I am getting ready to replace my holey 5.3L and found a guy at work that has one he just rebuilt (trusted friend). He also has a C5 - Z06 cam. If I install this came, would I need to make any computer calibration changes or can it adapt on its own? I am trying to do this build on a strict budget (have a 2 year old), so I would prefer not to have to send out the controller to be flashed.

A tune is always a good idea. Also, this cam will need new valve springs. At the minimum you should run the GM "yellow" springs.

Agreed on both counts. Stock valve springs can float at 5500rpm.

Is it worth putting the cam in?

Save for when you can afford to do both.

To answer this question, we really need to know more info. The cam has to match the rest of the components on the car as well as the car's intended purpose and your driving style.

From what I have seen, a 2002+ LS6 cam on a stock 5.3 will bump the output between 30-40hp and 10-15ft/lbs of torque, and have a super smooth idle. It's a pretty good boost cam, and a decent bang for your buck NA cam (depending on your needs).

Get on ls1tech. Lots of cam info. If it were me, I would call Geoff at engine power systems or have pat g spec a custom cam based on all of your engine parameters, vehicle specs and your goals. They can spec a custom grind that's a lot better than a off the shelf for everybody grind. They both use comp cam lobes and it's only 25 bucks more. That's what I did w my carbd 5.3 in my camaro

Thanks for the info guys. As I said before, I am trying to keep it cheap, so I am guessing a custom cam would be out of my budget. My goals for this car is to be reliable and fun daily driver (on sunny days). I don't really need more power, but more is always better, so I figured if I could get the came for $75 it might be worth putting in. Sounds like it might be worth it. I need to find out how much I can get some springs for.
