Building the Great One – 1964 Pontiac GTO

I originally purchased my 1964 Pontiac GTO in 1989, during my high school senior year. The car was picked up in Jamestown California, a small mining town in the Mother Lode of California. For $1000 I bought the car with an engine, Muncie 4 speed transmission and enough extra parts to fill the back of a pickup bed. After a quick call over to the Pontiac Historical Society, I received information back on the car which verified that it was in fact a true 1964 GTO. As summer progressed so did the dismantling of the car.

Things were starting to progress. The motor was sent off to Vic Hubbard’s in Hayward, CA to rebuild, but they determined that the engine was shot. Two blocks later I finally got an engine back. During that time I had the Muncie 4 speed rebuilt and dropped in a posi rear. The entire stock suspension was rebuilt and put back into place. The body was then set on the updated frame. Then life took its natural course, education, family, work, etc… The car was parked in the back corner of the shop and wasn’t touched for years.

Then one day I came across this site and determined that it’s time for me to pull out the GTO and finish it. I have once again disassembled the entire car!

Next on the project list is to get the factory frame welds stitched up a bit. The factory welds were horrible! Then off to the powder coater for a little color and onto the suspension assembly. Hope to have a roller by the end of the month.

Great project...I love Pontiacs. A post GTO is fairly rare...most of the ones you see around are hardtops....I personally like the post coupe body....its supposed to be a bit lighter, but mainly they are stiffer than the hardtops.

Next up get the upper bushing pressed back into the rear end. I had to remove them for powder coating. After that I will install the rear end, with the upper and lower control arms.

Quick update --- Finally got around to install the rear end, upper and lower rear control arms and new springs under the frame. Next up rear shocks and sway bar. Then I will move to the front to tackle the suspension.

I have the same front suspension on my 64 GTO and I did not have much trouble bolting it together on the bare frame.

Hi Chris. My recollection is that I was able to compress them by hand. It depends on how many spacers you are trying to install. I have an LS motor so you might need more spacers than I used. Have you tried to assemble it yet?

I am planning on using an LS3 engine. After reading thru several other A Body installations of similar suspension I was going to go with an aluminum spacer and two shims. I will try mocking up the suspension and see how well it is going to go together.

Here is the latest update, I was able to finally get the rear end together. I bolted up the Hellwig Adjustable pro-touring sway bar. I was not overly impressed with the quality of the mounting hardware. I am not sure if they are powder coated or not, but appears to be a very rough finish . If you are planning on using a Currie Enterprise 9 inch rear end, you will need to acquire larger (wider and longer) u bolts to mate the brackets up to the rear end. In order for this sway bar to work correctly in my application I had to move the bracket inward onto the center house of the rear end. In the pictures you will notice that the bar is somewhat closer to the housing on the passenger side. The brackets have been tighten down to where the bar will not move (I guess the bar should not be able to move?). Also, I am not sure if there is a way to even out the gap on both side, if anyone has input on this please let me know how to fix this problem.

If you are looking for GM replacement mounting hardware I used http://inlinetube.com/. I purchased the power steering unit bolts, front and rear upper and lower controls bolts, and the front shock retainers from them.

I noticed that the logo on the upper control arm sleeves have SPC in the same direction on the driver side, and are pointing opposite each other on the passenger side, is there a reason for this? Also is there a way to fix this? See pictures below

No problem with the logos, but the arms need to be installed on the car with the bolted joint to the rear of the ball joint.

Great I will swap those around. Spoke with Mark at SC&C sounds like he was not surprised that the logo's on the adjustment sleeve don't match up on both sides.

Without the weight of the motor sitting on the frame rails, it seems this was an easy solution to get the front springs in.

Unfortunately, the Varishock will not go up thru the bottom of the lower control arm due to their size and the opening on the SPC lower control arms. I will have to mount the shock first, then place the coil on the lower control arm before I can start to compress the coil.

Be careful with those compressors...they scare the bageebeez out of me...lot's of stored energy just waiting for a chance to get loose.

Yeah unfortunately the Varishocks don't have the extended length of OEM style shocks so that means you'll have to compress the spring that much more to get the shock bolted. Kind of a pain - but we did it with a complete car so it was just a matter of using a floor jack. Good luck.

