This project was conceived for the sole purpose of confusing and irritating the " if it didn't cost 70 grand its crap" people.:box2: My plans are as follows:

I am going to build a low buck pro-touring car for 1/4 the money and 100% more of the homegrown ingenuity. My evil plan begins with a GTO that was purchased for 100.00. How's that for low buck? It came stock with a 350 and a 4-spd, neither of which came with the car. I have a racebuilt supercharged 455 on hand to do the gruntwork. A 6-spd trans. will be handling the shifting and a 12 bolt will be bringing up the rear. I plan to drive this car as much as possible and beat the crap out of it everytime I get the chance.( road race, drag race, street race)
Calls have already been made for the pricey items on my evil little list, starting with a carbon fiber hood and decklid weighing a wopping 15lbs and 7lbs respectively. A t-56 that was acquired for 790.00 shipped to my door with a full warranty. How's that for cheap? I just want to prove that these things can be had for thousands less than you see them with a lot of time and a little saavy. I will keep ya'll posted and hopefully supplied with build pics as it permits. :rtfm:

what year goat? hope the huffer doesnt mean ya gotta cut a hole in the c/f hood.

it's a 72 GTO, and if I have done my figuring correctly I shouldn't have to cut the hood. (I hope):hmm: anyway that is gonna be one of the most expensive parts of the project. C/F isn't cheap these days, especially when it's a custom application......

Sounds like a cool project, rod. Where'd you get the T-56 from? Is it a rebuilt stock unit, or an upgraded trans?

Good for you. Glad to see it. More power to you!

Now get out there and start working. Time is money.:seizure:

it's a stock rebuilt unit with a 12 mo. warranty. Took a little diggin but they can be found reasonably priced.

Hey Roger.......I know I know.....time to make the donuts.

I wanna see this hood and decklid. Are you laying it yourself or you "one off " -ing it through someone you are contracting to do the work?

The hood is being sourced out, I don't know how to lay fiberglass much less C/F. They can be had, but they are not cheap. I'll PM you the specs and where to get it if your interested....

I guess I don't get the "low buck" terminology when you are spending big bucks on C/F stuff you really don't need. I know weight savings is important but a much cheaper race style 'glass hood is not much heavier then a spendy C/F piece... Using the stock hood and deck lid would be free... Just my take.
Don't get me wrong though... I am all for "cheap and homegrown" which is why I am questioning your decision. If you were making the parts yourself I wouldn't say anything because the C/F material is about the same price as 'glass. Laying it up is the same process as 'glass. It's just nasty stuff to work with.

This sounds like my kind of build since I am a tight wad and penny pincher too. Good luck with the car and keep us posted. Any pics of your ride? Cool name too.

Sounds cool. Low buck is the only way I'll be going. Right now it's more like "no buck"!

astroracer,

I agree the hood and the decklid are overboard for a " low-buck", but the cool factor is just undeniable (quoting my wife). I deemed it a necessary evil, besides no one knows what I paid for them. Granted they are not very cost effective, but a reduction in weight had to start somewhere. I really feel like they add a little extra something to the appearance and performance (weight reduction).

On the bright side the car will still hopefully come in under 5000.00 total build.

Made a new find the other day for the car......200.00 rear disc. brake setup, new parts, very light weight and very cool. Pm for details.....

Yea, the cool factor does have it's draws doesn't it. I can fully appreciate that. I had to ask though.
I am of the same mind set as you as far building a car goes. What I can't do or build myself I have to come to grips with laying out the green. That doesn't mean I cut corners though. I will spend the money for quality parts and I won't go cheap on suspension components or fasteners but, if I can make it myself, I'll do that which saves the money for the things I can't...

Is that a one time deal you got, or is this something plausible for everyone. What about front discs what you have up there...cheap??

Interested.

the rear setup can be purchased everyday at that price. I have not decided on the front as of yet. Gonna run dual master cylinders though, so it won't really matter what I do up front. It will be easy to plumb. I bought a kit here locally for remote resevior wilwoods for 100.00 . There is also a company locally that can redo my factory coil springs for cheap.

Where did you come up with a blown 455 so cheap? The whole car under 5k? I would think the engine itself would cost more than that??? AWSOME!!

rodknocker

well long story short, I bought the blower from a guy on this site for 500.00. I traded some motorcycle repair work for the 455 ( which happened to be an SD with a steel crank) so all that was left was to buy the inner parts that I wanted.............If anyone else in interested in anything I have posted on here I will be glad to give them info. on where and how to get the best deal on anything you want. I guarantee I can find it cheaper than most if not all. I once thought about doing a website on parts and stuff I find all the time for cheap and the best places to look for certain things, but I never got around to it..........thanks for all the posts it's good to see some regular folks and cheapskates like me interested in building nice hotrods for not alot of money. PM me if I can help in any way with finding parts for your project.

Got a full leather interior seats, front and rear, console and with all the bells and whistles. Got them from a 95 firebird t-am. The leather was kinda dirty, but with a little elbow grease from my wife and I, they look good as new. The Bird even had a 6 spd in it originally, so I got the factory shift pattern on the console. The best part of it all, I got it for 200.00. Chock up another steal for the Scape Goat.

OK. I'll bite. I've got $50 bucks on the fact that it can't be done for $5K (No hostility: just because it's a fun experiment)
If you're game post all plans for the car here. It has to be a DONE, fully functional pro-touring car. Will the car be painted? Full of Rust holes? Improvements must be made in every category since you intend to road race, drag race, and street race. If it goes in the car, it has to be counted. So stock suspension, retreads, etc. will fail the bet since they will hinder your performance goals.
Scan and post all receipts including any and all outside labor. Receipts must list prices and sources for everything including existing blower, brakes, etc. We'll count your own labor as free. If you don't have receipts fuggetaboutit. Let's not even get started. And post pix.
If it comes to $5000.01 be prepared to make that $5050.01 :look:
If I win, I'll donate the $50 to P-T.com. This will be informative and fun.

i would take that bet, but I already have lots of parts for the car and not too many receipts. ( evidence, if my wife finds them)! Also because of the cheap skate nature, most of the stuff I buy will be used. what I will do though is give a complete rundown of what I have so far and what it has cost me and keep an accurate account of what is spent on the car to the .01 and if you are right I will pony up the cash. I fully agree with you doing it for 5k will be difficult, but I really think It can be done if a little patience and elbow grease are used. Here's what I've spent to far

1972 GTO -100.00
t-56 trans (shipped) 790.00
455 engine complete -Freebie
rear disc. brake setup (new, bought locally) 186.67
Leather pontiac T/A interior w/console-200.00
Paxton Sn 89 supercharger (complete) -500.00
I gotta go dig up the other stuff I purchased, and that will be posted as well.

That's almost $1800--which is an awesome deal. But it kinda makes it hard to proceed on the wager with that much dough is unaccounted for.
Anyway, Keep us posted on the progress.

Well, this is an OLD one!

Any updates???

I'm also building a 1972 GTO on the cheap (as possible).

I got a FULLY built pontiac 400 (forged pistons, h-beams, ported heads, roller rockers, etc...) and a Richmond 4+1 trans for $2000!

But, like you said, it takes time.
