Well we're at it again LOL,,,, Carbon Kustoms has commissioned Scott to do another Bird "Project Sleeping Beauty".... I wanted to challenge Scott to build an attractive yet understated 70 TA Pro-touring build that the average guy could afford.... The car will utilize a stock sub-frame with readily available Ride Tech suspension components and Wilwood brakes.... We will attempt to make some of the hard choices and balance where money is spent and cut as closely as possible to build a very good road map for others that may be considering doing a early second gen....

Of course there will be a certain basis when it comes to Carbon panels,,, but hey that's what you get when I'm financing the build and it's my rules right,,, that is unless someone else wants to step up and purchase the build as we go along LOL...

Man, another killer build!
I'm pretty sure that one of the future upgrades for my car, after its on the road and sorted some, will be Ridetech's upper and lower tubular arms, tall spindles and single adjustable front coil overs. And I'm thinking I might couple it with Wilwood's Superlite 6R front brakes.....although that will mean the option of running 15" wheels when it suits me will be taken off the table.

Hi David, we're playing with a few ideas currently,,,, one is to place a 400 stroked to 461 in the car and the other is to place an LS based motor (like a LS1 or LQ9) with a six speed... The whole idea here will be to make it reliable and strong without breaking the bank.... Scott and I will discuss this and optimize the the bang for the buck as we want to build a "real working guys" car in this build.....

We are going to be using the stock frt. sub frame.Which that right there will save thousand's(Ride Tech control arms).We are not mini tubing the car.Albert is chosing some nice afordable 17" wheel and tire choice.(13in.wilwood brakes).The LS1 & 6 speed are pcs.My son Kevin had laying around so that's not big bucks.If Albert uses his puncho motor he has and a 5speed which will be lower cost that a T56 magnum.I am pretty good at saving a buck.The only over the top componet's are the carbon fiber pcs.But Albert get's those at Whole Sale.I have had to hold Albert back alittle bit.My painter Brian Kellison Does Awesome paint and body work at very reasonable prices.You can't get better paint for the money unless you do it yourself.Albert also has a ton of of OEM part's that we be using.I will be sending Albert photos as soon as brian gets atarted on the body.

Engine/g'box/diff combo.....stroked Pontiac 400 block, some alloy heads (SD Performance), a Ruggles Q-jet, R.A.R.E. resto RamAir manifolds - stick either a TH700 behind it with an adapter kit, or (an easier fit, but more expensive build) a TH2004R....trick out a 10 bolt rear with some strong parts for the known weak points, and theres your budget running gear.
A ton of torque, some good HP figures and won't cost the earth and minimises fabrication time for non-stock parts.
Just some thoughts....

I'm sure I could learn some things from this; although it's too late for me to save much more cash. I know a ton of mistakes that I've made with respect to wasting money and spending it on items that weren't necessary. Also, there are things I cheaped out on that I shouldn't have. I rushed things a bit instead of spending more time researching.

Instead of spending a pile of money on wheels (regardless of how nice they are), I should have spent less and put the difference towards other things like better shocks, better fuel tank, better brakes, better steering, etc. I also forked out a ton of jack for a Moser 9" when I could have rebuilt my solid 10-bolt for a fraction, which would have been perfectly fine for the lower HP I'll be running and the way I'll be using the car.

Looking forward to this; it should prove helpful to a bunch of folks looking to better spend their hard earned money; especially for those who are doing the right thing and RESEARCHING first!!

You are a man after my own heart with the 2nd gen Pontiacs. Got a few myself :-) Can't wait to get some of your parts on the one Chad is building. I with leigh on the motor. You can get a pretty stout Pontiac motor using aluminum heads, though I would go EFI instead of the carb. It would make fitting the shaker more difficult but someone needs to make that piece anyway.

If you do go with the LS, look into mass producing a CF plenum to fit the shaker to the LS. That thing would sell!

This project is exactly what I have been planning for my 74 Formula 400. I really can't wait to see how well it goes and how pocket friendly it is. But I would rather prefer PTFB suspension parts instead of Ridetech. I know that Ridetech is the best but as far as I have compared PTFB seems to be half the price.

Mert Dave over at PTFB does a "very good job" of offering there spring option and I agree it is less costly,,,, that said I have tracked,,, auto crossed,,, and street driven the combo on "Sleeping Beauty" and it's my preference...

BTW the Ride Tech combo is not the ultimate choice (there are a lot that would argue a 3 link or a torsion bar application is better in some cases) it's just what I personal feel is the best balanced combo for the buck... Needs and setups change from auto cross to road course to street,,,,, it's about balance and what works for you personally....

The car is in the paint shop and I hope to have some of the initial pic's of the shell and the work being performed on it soon,,, I will post those pic's soon....

It's been a while and we're finally focused on the car again (Dam Life and road trips just keep getting in the way LOL)....

