Unreal...Everybody's got something to say these days... Hate to say this, but there are simply not enough consequeces for being just plain rude...every once in a while you can learn a valuable "life lesson" with a simple punch in the face...

I deal with crap like this everyday.. the lack of respect and just plain fearlessness of people shocks me.

Astounding....most people would be scared of getting b**** slapped over being that obnoxious.....The guy handled it way better than me, I think.
Oh, by the way...has anyone told her how incredibly filthy the production of her precious Prius (and battery pack) is? Makes a pickup truck look green! (not kidding, either).

What about all the food that hog is consuming. She is consuming resources other humans can use. Could probably feed 6-8 starving children on her diet. Reminds me of the guy the other day with the I LOVE AL GORE sticker on the back of his Prius. I just laughed at him as I cruised by in the Chevelle.

That was ridiculous, I have to give props to both of you for restraining yourself from retaliation.
That gal made as much sense as the vandals that broke into a hummer dealership and burnt several of the trucks because they are gas guzzlers... (yeah, nevermind polluting the environment by burning 6 of 'em)...
Nothing better than winning people over by being irrational, confrontational, and foul-mouthed in front of children.

Let's stir things up a bit here in the echo chamber: :)

Setting aside the woman's shrill, self-righteous, and obnoxious approach, do you guys think it's OK to let your vehicle idle for long periods of time just to run the air conditioning?

I think people should consider where the power is generated that is used to power their plugin vehicles. On another note when did it become ok to approach someone and be so rude. I find it hard to believe that you stayed calm and didnt do anything like as mentioned above rev your engine while she was bitching or turned the radio up. You are a bit more mature than I am.

Ive vowed to one day build a Prius that would make people like this, loose their minds...maybe even insight a lot of hatred my way...lol.

Cut the pan out of that thing, slide it over a nice safe tube chassis of course, BB, pipes sticking out of the fenders, loose piston rings for the smoke factor, motor sticking out of the hood with a make shift air cleaner, jacked up in the rear with old school Cragers, stock wheels in the front, dull paint, bondo patches, some visible tie wire holding door shut, bent steel antenna.....oh yeah dint forget a pair of home speakers in back seat........you get the picture...

To both sides of the coin...I say...Passion makes idiots of the smartest people, and makes the biggest idiots clever.

I can think of all the things I'd like to argue about if I were in his position, but really, him keeping his cool was probably the best thing. You can't argue with someone like that. They just eat it up. I'm sure she went home with a grin on her face because she really stuck it too him. Hopefully she see's this YouTube video and realizes how big of an idiot she was being.

It is his truck and his diesel fuel thus he can do with it what he wants. Agreed. From a legal point of view. What about from a social point of view? Is there a point where someone ought to consider others around him? Should his comfort be more important than other people around him? Diesel fumes (and noise) can quickly ruin an otherwise nice outdoor area.

Here's a similar situation: I take my hot rod to the car show, park among the participants, and leave the engine running. I like the way it sounds. Is that OK? After a few minutes, people nearby realize their eyes are beginning to water, and begin to suspect I'm happy with the situation as is. Should they ask me (the owner of the idling hot rod) to turn off my engine? If I say no, can they ask me to leave?

I guess my thought would have been on how obese people who don't take care of themselves keep driving the cost of health care up. Why have a car like that if you won't be here to enjoy it. I think its great to have your own opion but not when you press it oupon others

John, good point and i see what your saying,......but....thats not apples to apples, was that a Prius car show in the video?...lol. A car show is a different element then where this took place.

If its hot outside and I have kids with me, in a parking lot and my A/C works...Im running my vehicle, regardless if its a diesel or a jet engine. Now i may drive around or move my vehicle to be nice, but thats with in reason mind you. Most of it comes from how you approach people, that lady had no idea what that mans situation was, and came at him the wrong way.....common courtesy goes along.

This video isn't about Prius=stupid, it's about common courtesy. The woman was out of bounds in her approach, and the fellow in the diesel rig has some responsibility to be courteous to the people in the immediate area.

Let's up the ante: what if this was the sideline to a children's soccer game? Either party moving isn't really an option; after all, they are all there to watch their kids play. Now what? Is it OK for diesel-guy to run his rig the whole game?

