Hello all , ill just get straight to it. Im 17 and reside in winnipeg right now and am wondering what to do for College/Uni to get where a good amount of you guys are working for a quality shop. To get to something like Ohio state tech college would be awesome, but it costs a pretty penny plus all the issues to go with it. Yet here in Manitoba, there are places like Winnipeg tech and what not but im not sure if i should both because you do not really get noticed by good shops. Should i just get hours with a mechanic i know and go to the college close to me? Should i consider the states?

- Just a little background info, my dad and I have a 1980 firebird that we've been slowly buildin for 5 years. The 455 engine is over at SD Perf right now getting a major overhaul becoming a 463 I believe. Right now the firewall has been my main focus. We have the aftermarket vintage AC for the car, I did not like how the panel for the bulk head welded in was sticking out so much, right now there is a big hole in the firewall where it was. Going to weld in a flat peice of metal. Cars have been my life. Stacks of car magazines, spending countless nights browsing forums, performance sights. I would love to work with my hands. Definitely not the type to sit at a desk all day.

-Happy thanksgiving to everyone here in Canada :)

my advice: if you are wanting to own / open your own shop, get a business degree. Most of the car-related stuff can be learned on the job (such as through internships or part time jobs while going to school), while the business related items will ensure your business can succeed.

Thanks for the reply, and not so much my own shop, but becoming an employee at a place like HPI Customs or something similar

I would say go to whatever school you feel is the best for what you want to do. Yeah, college is expensive. But that's what loans are for. The important thing is to get the education you need to set yourself up fr the career you want.

Best of luck pursuing your dreams.......... and how about some pics of that 'Bird? :)

Well, the problem is that alright say i manage to get to Ohio state tech or something. While im in the states, im sure i would have to get a job or something to pay off that loan. In addition, what happens when I would finish the year? I got that 20,000$ loan to pay off. I got good skills in whatever i choose. Do I go to a local mechanic i know back here at home to get experience? Its the after effects of going to college in the states im concerned about

I don't know what the Canadian government or banks offer but here in the US you can get college loans that are no interest and no payments until after you graduate or stop attending school.

During summer and winter breaks it would obviously be best to work, hopefully with in your chosen profession. Even during the semester if you can get a part time at a shop you can add a little money to your pocket and start building some experience for your resume'.

Like anything else it will end up boiling down to how bad you want it. You have to decide how stretching yourself for a few years stacks up to how bad you want to work in this industry.
