View Full Version : I recieved an infraction for 'trolling a board member' on another forum!

In the many years of me being on the internet, I have never recieved an infraction!
SO, to sum it up, on another forum a member asked about swapping a latemodel bed on an early model truck. In the opening post, he posted a couple pics from a car show, including a close up of a womans rear that was walking around at the show. It was not a posed shot, that was obvious.
I replied, " I think it sucks, myelf."
The next post from another member was " Sucks, I lol'd at that pic"
A couple posts later a 'board member' quotes me and says " he didn't ask for your opinion, so move on"
This suprised me. On most forums, 'moved on' means banned. Why me and not the guy right after me?
So I replied,
"Wow, I have never been asked "to move on" on any forum.
I didn't realize it was such a serious forum, I mean heck, the op posted a voyuoristic image of a womans rear, who probably had no idea someone was taking a close up photo of it.
I simply stated my opinion, as others did, and I am asked "to move on"?
I think I'll go work on my truck."
This post was quickly deleted, and I recieved a pm from another 'board member' saying,
You have recieved and infraction.
Reason: Insulted Other Member(s)
-------
Trolling a staff member is not tolerated.
-------
This infraction is worth 2 point(s) and may result in restricted access until it expires. Serious infractions will never expire.
I have been on said forum for 5 years, been here longer, and on some other forums for nearly 10 years. Never, ever, have i recieved and 'infraction' on any board.
My question to them, was why was I asked to 'move on' but the guy who posted the same words as I in the next post was not. Perhaps because I only have 337 posts in my5 years, and the other poster has 9,120 in 3 years?

It is commonplace to have double standards in just about anyplace we go including forums and I am sure you know that. Forums have their favorites and it is my opinion that you can be shunned/black flagged/reprimanded for being "vocal". There is probably nothing you can do about it and my advice, for what its worth, is let it roll off your shoulder...(this is my opinion for what it is worth)

Any idea what the net result of having an "infraction" at that site is? Are you just in temporarily in detention or does it have an actual real effect?

Not sure other than I recieved "2 points" whatever that means.
Its not a big deal, I 'm not ready to fight over it or anything, it mostly just caught me off guard, and I wanted to share.
On the otherhand, I got some cool custom panels to allow speakers to be mounted behind the seat on Air Force 69 project truck, from a guy making them on said forum.
I'll post pics in my build tread when I get them!

Agreed. If the guy suggested myself and the next poster who said it's sucks as well to move on, j wouldn't have made a deal at all. But two post in a row, mind said I tink it ducks myself next guy say sucks, and only I am quoted and suggested to move on.
Very obvious double standard.

I got banned for life on one of the Mustang Police Car sites. The owners of this site HATE flippers. You know guys who buy and sell cars.
There were 4 different thread going at one time in which I was subject of much hate and ridicule in each thread because I buy and sell cars. I DID NOT POST AT ALL in any of the threads and STILL got banned because they don't like me because I am a FLIPPER!
By the way Flipper is a title I proudly wear!
It takes all types of weird people to make the internet fun that's why I fit in so well!

I do not want to post the site here.
That said, I discussed my issue with the other board member who sent the infraction, not the one that told me to move on. He was very understanding, and polite.

I can arrange it if you'd like.
Sounds like the OP's situation is one of miss communication with someone who was having a bad day and a forum that does not exercise quorum in dealing with "problem users". This is not to say that you are one of course. Here on PT.com the Mod's don't do anything of the sort unless there is consensus between at least 2-3 moderators on the action going forward. The reason for this is the humanity of the moderators. There are times when each of us might be "too close" to an issue and objectivity is compromised. Hence the practice of bringing in other mod's. It prevents me from going off 1/2-cocked on a member because he got under my skin.

Right. As True wrote, no moderating actions take place on PT.com unless the action has been reviewed with at least one other moderator, and usually several other moderators. In cases where we think quick action is needed, we'll lock a thread, consult with the others, take action if there is consensus, and unlock the thread. It helps keep the moderating on a more even keel.

