Today my Wife called me to tell me that my darling little 3 year old took a Bic Pen to the screen of my Brother-n-law's 42" wide screen TV. It had one of those safety screens on it but he gouged it pretty bad. Long story short...it has to be replaced. I called around to find out how to acquire a replacement for it and all I've been able to come up with is one company in Michigan called 'Mighty Screens' or something like that and they want $279 to come out and replace it. I just about had a heart attack. $279??!!! FOR A STUPID PIECE OF PLASTIC??!!!! I could buy a 27" TV for what that sheet of plastic is going to cost. Sounds like the bulk of that price is having that joker come out to the house to do the cutting and replacement.
Does anyone know of an alternative I might have? Or am I screwed? Any help you can give me would be appreciated.
And no....I haven't disowned my 3 year old.
.....at least not yet anyway. :banghead:

Well, I've never owned a big TV like that, but can you get the piece out yourself? If yes, can you make a lexan replacement?
If it were me, I'd paint the edges black and rivet it to the outside of the TV so it looks like a racecar window. :)

I work for a custom home theater company and we have run into issues with this before. Problem is that the "shield" on alot of the no name companies is absolute junk...plastic crap that yellows from cleaner and that's it. The real problem is that no company makes that junk, just the OEM supplier at OEM prices (we all know what that means) The only after market companies that make shields make good ones. Ones where the "ribs" in the screen are at precise angles to filter out glare...where the coating on the screen only allows Red, Green and Blue color and blends to come out ....special material to resist scratching....etc...etc. When we price out some for cutomers, they're usually in the $275-$350 range for a custom cut.
However, I'm a dealer for alot of different manufacturers so I might be able to siwng you an inside piece if you tell me who makes your brother-in-law's big screen and what model it is. If I can't lift it off a parts set, I can probably get you a price better than 279 since we all take care of each other over here. Email me keith at zefhix dot com and I'll see what we can do from there....
Also, you can take his shield out for now (provided no kids and pets) and it won't hurt the set or picture quality.

Just a thought, and no protection from kids when done, but most home theater gurus remove the protective screen that is factory installed. They add too much brightness to the screen to give you that "real" theater feel.
