I recently picked up an 80 trans am for a Auto-x/Road Course build and have found a little bit of rust on the rear frame rail left side.
My question is what to do. I would love to replace the whole rail but no one makes a repop and I haven't found anyone with a clean rail.
I don't necessisarilly need to replace with stock but I am not in a situation to fabricate and being in the middle of northern north dakota we don't have much around here for race fab.
I would love to just have it cut out and replaced but don't have anywhere to take it.
I have suspension stuff ready to go on but don't want to start without fixing this first.

what about this> clicky (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/78-79-80-81-CAMARO-GM-OEM-TAILPAN-TRUNK-PAN-FRAME-RAIL-/310345305960?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1980|Model%3ACamaro&hash=item4842058f68), you could cut the rail section you needed out and use that, you might even be able to get them to ship you just that part and save on shipping?

Magic wand? Blink your eyes and nod your head? I don't know what to tell you... You can't fabricate and there is no one around to do the fabricating... I am sure a replacement rail could be found but, even if you found one, how would it get installed? There is a lot of work and fabrication involved and if you can't do it, who will? I am not trying to cause trouble. I just don't know how to answer your question.

That is only the rear portion of the rail and not the portion I need

I guess would it be good enough to chop out just the rusted section and replace with fresh steel of the same thickness or go for a whole rail replacement if I could manage to find one.

ditto what Ghostwhite says. I had a similar frame rail on mine that had to be patched. The other side was actually worse and a large section was replaced. Get out that sandblaster and find out what you've got to work with!

Did you use a donor section or just same thickness?
