Bonspeed should change their name to Bonslow! I am entering week eleven after ordering a set of Bonspeed Huntington Brushed wheels (18x8/20x10). Other than that little setback, I have the car ready with new brakes and suspension.. Hope you all like.
I know, its an A-body :)

Some of us are a little partial to A-bodies.
How about some more info about the car?

im in the process of transitioning this car from a factory suspension class drag setup to more of a pro-touring setup.. Competing is tough with a limited budget and a car i dont really race the car into the ground.. Managed to get it running in the 9.80s @ 140mph.. I have had the car for 13 yrs, the setup now consists of a fully caged chevelle. metco adjustable billet rear suspension w/anti roll system, Global west front upper and lowers with Qa1 Coil Overs.. Brakes are Aerospace pro street front and rears (Local Shop). Engine is a 406ci small block that produces 640hp/588lbs tourqe.. Trans is a Turbo 400 and rear is a 12-bolt w/4.11sa
This year is wheels/brakes and suspension.. Next year im gonna focus on making more streetable horsepower (i.e. move to a hydraulic roller instead of solid roller)

Those will be worth the wait. Seems like most custom wheel places take forever. I've heard CCW is good about filling orders quickly, but most others seem to have your experience.

Your small block has some serious oomph :icon996: . Whose cylinder heads are you using?

This is one of the nicest 68 chevelles I have seen. What did you do to your firewall. Its going to look sick with those wheels. Whats the backspacing on front and back.
asmith1968

4 1/2" in the front and 5" in the rear

68 "A" bodies are OK I guess if your into that sort of thing......
Nice ride, I can't wait to see how it will look with the Bonspeeds on it.

its been a while since i did the firewall.. i smothed it and had a buddy spray it.. flexstone i think? it goes on with a gun. its a pricey paint, i do remember that. breaks it up a little i think.

Your Chevelle is very nice! It’s going to look great with the wheels. :icon996:
I was into cars long before I could drive and back then the 68-69 Chevelles were my favorite cars.
Now 43 cars later and I still have yet to own one :hammer:

Very nice car! What size rear tires are you planning to run? Things might get kinda snug with only 5" backspacing. Stock width rear end?
asmith1968
07-05-2005, 03:01 PM
yes, stock width.. Im nervous too.. Im going on the advice givin from a bonspeed tech (there muscle car guru apparently).. It will not be stock width if they are wrong.
295/40/20 is the tire i am hoping for..

Being a loyal A-body owner too,I wish you well and hope they fit. But,I ran 20x10's with 5.5" backspacing and 275/35/20 Michelin Pilots on the rear of my former 68 El Camino. They fit fine but less backspace would've caused clearance problems. So,I'm concerned about your wheel & tire combo with that backspacing. If any way possible,Bonspeed needs to build those wheels with at least 5.5" backspacing and with a 295/40, 5.75" might be optimum.

well.. i have a good relationship with a local chassis. If the wheels do not fit, i will make the difference in axle tube length.. God knows i dont want to have to deal with the wait on the wheels again.
I called these guys at least twice about backspacing. they assured me i would be good. I wanted to push the wheel out as far as possible in an effort to clear the inner portion of the wheel wheel where the outter diameter of the tire would come in contact with.. i rolled the lip on both sides several years ago, maybe that will help.

Ok,my last post on the subject. As much money as those damn wheels cost, you should NOT have to modify your car to make them fit. Get on their a$$ and have them built to your specs. After all, you're paying for the right stuff,,not Bonspeed.
Good luck in whatever you choose to do.

I like those wheels as well, I was also considering the Delta's or the Clutch's. What is the going rate for a set of 4. Haven't found any prices online for them. Could call I suppose but I like the detective work involved...

I just got my bonspeeds in the mail after 5 months and i got another slap in the face! BFG Gforce TA 245/40-18s are on backorder! no one has them.. They are saying mid october b4 another production and the are not making enough to fill the backorders! Has anyone heard any different?

If thats there attitude this seems just to keep the price up as the more you make on a run the cheaper the wheel, its the set up that costs. I would send them back and get a set thats off the shelf if they argue tell them they broke contract as they told you 11 wks .
No wheel worth that wait and what if theres a prob then what do you do wait another 11 wks.
paul67
wow those hunnington's are nice good choice and for the size it's not that bad of a price either.
thanks for the advice. ill post pictures of the finished product.
Any updates???? or Pics?

That sure is one beautiful Chevelle! Still waitin on tires? I see you are running a vacum pump. How much neg crank pressure are you running? Anyways, can't wait to see the car with the wheels and tires installed.

For the street, just enough to keep the crank seal from leaking - around 5". I had the header evac kit on it when i ran a less restricted exhaust but had to change it to machanical vacuum when i went with a more restrictive system.
Tires should be on tommorrow, ill post some pics. I wont have matching fronts, they are on backorder.:crying:
