I loaned him my wagon's old 16x8" GTA wheels to try on and we snapped a couple shots. Even at stock height and despite it's a boat, they sure lend themselves to the PT look. Can't wait to see where your project goes...

I'm glad to see you posting, Achille! Thanks for the kind words. Grocery Getter was a handfull at WOT...Lonestar will have at least 45hp on it, and should be slightly lighter.
That is great to hear, because once I installed the hotchkiss rear suspension back in the day. All tire roasting shenanigans stopped. It will be nice to have some of that back!!

Ben I don't know if you got my message and any other input on color would be nice. I was sure before that I was going with a candy blue with a white or grey stripe similar to scott martindales concept here. http://www.442.com/vcs/1964_1972/martindale.html at the bottom of the page. But I bought a Lemans blue BMW 335d about a year or so ago which changed my mind on the cutlass being blue. My wife which used to drive a red 96 firebird WS6 which we still have, compares the color with her current red Mercedes. I do not want that comparison with my two cars so reds and blues are out. My mom says paint it black. I am leaning towards BMW Alpine white which I love, or their Valencia orange which I have not seen in real life. The orange photographs well in some pictures but dull in others. This is just an FYI incase you guys are not aware of this site. http://ultra-hi-comp.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=65442s&action=display&thread=670&page=4 The link I posted is of a real 65 with the factory stripe. This site is all about the 1965 442. You can probably sale some of the trim pieces you are deleting to recoupe some of your cost. The guys are Gurus on the subject of all things 65 442. Just don't mention your putting a LS engine in it and you will get along fine. They are purist and can't stand the thought of a cheby motor in their all mighty rocket cars. Achille- got the message and pm sent. The beauty of doing digital computer based renderings is that I can change paint colors, wheels, stance, etc on the fly, so you get to see several options and then choose what you like the best having seen it first. Revisions are included in my fees so I'm happy to show you some different options.

That would have been me asking Joe all the questions. This project thread was the reason I even learned about the new GM crate engine. But that is the best part about these forums. All the great info and not to mention all the people willing to help others out. I am pretty much on the same path powertrain wise and I know there are others out there too. So the pictures are always helpful. Joe, I think one of your photos was a double post. You were probably trying to show a picture of those rivets to drill. Since you showed the oil pan swap I was wondering if you had to reapply any of the GM gray sealant on the four corners. Is it something that can be picked up at the local store if needed (part number)? And were you also able to just reuse the original oil pan gasket? Thanks again for the help. I know your customer is going to be pleased with this new setup.

Joe I'm on 442.com, ROP and Classic Olds I can place an ad for you for the qtr. if you would like. Anyway I'm taking notes on your build for my 64 build and have gone through a whole lot of what you have been doing, difference is I'm just a home grown gearhead you guys are the pros. I did send the body out for a complete resto and paint. I did cut in new floor pans, trunk pans, rear deck and all the floor and trunk braces and even had to replace the panel between the tail lights! But just cut out the old fitted and spot welded all the pieces in place so they could weld it all together while on the rotisserie. I am not that good at welding on my back. ( every man has to know his limitations punk-Clint Eastwood) Anyway though you would like to see a pics of my suspension-totally Hotchkis with a Moser 9 inch- Chassis is just about ready

I have 8 years to go before I have options to retire or not from the medical field-cardiovascular-respiratory-I would just LOVE to work in a shop like yours just for fun and share my experiences with these builds. Plus I'm building the 64 pro-touring to see you guys on cruises. My wife calls it our RV of the future. The motor in the previous pictures is a stock 67 442-400E, plans are for a tree stump puller Olds 425. ( except for a converter change the 200R4 is already built to handle future loads!!) We're in the process of figuring out what we're going to need to do to with the rear frame and wheel tubs, since we want to run a much larger wheel and tire combo than the factory allowed for, and planning the rear panel/tail light mods. We'll also be throwing an 8.8 in the jig, to set up our first 8.8 for the 64-67 A-body.

Frame kits and 2" wider tubs instock at ABC Performance (http://www.abcperformance.net/mini%20tub%20kit.html). Definately a time saver.

Project Lonestar is in desperate need of a rear 1/4. We've gone over several different plans of attack to repair what we have but it's just too far gone and needs to be replaced.

There isn't any aftermarket replacement support that we can find so we're hunting for something used. It's a 65 Cutlass, right (passenger) side 1/4 panel that we need. Best I can tell from my research is 64/65 are the same back there. If you know of a parts car willing to give one up PLEASE let us know. We are in the Atlanta GA region.

