bought it as my first car when I turned 14. I just decided it didn't have enought HP and ended up with a 1981 Monte with a 68 327.

Thanks, Dave. I agree, less is more with tailpipes. I normally completely hide the tailpipes or just use turndowns, but I wanted to keep this car quite. Also wanted it to be a little different. The stock tailpipes just stand out to much if you lower these cars or go away from the completely stock look in my opinion. Im like you............. I was looking for the "correct" angle too. The guy that does my exhaust work did a great job and somehow got the angles on both sides perfect.

we bought a 2000 camaro SS long ago.
had a grandbaby recently.

I called SLP and ordered a "birth certificate" with the SS # and her name on it...will be a neat high school graduation present!

I love the clean MCSS lines. helped a neighbor sell a really beat up one, while back. killed me not to buy it.