As an aside, my sister-in-law and her husband are very environmentally conscious -- they don't use the A/C in their car, and drive goofy little econoboxes. They'd buy a Prius if they could afford it. When they come to visit, I always pick them up in my Duramax, making sure the A/C is blasting when they hop in. I get a bit of joy from that, I admit.

lol....ha well now again, by no means would I ever sit in a cooled vehicle while my kids are hard at work outside sweatin their butts off...but that doesnt mean I should judge the mom or dad with the sleeping infant in the vehicle.....should they move...maybe. If there isnt any other options for them, then maybe offer them to sit in the electric car, and run its A/C...lol....I dont know, Id say you approach the owner of the vehicle in a resectful manner and cuth...and try to convince them.....the smell is effecting everyone at the game

LMAO....next time you run the A/C...make sure all the windows are down as well...that make stoke the fire a bit as well....love it

There is no need to come up with every possible scenario in order to establish a simple rule that can be followed. In the case of the car show and the soccer gave the same principle must be applied, which is private property rights. The decision on whether running engines while a vehicle is stationary would fall on the property owners or the leaser of the property. In the case of the car show the organization that either owns or leases the space will make the rules. In the case of the soccer game (assuming it is in a city park) the city has the right to establish the rules. It's really that simple. However, enforcement is never simple and there will always be sticky situations. For instance, if a person parks how long do they have to shut the engine off? 10 seconds? 30 seconds? 1 minute? Who is to say and who is to time it? It can all become rather ridiculous.

The video appeared to take place in a public (city owned) park so it would be up to the city to make and enforce the rules. As if the police didn't have enough to do. Then maybe we should have the enviro-police. I am sure the Prius lady would love that.

In practical terms, all the Prius lady had to do was ask nicely and I am sure the guy would have shut the truck off, as he seemed quite reasonable. As the old saying goes, "you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar..." It was also quite interesting to see his wife step in immediately to protect her children. Don't mess with Mama Bear...

It all makes for fun discussion and reasoning thats for sure.

But it IS pretty simple....the honey theory, common courtesy, treat your fellow human how you would want to be treated, try not to impose your beliefs unless asked.....think before you speak.....Dont be a dooosh.

I'd like to point out, if I may, that there was two Priuses in the lot and he was awfully quick with a video camera/phone. I can't help but think there might be a bit of provocation. If he saw two prisuses(what's the plural for Prius?lol) in the back of a parking lot and parked next to them with the engine running, that makes him just as much of an ass as the woman.

There is a segment of the diesel truck scene that thinks more black smoke is good. These individuals make it politically difficult for all diesel truck owners and are routenly encouraged to clean up their truck tunes on the diesel forums I frequent. My Duramax is tuned with EFI Live in conjuction with a long list of intake and exhaust mods and rarely emits any visible smoke but it does smell at idle. For that reasion I rarely idle it for very long. The new tier 3 and tier 4 diesel engines are so much cleaner than diesels of even 10 years ago. The days of seeing trucks drive down the hiway with smoke billowing from the stacks is coming to an end as the newer generation of diesels replace the older trucks. That said, the Prius owner has no moral or ethical grounds for her inappropriate outburst and to be honest I don't know that I would have kept my cool as well as the truck driver in the video.

It's funny because the Prius causes more damage to the environment than nearly any other new car.

The batteries are not quite the most environmentally-friendly to produce or especially dispose of, even when recycled (I think). But ontop of all this (guess it's generalized for all new vehicles).. the sheer amount of plastic in them... what happens when all that needs to be recycled? Can't be as easy as compacting it into a cube and melting it down. It's surprising the percentage of plastic that literally can't be recycled one bit, simply chopped up into small pieces and used as aggregate/filler in stuff.

And don't even get me started on the "OMG hydrogen so clean only H2O comes out of the tailpipe"... yea where does the hydrogen come from? And even "clean coal" is still so dirty, only marginally less environmentally-friendly than coal production of previous, as far as I'm aware.

I'm a big proponent of clean diesel/bio diesel/bio diesel & electric hybrid/straight-up electric... but it's down-right depressing that there are those out there that actually have diesel tunes with the direct intent of creating the largest, blackest exhaust cloud they can on loaded acceleration... makes me embarrassed and I don't even own a diesel although I wish I did.

Sorry end of rant :/

What about the Prius and its allegedly grim environmental impact? The cause of the controversy seems to be a report called "Dust to Dust" by Oregon-based CNW Marketing Research. The report claims a Prius has a higher lifetime energy cost than a Hummer, an assertion cited by George Will in 2007 in his syndicated newspaper column. But the report is ludicrous. It evidently was self-published, lists no authors, quotes no technical literature, never explains its methodology, and contains numerous unsupported and often bizarre assertions. (Sample: a Prius will have a life span of only 109,000 miles whereas an H1 will last for 379,000 miles, apparently the basis for the contention that the Hummer’s per-mile costs are lower.) Only a fool or a commentator with an ax to grind would take such nonsense seriously.

So I don't think you should believe everything you hear...

Lot of this thread seems to be some type of axe grinding with Hybrid vehicles rather than just the simple unbelievable rudeness of the woman involved. I'd contend that she would be a rude person no matter what kind of car she drove. Not like I haven't seen plenty of very rude people in just about every type of vehicle including other large pick up trucks...

