So Ive contacted 2 LS engine builders both known names in the industry. I can not get either one to give me a quote on an engine package for my Nova. Im actually really surprised as to why I have not received a response.

My question is who else is out there that has a good rep and will provide a price breakdown. Website or contact info would be perfect. Thanks in advance.

Marc, I think a lot has to do with machining cost and parts needed for your build.
Most builders have a fee for Assembly that they charge for certain engines. I know my builder has a price for a race motor and a street set up.
Cost goes up with race motors because of special tolerances and clearances, degreeing,etc...

I also have 66 with all the detroit speed goodies being built and like you Im looking for an engine builder. Being my first build I need some one to help me put together a package that will be tame enought so daily driving will be enjoyable but at the same will be very capable at autocross/roadrace events. I'm interested in the RHS block natualy asperated, 427 or 451. Who can help me understand what the benefits and trade off the 427 and 451. What hp and torque numbers I should be looking for? Ive been told I should be looking for a engine with a flat dyno graph vs looking for one with just high hp. Someone please help.

The car will be used for street use as well as autocross events. Its not going to be driven daily but I do plan on 1 or 2 times a week all depending on schedules of course. But I would love to be able to be competive (driving skills aside) in autocross events.

Dyno graphs I can not help you with, thats way over my head and is the reason I too am looking for a builder. I have talked to DSE quite a bit about hp and performance and Kyle did state awhile back that he felt the optimum hp was around 650. He has more in his camaro, but he is an excellent driver. Ive seen Ryan from DSE kill it on the road course in Stacey's camaro when it had around 600 or a touch less hp as well. I think the hp is going to come down to driver, weight of car, intended use, and dollars.

I can tell you I simply just ask tons of questions and Ill let the engine builder do his thing. Im currently talking with a guy out here somewhat local and it seems as if it might work out and he definately knows his stuff.

im going with erik at hke if i can ever get ahold of him again. he broke his ankle pretty good and was out of the shop for a while. it sounds like if you have the money the build will be pretty fast. the last time i spoke with him they has something like 70 incomplete projects. people start but dont have the money to finish. he gave me a complete itemized breakdown with part numbers. i couldnt find cheaper parts prices no matter how hard i tried or how shady the online dealer was. his fees arent cheap though, but i figure the parts prices even that out.

my plan now is to dry sleeve a block at RED in oceanside and ship it to erik. 454 ls out of any aluminum block. should be close to 700hp and cheaper than buying the mast 416.