I spoke with Brian and it appears that the doors on the car are off a Camaro,,, yes I did just say Camaro.... Now this is very interesting as I have done full doors for a Firebird and was wondering about the inner structure between Camaro and Firebird being the same??? The answer is yes they appear to be the same gang,,,, early second gen Camaro and Firebird doors are interchangeable as witnessed below....

This knowledge now in hand and given my access to Carbon,,,, well lets just say we're making a little change to the build plan and placing Carbon skins on the doors ;-)....

Agreed Leigh,,, guess one of the past owners didn't know where to find doors for the car and went off half a$$ed in trying to fix the car...
The good thing is it has been brought down to a shell and we'll make a real Pro-touring car out of it that is done to the nines....

Thought this one was going t9o be the 'every man's' car? love how plans change don't you? Camaro door skins have a indentation on the bottom 3 or 4" of the door. Not sure when they started doing that, but I do know 77 & up have it thus not 'correct' for the bird - maro door swap, but interchangeable nonetheless.

The inner shell door appears to be a shared component on the F-body for 70 is what I was trying to convey Takid (we're still reviewing this)... the roof, trunk and Dutchman"s panel are all interchangeable for example as well... This is simply something we discovered while stripping and prepping the car for the build.... I didn't do it,,, I'm just sorting through an existing car...

Also I stated right form the start of the thread that the Carbon is my biz and I will use it as I please in the build.... I also stated that if you take the carbon and omit it from the build that the car would represent the best overall value/options to consider for the average guy to build an early TA Pro-touring build ""in my opinion"""....

I do not see where that has changed and it reflects my opinion of an option for a build plan that I think has balance.... others may feel differently... I'm sure you could lay out a build plan that suits you and you'd feel comfortable with too,,, maybe your appreciation for values are different from mine,,, and that's all good because this is what the hobby is all about... It's definitely not the cheapest,,,, but it sure is far from the most expensive option/s available for our cars and I feel it represents a strong balance between price and performance (in a broad range of uses with the car) ....

I'll be interested to see the process in skinning the shells of th edoors with CF Skins. I seem to recall that the early doors don't have the full side impact beam in them....are you thinking of adding that while the skin is off, or counting on a cage side bar for that protection?

Leigh it'll be interesting to see what we have when the door skins are removed buddy..... We would look to place a beam in the door if it didn't have one as safety is always a concern and I'll ask Brian to take some pic's as he does the skin replacements for the thread.... As a side note, I have some reinforced skins that we have playing with that would give me the confidence to run without a beam myself,,,, but as this car is being sold to the public we'll look to make sure a secondary impact device is also incorporated....

just being smart before regarding the 'every man's ' car.

I will 2nd that the inner structures of the F bodies are the same and the outer body parts( fenders / hood/ fascias) changed to give model distinction. How would you attach the carbon skins to the metal shells or are you making an entire door of carbon? I would assume an epoxy to bond the skin to the shell of the dissimilar materials?

There are specific bonding agents designed for bonding Carbon and we utilize these in this application... In Canada the band name is Plexus if memory serves me well here at the computer..... We do btw the way have the molds completed for a complete door,,, but we have "not" got an engineers stamp on them yet so we have not released to the public....

Composite door beams...save some serious weight there. I've seen some incredibly strong sections made up of aircel or klegecell foam core with triaxial woven material...all vacuum bagged out for minimum weight.
They'd be strong, but I'm not sure how they'd fair with yeilding/deforming like steel would....my guess is they'd reach their ultimate load rating and just fail. I wonder could you combine composite laminate with a lighter metal beam to give strength with some ability to deform and not simply fail under load?
Guess thats a question for the composite engineers.

Albert, Second Gen doors are NOT interchangeable between Camaros and Birds. As TAKID posted the bottom of the Camaro door has a much different profile than the Bird. This different profile is in the door frame as well. You might be able to make it work with some skill and a hammer an dolly. All second gen Camaros have the same door profile as do All Birds, just not the same. The only body parts that cross over are the roof, trunk lid and the filler panel between the trunk and rear glass. All second gen glass is interchangeable with the rear window being 70-74 and 75-81.

Looks like this will be another GREAT BUILD , I will be following it for sure. Maybe I'm looking for some Motivation.....

tazzz i believe the front leading edge of the firebird has a more curved shap than the camaro .the camaros are peaked in the center and also the have a lower body line .could be wrong but i dont think iam

Guys, you're all on track with traditional parts and steel construction methods for the doors..... This said by going with the firebird door first and keeping the inner and outer structures separate in the molding process we may have open the door to an efficiency by way of mold manipulation... We are checking this out and that is why I stated """we're still reviewing this""" because molds can be built in parts and the step in question on the outer skin is a no brainier,,, the inner may represent more of a challenge but is being reviewed/considered...