Call Joe at the Parts Place in Elburn IL, if it's out there he will know, but be prepaired to pay for it if he has it. We need a pair of GM 67 GTO fender and he had them but $4k later wow but they where NOS!!! And yes our customer did buy them :)

I told Joe before to check Desert Valley, they have some 64 and 65 hard tops there. The unfortunate thing about this car is you pretty much have to pay what the seller is asking because there aren't a lot of them out there.

Not really...it wasn't very straight, and it was visibly still heavily dented from the inside of the trunk. I wasn't a bit surprised to find this once we started grinding. Note that ALL of the white stuff on the ground around the car in this pic is from the filler used in the quarter panel.

The blaster hasn't returned my call; we'd like to get the blasting of all the inner panels, floor, and jambs done this week, so we can get the chassis out and modified, and send it to the powdercoater. My normal blaster is running about a 3 week turnaround, and we want to have this car in paint and going back together by Chistmas, so we're looking for faster alternatives.

We specifically discuss $10,000 for paint and budgeted for the new parts also. I already gave you 2 deadlines on how much money has been spent and they came and left. If anyone else has any suggestions on how to turn an abused '65 Cutlass into a Pro-Touring car for a total budget of $40,000, considering that $20k+ was spent on engine, trans, swap parts, and brakes, please, let me know. I'm all ears.

I, for one, say it can't be done. As an example, I will have easily more that $40K in my car when done and I'm doing all the work myself except for the metal and body work. I work for PPG so I'll likely paint it myself to get it done faster, but in the end I hope to keep it in the high 40K's with my labor free.

Well $40k was mentioned before the work was started and he assured me that he could do it.

Id count your blessings that he screwed up quoting you 40k and that he is doing his best to honor his quote. He either is very, very green in car building or completely misunderstood your quote. Either way if he is truly doing it at that 40k quote and the work is good, buy him beer and give him time.

I'm 2 years and 6 figures into mine and happy with the timeframe and money, but then again I know what building a truly high caliber car costs (in both time and money). I understand delays are frustrating but it goes hand and hand with this hobby.

I agree with Joe here that it takes some creativity to do what Atam requested on $40 K. However if that was the budget to work within sometimes plans can change to fit within the budget, Atam was re-using the suspension the car rolled in on, and going with less expensive brakes, wheels and tires, factory interior rather than custom, etc. can aid that. My chassis and drivetrain was mostly dialed in and the car driving for about $8-9K, a nice interior and paint could easily add $10-$15K to that and I could have a killer ride for under $25K doing the labor myself. But I can't really compare my car to Atams, it's apples and oranges comparing a shop build to a garage build.

I don't think getting caught up on the $ is the issue here, progress and communication is. It seems one of Atam's biggest beefs is why it's taking so long to get done what is, and why is it hard to get progress updates. Perhaps Atam should have been informed up front what he could get for the $40K he handed over near the beginning of the build rather than waiting 2 years (?) and now being told the car can't be what he thought it would.

Then there's the wait, if the $40K was given near the beginning why has it taken so long to build it?

How hard is it really to share a few pics on a regular basis? Every week, biweekly, at least once a month?

If my car was at anybody's shop several states away and I gave them $40K of my hard earned money I'd like to see progress, I think Atam's request is fair. Dodging it or making excuses for why a person can't get what they want makes that person on the other end look dishonest, no matter the situation.

I bet Joe if you took the time and responsibility to get Atam some photos to show him progress he's be somewhat appeased. Not putting forth the effort only makes you look bad. Blaming it on Chief makes you look bad. Does he have barbed wire around his shop? He can't meet there you one evening for 5 minutes to get photos? You can't take photos of the assembled frame and post them? It all makes you look bad, and seems to be making Atam feel like he's being taken for a ride. Prove him wrong by giving regular updates getting the car done to whatever degree his $40K is worth and back to him.

Leaving people you're responsible for in the dark makes you look like the bad guy. You know what I mean?

Thanks SRD. I am not an unreasonable person. I know that Joe needs to keep jobs in the shop to keep money coming. I have been very patient with Joe. But here I am being called a liar about the initial contract. I have even sat down with Joe at the shop to half the costs with him. i.e different rims, and no new Hotchkiss lower control arms, and several other things which was included in the contract. Still no progress. I got to wait 5 months on an update. Enough is enough.