Hi Dave, it looks like I will need to take the rear bar off an flip it over. Currently, I have the bar titled up. I don't recall seeing anything in the instructions that talked about the tilt of the bar, and the pictures were some what difficult to determine the positioning. I spoke to you a few weeks back regarding getting larger ubolts to mount the bar, so those did work out.

I am planning on going with Baer Brakes. The front will be their Pro Plus 14" rotors (4301352) and on the rear the SS4 Plus 13" rotor (4262263c). Now my dilemma is choosing the caliper color. Below is a picture of the color my car will be. The choices are Red w/ Black Script, Black w/ Red Script, Silver w/ Red Script.

Hi Dave, I flipped over the rear sway bar. Now it has more clearance but definitely sits about the bars thickness below the rear axle housing. Notice where I put the clamps for the rear bar. I have to mount them more inboard on the center section housing and not the axle tubes so it will bite down and clamp to the housing. I would think the bar in this position may present a problem with the ride height of the vehicle.

Today was a great day, I successfully bolted up the passenger side SPC A Arms and the Speedtech AFX Spindles. It went together rather easy. Much easier than I had originally expected after reading several posts regard the difficulty some other members had. Tomorrow I will bolt up the driver side, then Monday order some brakes and get ready to purchase the engine and transmission.

cspecken- Once you put the body on the frame the suspension will compress and the bar will rotate upward. It should be even with the bottom of your center section. You can adjust the length of the end links for final adjustment.

Finally got the front end bolted all up, and now the chassis is down on all fours!!!! Started with the installation of the Hellwig front sway bar, but noticed that the holes in the frame where not that snug with the 5/16 bolts I had, waiting to here back from the Pontiac board on the correct size. Notice how I flipped around the rally wheels! Also, ordered my brakes Baer Pro Plus up front with Baer SS4 Plus in the rear.

Currently mocking up the car for the body work. Also, in the process of getting the firewall smooth out, to cover up some holes for the Vintage Air setup, and new American Autowire kit. Decided to go done the body work first since the majority of the other items (Engine and Trans) will be fairly straight forward. I would rather not use up my new engine warranty, while the car is locked up in paint jail!!!

For those running Vintage Air, should I have any mounts welded on the inside of the firewall to hold the system up?

Quick update, sent the car out to have the firewall done correctly and the body work started. They started the work with removing old firewall that was previously added, hund the A/C unit, and created a new clutch/pedal box that is for the new Wilwood setup I recently purchased. I will update as the project progresses. Here are a few pictures.

Hi Vince, I took my car to three different shops to get estimates and look at what they had to offer. After a rather long day on the road, I decided Dominator was the choice. Unfortunately, I didn't make it over your direction. Dominator's close proximity (35 min) to my house was also factored into my overall decision. Everyone's estimates seemed very comparable. So far I am happy with the results.

Progress! I now have a firewall with pedals and Vintage Air unit installed. There will be a few more braces and brackets welded onto the inside of the firewall. In order for the fender to fit properly they stepped down the metal to allow the fender tab to fit nicely, look great. Next will be the mockup of the motor and transmission to modify the tunnel for proper fitment.

Looking good, I will be following your build. Good choice on the pedals.
I am jealous of your rust free body, I will be doing major rust repair for a while since I am slow.
Had the same thought of engine warranty running out before I get a chance to drive it so I grabbed a junkyard LQ9 to do all of my dry fitting with.

Here are some pictures of the progress being made on the GTO engine and transmission mockup. Ran into a couple vendor related issues but finally got those worked out last month. Things appear to be progressing nicely. Trying to determine how low we can set the engine into the stock cross member. I am using 66-67 Chevy small block mounts bolted to Dirty Dingo adjustable LS brackets. I acquired a Champ Racing pan to allow for more clearance as well. All of this is bolted to the T56 via a Quicktime LS bell housing. You can see in the picture we have some room to work with. The engine may have to go in a little lower to get the drive line angle right.