Some of the forums, especially some of the more specialized ones, can be a real pain. I joined a local car forum, under my business name (as I do on every forum I frequent now), and posted in their new member section. Everything was great, until someone asked me to post a build thread they had seen elsewhere (probably here), and I complied. I had already expressed interest to the mods in advertising there, and though there were a few other automotive businesses that were sponsors, none were direct competitors. Within a few minutes of posting up all those pictures and text, the whole thing was deleted, and I was told that I had to a) become a sponsor (which I had already asked about, and fully intended to do), and b) change my screen name until that was done! I wasn't allowed to post under the existing screenname until my advertising request was approved. I could understand if I was soliciting business, or otherwise spamming the board, but someone who says up front they want to advertise? I told the moderator in question I thought that was ridiculous, and he responded that one of the other sponsors had complained. Fortunately, I was there long enough to see that the board wasn't going to be of much benefit to me or my business anyway, and haven't been back since.

I actually cherish any "infractions" I get on a forum. It proves they can read.
This isn't TGO is it??

Remember it's a group of individuals moderating & they are not all on the same page. If someone were to ask about becoming a sponsor here, I wouldn't know about it unless Larry were to post it in the Moderator section AND I happened to see it. Generally we only hear about businesses who actually become paid sponsors.

David,
I'm sure thats the case with most forums, but my point was I mentioned it in my introduction...that I wanted to become a sponsor. I had already put in my request for rates (which hadn't yet been answered), and was only trying to provide requested info on a swap. Its a far cry from what I see on many other forums, where there are longtime members who aren't sponsors, and are openly soliciting business rather than providing information to people who want to do it themselves. Anyway, don't want this to turn into a hijacking. Thanks!

Another point to consider is the staff size of a message board. We have quite a large number of Moderators and Admins, and we are spread pretty evenly across the four US time zones so "events" are usually attended to quickly and communication between the Mods is quick as well. Some message boards, regardless of size have relatively small staffs and there are some that are essentially one or two men shops. It's tougher to administrate like that and things sometimes slip through and threads spiral badly or as in the case above an Admin is not able to pass on information to a Mod in a timely manner.
Not making excuses for any of the above, just illustrating some of the differences between the way PT.com is run and the way some other boards operate.

I don't read the introductions here, or on Team Camaro where I'm a Mod. In my 10 years here I have only passed on 4 or 5 requests for rates to Larry that were wrongly addressed to me. I dont even know what the rates are here & have no authority to address that subject on behalf of the Forum. I read the sections I'm assigned to moderate & check in on the mod forum, if I have extra time, I check the general section & project updates. I would never assume one Moderator knows what's going on in all the forum sections, or that he knows what other moderators know. I'm just trying to counter the idea that all the mods know the same things or have the same exact take on what the rules are. We do better when we discuss problems in the Mod forum, but that doesn't happen if the Moderator thinks it's a clear cut rule violation that doesn't merit mod debate.
Sorry for getting off track. David

OP, I wouldn't sweat it. Years ago I was banned for life on e46fanatics for posting pics of my buddy's car with a kit I made, haven't been there since and don't miss that place. There is a douche mod Dave4GS on clublexus that has something personal against me ,banned me a few times for no reason, keeps deleting my posts, because of him I rarely get on there.

Some people don't know how to run a forum. The right way to handle something like that would be to send each poster a PM asking them to let it go and delete the "offensive" posts.
One thing that helping to run forums in the past taught me over and over, people will piss and moan about ANYTHING no matter how insignificant it actually is in the real world or any other place that actual adults circulate.

I speak my mind and I could care less about some E-nerd with a badge on a web forum.
That was hardly offensive and I smell tampon wearing Sally's to even make a stink about it.
I've met my fair share of E-geeks with admin power. We all know the type.

i get "points" on one forum i go to about every other week.. i've been suspended a few times, too..
usually it's for pointing out that someone is being an idiot- the Modsquad over there likes to have complete and total control and no one is to call anyone out publicly for anything.. ever.. and you are not to question any words of any of the Modsquad out in the public forum..ever.. even if you are publicly asking them about something they said that had nothing to do with their Modsquad duties.
and heaven forbid you make a stupid joke in a somewhat "serious" thread about some weird astronomical theory (it's an astronomy board) that only 5% of the people on that board even pretend to understand..