I have to agree with Ed. A lot of people bring up the whole "A Hummer is better for the environment than a Prius", but it's not true.

Now I hate Prius' because: they're ugly, they're not that nice, they're over priced, they're slow, they only get marginally better mileage than other new compact cars (many now get over 40mpg and cost a lot less), and they handle like crap. Those are good reasons to not like them.

I do worry about the batteries not lasting as long as I'd expect (especially given their cost). It makes me think about how every laptop battery I see has it's lifespan shrink over time. I'm not so worried about the mileage as much as in 10 years is that battery going to hold a charge worth a damn. Maybe... maybe not.

Trevon

Okay, we all know shes dumb.

And sources...there are so many for both sides because its such a huge debate. You will likely find that any article written is completely biased to the author. This statement may invalidate my points but I'll rant anyway.

Saying the prius is better than a hummer is just wrong! I have been looking for an H1 for a while now (probably making a purchase soon) and spoke with owners and a diesel truck that gets 12-13 mpg just isn't that bad. There are some 11,000 Hummer H1's made in their production run ('92-'06) and there have been more than a million priuses sold since 2000.

The prius is also assembled from materials from roughly 5+ countries all over the world...that requires a lot of shipping. By the time you receive your fancy new prius I am positive it has been part of a group that has done more damage to the world than a production years worth of H1's and have been driving for 10+ years.

Mileage isn't everything, its almost nothing. 37 mpg is pretty terrible in comparison to what others our doing. Its our government stopping it, look at the Volkswagon Polo Bleu...a 3 cylinder diesel that gets 70+ mpg. Vehicles as such are restricted from the U.S. for many reasons though.

The prius is just an excuse for people to try and prove "they're doing their part to save the world." It gives them a warm fuzzy feeling inside and is a step to put them up on their high horse.

I just like to enjoy what I drive...If the combined mileage of my 3 vehicles is less than 25 I will just laugh, and at least I'll enjoy driving. I definitely would not really hold back against someone like this in the video...ignorance goes both ways. I spend a lot of time researching things I don't like (mainly Macintosh and going green [for reasons other than saving money -- seems to mostly be a "look at me! I'm doing good!" status thing]), you have to know your enemy to beat them.

Never really cared much until I started looking at Hummers so seriously and just finding facts that they aren't terrible.

I sort of wondered if he'd wandered into a Hybrid parking lot show:eek:
I too found it interesting that the camera was rolling the entire time, from beginning to end.
Some people do things just to provoke a response.
Also wondered initially if it were "staged" but I don't think you could stage stupid to that extreme.

I know what you mean. I rarely see diesel trucks, private or commercial, smoking anymore. At least those that aren't a total POS to begin with.
Most are very clean, and the newer ones by GM, you can even barely hear the diesel sound.
Now Ferd, I mean Ford, and Dodge, especially Dodge, will still rattle the windows of the house!

And there's really no reason to intentionally make smoke just to pi$$ someone off. All it does is add ammo to the idiots claims of ecological damage and irresponsibility. It gives all diesels a bad name through association.

And diesel stinks, period.
If you're going to idle long times in crowed spaces, burn WVO and go to McDonals.
The french fry smell will give everyone around you the munchies, and McD's will appreciate the business:rotfl:

And if he did intentionally park next to them and let it idle, then he's an arse as well.
As for her, and people like her, I have a low tolerance for stupid....

I applaud your judgment and respect sir!

First, and it's seldom said, THANK YOU!!
Just about everything at some point, moves by truck, and it's guys and gals like you, that make that happen.
It's not a "easy" life, and with the idiot regulators and regulations :here!:that keep coming out of DC and the states, it's harder and harder for you guys to make a living:(
Again, Thanks for all you do!

You made some very valid points in your post.

Like most, I've had my issues with "big rigs" over the years.
I can't count the times in a week, some SFB (S**t For Brains) will tailgate me in a tractor trailer. I mean at 50 mph (usually in a 40-45 zone too), I'll look back and there's "Grill & Bumper" filling my rearview:seizure:. Since mirrors tend to distort, I'll glance back and sure enough, there they are....2 maybe three car lengths at best, off my rear!?
No way they can stop. It's like they want to push you down the road. Now mind you, I'm not a left lane hog. If I'm in the left lane, you're going to have to peddle faster to keep up.
But damn man! get off my arse!

I drive a Scion XD as a DD because I travel (or did) a lot. putting on 200-500 miles a day was nothing. My truck @ 9-12 mpg wasn't cutting it. The Scion @ 32+ is much better.

Of course, my "gut" instinct, is to brake check them! Let them pay for the new ride (I really want a diesel Mega Cab:drool: ), but common sense and physics always over ride that basic desire :pat:
Besides, I was raised better than that! My parents always said, 2 wrongs don't make a "right."