So that I am very clear,,,, as is the steel inner and outer would be a bitch to exchange.... That said with minor mods/pieces placed within the molds/molding process,,,, the inner and outer can be modified to accomplish desired results by the look of things.... Also the comment on on shared parts maybe something to reflect on to include the Firewall, Floors, and possibly trunk floor are possibilities as well I believe (currently under review too)

Finally home and thought I'd share an update with everyone on the build..... As is the case in many of our lives things have been pulling me in a lot of directions, a positive one of which was Kansas a couple of weeks ago and I happy to report Brian Kellison is coming along very nicely with the paint and body.... He has applied the Carbon Composite door skins to the build and has taken the car to the point of final primer and blocking (this pic was taken during the visit).... I'm told he has come a long way and intends to shoot color on the car over the next week or so... In the mean time I have asked him to send me more photos to share with you all as my iPhone camera is doing some funking things (temporarily loosing some photos and in B&W as an example here)

Scott tells me that he will also be sending me some photos of the stock sub-frame and it's assembly over the next few days.... The sub-frame has been smoothed, painted and the A-arms have been stripped and re-painted to match... The sub-frame, Firewall, and Rad support are all in a semi-flat fine metallic gray tone found in a typical carbon fiber weave for engine bay detail... The engine has been treated to a fresh stock rebuild and the block will be painted in 1970 Pontiac Blue and all of this will be floated between Carbon Fiber inner fenders, a Clear Carbon underside on the hood,,, and Clear Carbon Cowl to frame the backstop of the engine bay (again Carbon is my business so indulge me here, discount it off the budget build mindset please)...

We are working with a tooling company to stamp out the back attachment point of the fenders... tooling for these steel anchor points on the Carbon Fenders has been a nightmare and has held off the production to this point,,, hopefully that will change soon....

A quick shot of the LS1 professionally re-built to insure a smile when leaning on the beauty... We sprayed the block in 70 Pontiac blue and will likely use remote coil packs to provide that old school look out of a retro drive line...
Scott tells me that the car will come back to his shop tomorrow so we'll have more photos coming over the next few days I'm sure....

I'm impressed by the cowl top....I'm assuming its bonded with auto body adhesive?
Will it deliver the same sort of rigidity to the box section of the cowl as steel?

Thanks Leigh,,, there is a very specific Plexus compound that bonds the Carbon panel to the steel of the cowl area and yes it is in fact much stronger than the steel it replaces....

Just a quick update,,, I'm back from RTTH's 7 and LS Fest and dropped by Scott's prior to the event to pickup the Formula when I took these pic's...
Scott has been working on the 53 Caddy, the 70 Sleeping Beauty, and now his 66 Chevelle... Top this all off with helping his son Brandon with the 71 Jevlan and a couple of projects I'm steering his way and he's going to be a very busy guy over the coming months....

The car is coming along very nicely and we hope to finish it off over the next few weeks all things equal....

Any pictures of the carbon fiber door skin replacement process? Did you ever get a weight on the door?

Ryeguy the door skin install process has not been filmed yet but we hope to do that sooner than later and door skins are approx 10lbs with a reinforcement panel in it.... This is an additional precaution and not ment to replace the factory side impact device.....

Are those 17" year one wheels or another of your own concoction? Like those 5 spokes you had on the white monster. Which looked great on the cover of some recent rag, super chevy maybe?

Will this sound as evil as the car you had in vegas last year, or is this one slghly more sedate?

LOL Scott,,, they are the Year one wheels and yes this one is a lot more sedate... The car has actually created quite a stir in the community and I don't think it'll be around for long given the interest level in it..... Now this years SEMA car that's another story buddy,,, it sounds like the house is coming down LOL....

Love the builds you do Albert. I've been dancing idea's of a bird build after my Duster build since I've met you at the border last year. I'd love to see some carbon parts but alas I don't have a bowtie (yet).

No he is talking about a 70 base model bird that I also own,,, sleeping beauty is still for sale.
Anvil Auto did some Chevelle Carbon parts you should touch base with them to see if they have what you want bud,,, as far as one off sure,, but it's expensive to do things like that...

A quick guesstimate off the cuff to do one off Chevelle parts,,, you could easily spend $15,000 to $20,000 dollars without too much effort at all.... Then you would need to budget a cage in the car and it's costs.... I wouldn't build one off doors for anyone that didn't have a Molly cage without substantial side impact bars along with a legal release....

Not that it matters. The car is slick but the Camaro and Firebird doors are the same inner structure but the skins are not the same. Firebirds have a rounded body lines running down them and a Camaro has a sharper edge. Some one added the doors off a Camaro but they also sharpened the rest of the body lines on the 1/4's and fenders to get them to work. You may already know this so just tossing it out there. Very nice work on the car. It looks sweet!

Just a quick update,,, Scott has been "very busy" with the 53 Caddy, his 66 Chevelle, and the sub-frame projects along with working on Sleeping beauty....so here is a nice Christmas update and I thought I'd share it with the board...

The suspension, brakes, and exhausts have been completed as well as having front and rear windshield installed... Ken will be over to deal with wiring shortly and and well look to button this build up... All things equal I hope to visit Scott at the top of the new year to lend a helping hand for a week or so and we'll finish placing the interior and do final panel alignments and take this little beauty for our first test drive....
