im really considering building a beater c3 or c4 vette. i work on vettes every day (its my side job), but have never owned one of my own. my wife and i really like all the folks from our local corvette club, but we are unable to join due to not owning one.
my thoughts are going along these lines: late c3 or early c4. baked paint shot over with DP90 primer. tinted windows, DARK. ported and polished L98 aluminum heads, MAF, TB, and intake (have em already). flowmaster exhaust (already own, but for a c4). big sway bars, poly bushings, c5 brake upgrade (have most of the parts), 4 point cage, C5 Z06 wheels and tires, and ebay sport seats.
the only problem is finding a suitably priced vette. with the state budget cuts (both of us are civil servants, she's a teacher and im a social worker) were hedging all our bets financially. anyone know where i could find one almost free?
and tell me why this is a bad idea. i know it has to be for reasons other than the money, i just cant for the life of me figure out why.

C-4s are cheap, cheap. both now and when you want to dump one. Personally, given your picks, I would have to do a 78-82 myself. I had a 91 and couldn't give it away, just saying.

and i actually like the c4's more than the c3's based upon driving experience.
where are the bargain basement priced cars these days? all the beater c4;s in my area are STILL 5+k
thanks for the suggestion though, bill.
by the way, loved the charger at RTTH.

Try www.searchtempest.com
I did a quick search and found many Vette's between $2000-$4000 here in the southeast. Good luck.

I agree with Bill.... If your not planning on selling the car then the time and money invested really doesnt matter, but if you ever have to sell it... your gonna take a bath on anything you put in it.
c4s are dirt cheap here in cali!! build it !!!
sorry can't talk you out of a good idea

You came to us to talk you out of buying/building a Corvette? Really?
Sorry but I say go for it as well. Check around places like racingjunk.com and sccaforums.com, you may find someone needing to sell a Vette that has a good bit done to it, could save yourself some money.

Oh yeah, Mike, don't do it! Horrible idea! What were you thinking? :fingersx:
Are you happy now? It's like going to the local tavern to get help with a drinking problem... Just build it and keep us updated!

C4 is my vote. "like going to a local tavern to get help with a drinking problem"... that's hilarious! I guess we can call this hangout pro touring anonymous.

As a C3 owner, I'd say go C4. It already has better suspension than 95% of the cars on the road, there are plenty of easy upgrades (C5/6 brakes for one), and they are dirt cheap if you really look. Plus, the diehard Vette guys hate them, which is reason enough right there!

No, I just found it in a quick search. That thing is sinister !
I agree w/ Joe above about using the C4 platform. They have good suspension right out of the box, especially the late ones. Heck, if you do this right you'll have less in the whole car than some guys have in their wheel & tire combo ! .....and be faster than many. :)

Coming here to get talked out of building a car is like going to your local crack dealer for drug counseling.

I can't remember the user name, but I'm pretty sure that car belongs to a member in Italy on TwinTurbo's site:
http://www.vettemod.com
Check out TwinTurbo's car, and his brother's, if you like this one. There is some pretty sick stuff on that site.