What I have found very effective, is to get out of the way and let them pass...then get all the numbers you can...truck/trailer number, tag number, ICC number, name of the company and the phone number....then make a call to the fleet safety manager or CEO:naughty:
The pen (or in this case the phone) really is mightier than the sword:headbang:

On the flip side, I've been the passenger in wreckers, flatbeds and other heavy rigs over the years, and have watched people zip around the driver, then slow down quickly.

Once, I was having my POV towed to a shop on the back of a flatbed.
My patrol car was deadlined for repairs and I was using my personal vehicle to get back and forth to work where I'd pick up a fleet vehicle. On the way to work, it broke down and had to be towed.

I'm in full uniform and have "all" of my equipment with me:)

Remember SFB I spoke about earlier. Well, they're in all segments of life!
Here's one that apparently decided the wrecker was moving too slowly in the RIGHT lane, and zipped around him. That was ok. It was what followed that earned him a visit.
He barely clears the front of the cab, cuts back over hard in front of the loaded rig (loaded with MY freakin' car!),...and brakes!
The driver did a heck of a job not squashing that POS like a roach.

Then...the genius flips off the driver. I guess he couldn't see the passenger, so I thought I'd give him a closer look at the next intersection which was about...now:)

Pinned between the rig and the car ahead of him at a brand new red light (going to be there for at least a minute), I dropped down out of the cab and approached the driver.....I'll let you use your imagination as to the look on the morons face, but it was priceless!!!:lmao::lmao::woot:

And do you recall the "equipment" I mentioned earlier?
That "equipment" included my assigned citation (ticket) book, which at the end of our little chat, was nowsix (6) pages (tickets) lighter.

Expired DL-less than 4 months-civil violation.
Expired Tag- less than 4 months as well.
No proof of Insurance -He'll have to bring a copy to the office or court. He'll still end up with a piddly inconvenience fine.
Improper change of lane/course
Reckless driving-(that one is criminal in our state)
No seat belt in use.

If it weren't such a PITA to do it, I'd have put him in jail for the reckless and impounded his car!
(did I mention my low tolerance for STUPID?)

Payback are a beotch!
Oh, and the tow was on the house :lmao:

The point is, there are better ways.
You want to make a point? Fine.
Doing that sort of thing, the only "point" you'll make is "you lose!"

That 30k-80k rig will do some unbelievable damage to your econo-box, and other than some cosmetic damage, not hurt the rig a bit.

What people don't stop to think about is the psychological damage they'll do to a rig driver if/when he kills or maims someone.
I've worked enough crashes to realize that most are very responsible, hard working and safety conscious individuals, and not the "bully of the road" many make them out to be.
I've seen first hand the mental trauma a bad crash can have on a big rig driver, even when they did everything they could to avoid the crash, including risking their own lives.

Anyway, I'm getting OT (again), sorry.

You're right, the people who handle themselves like idiots, well, are idiots, and lose credibility the moment most of them open their pie holes.
Sort of like most politicians!

Stay safe out there.

The good part of all this is this. She is still fat, ugly and stupid, and she will still be that way tomorrow, I will thank God more often because of her, because I don't think like her, neither as fat nor as ugly either!

I would have escalated that **** until she did something that got herself arrested. I have co-workers that bug me, in a good natured way, about driving a truck. I like to set their car alarms off with my exhaust.

She looks like she has been feeding on her own self-righteousness.

I have seen this type of behavior at places I have worked and had a supervisor who really was good at understanding things for what they were instead of what people try to make them to be with false words and accusations.

Think of the time spent and the actions taken and the placing they were being conducted in. The lady in the prius had more time and energy spent in arguing and trying to force her thoughts and problems on the guy in the truck that she could have easily just gotten in her prius and spent very little energy moving herself and getting totally away from the problem. Being in a public place it used to be the rule that if you didn't like the spot you were in and the people already there around you , you took it as you should have gotten there earlier to get a better spot. But these days people think they should be able to show up and get you removed because they don't like you for there own personal reasons just like the moving next to a racetrack scenario.
That woman would have been written up or fired in the work places I have been for harrasing another employee. I know this is just another side to it all but it also represents where some people get confused in the mindset that is allowed in the time and place you exist at the moment. There are people with the mindset in a moment like that , that would really hurt her and not think twice. She is very lucky that people don't always come down to her level even though she thinks she is above most in her righteous own mind.

You can't fix stupid is the real caption to be found for that one.

The ironic part of it all is that the lady believes the diesel smoke will kill everyone sooner which would leave the truck owner dead before her, but I doubt that will be the case.

It is also kind of ironic that she was bashing the guy for being in marketing while not seeing how she herself has been successfully manipulated by Toyota's marketing...