Great build and I have a deep affection for the old GTOs as I use to "borrow" my dad's '65 389 tripower and go for a burn when he wasn't around. Quick update, new tunnel almost 100% complete. Had to make up a new cross member to support the T56 transmission. The shop threw in some exhaust ports to keep the pipes up off the ground! Waiting the arrival of the kooks stainless headers to make sure everything is going to work together nicely. Next up is the body.

Mounted up kooks headers. Appears to fit nicely, the lower A Arm mounting point will need a bit trimmed off. Body panel alignment and metal work have begun. The guys over at Dominator are working their way around the back half of the car. The passenger quarter was replaced at onetime, and the previous person did not do a good job. The top of the quarter panel was smashed flat, where the factory had a gentle roll. The metal magician's has to cut it out and repair the area! My car was made very early in the production year, and did not have a roof support running from the front of the car to the rear. They had to install one, to prevent the roof from sounding like a tin can and give it some rigidity.

My car is an early production build, I also have another 1964 GTO that has a support which runs the length of the roof (Front to Rear). I had the shop put the support in there to give it some rigidity. Made a big difference. Your car looks like it is turning out pretty nice.

Looks like it has been sometime since I updated this post. Car now has color on it (finally). Will still need to be cut and polished. It took a lot of work to get to this point. Awaiting the chrome / aluminum items to come back from Superior Chrome in San Jose. Installing sound deadening material from Raam Audio http://www.raamaudio.com/. This is taking more time than expected but so far it appears that it is worth the effort. Chrome goodies are ready to be picked up, plan to pick them up within the next week. LS3 engine build is underway and should arrive in the next couple of weeks. After the motor arrives it is time to go on a shopping spree. Radiator (?), Clutch (McLeod RST Twin Disc), Hydralic Throw Out Bearing (?), Exhaust Borla XR1's, and Fuel Tank (Rick's).

The jute may help,but Andrew is referring to a compressed foam product. Take a look at the dynaliner from dynamat. There are several companies out there who have similar products.

Quick update Baer 6p's have been mounted, stainless lines have been run. Under dash wiring has been put into place and the Vintage Air unit has been installed. Quicktime bell housing is currently being indexed to engine. Should have the engine and transmission installed in the next week or two, then onto the exhaust.

Quick update on the progress that has been made since the last post. The 600 hp Engine and T56 Magnum transmission are now in. Almost all of the wiring has been completed. The battery has been mocked up, with the CTEK charger. II MUCH fuel tank vent has been installed along with a rick's stainless steel tank. The Baer brakes are installed and plumed.

Still outstanding is the cold air intake and exhaust.

I have not had any experience with the battery yet. It is about the same price as a Optima Red or Yellow. The battery only weighs in at 21 lbs half the weight of the Optima. We determine that it would fit nicely up front and tucked under the front fender.

Quick update - Exhaust is almost completed. 3 Inch Stainless, Cross Over Pipe, Borla XRP's. Check out the exhaust tips I think they turned out nicely.

Thanks for the positive comments. I really like the way the battery and ctek fit nicely up front. Contemplated having everything in the trunk, but it all worked out nicely up front.

We are discussing ways to add a little support to the mufflers facing the front of the car. Looking at incorporating a drive shaft loop/hoop.

Currently, I have a few items getting powder coated, once completed the front end will go to final assembly. Fluids and fuel will be added. Hope to fire up soon. That would be a great Christmas present. I will definitely upload videos.

Hi, Dominator Street Rods, in Tracy Ca built them for me. And yes you are correct they incorporated the stock 64 Pontiac GTO rubber pads.

There are several ground locations in the front engine bay. Also grounds running from chassis to engine. A terminal stud located under the dash was created as a ground locations for items inside the car.

The Falken Azenis RT-615K tires were mounted today. I got the itch and had to seem them installed on the car. So I made the 40 minute journey over to my car and put them on!!!

What's been going on?

I am just awaiting for my car to be resprayed! The painter who originally laid down the color was not good. It is going on year two since it has been painted, and the owner has assured me that it will be within the next two weeks. Although that is what I have been hearing for the last year! Paint jail here we are. Once the paint is completed it is time to order some glass, and begin to wrap up the car.
