When it was time to replace my 68 Camaro horns many years ago I went to the junkyard to find a cheap, fun replacement. A buddy told me Cadillac horns have a melodic, distinctive sound.

So I searched the junkyard for the biggest Caddy I could find, the Cadillac Fleetwood was the Cadillac of Cadillacs. So of course thats what I looked for. I found a perfect car, a huge old Fleetwood, and took all three horns, thats right it has a TRIPLE note horn! Sounded very cool until a few months ago when one of the triple note horns died.

So this weekend I was back in the junkyard and thought I'd get a new horn to replace the old Caddy horn. Again I was looking for the biggest Caddy I could find to pull to horn from. But I was disappointed to find that the newer caddy's have quadruple note horns!! And they were difficult to get at. I really didnt want to spend all day taking off the horns and I didnt want to have to find room for 4 horns in the front of the camaro.

So after giving up on Caddy's I walked over to the Euro section of the junkyard just for kicks and I saw a 1989 BMW 750iL, which is of course the Cadillac of BMW's. Someone had already taken the grille off the car...and there were the two BMW horns sitting right there in plain site, smaller, lighter, one bolt each, and super easy to get at. And they are only $5 at the junkyard. So I grabbed em.

I gotta say they sound awesome!! SUPER loud, piercing...and very Euro of course. You really can tell they are made for the autobahn, GET OUT OF MY WAY IM DOING 150MPH!! Anyway, just a suggestion for anyone wanting something different.

Of course the Caddy horns are still awesome if you want to go that route.

This is a sin! You should just paint your body panels different colors, buy an aftermarket ground effects kit and install some neon valve stem covers.

The horn from a Ford Taurus, the previous curvey-body style, also works well in a 1st-gen. It practically falls into the car mounting on the hood latch support near where the stock horns mount, and in the correct orientation so that they don't fill with water. Get the plug too since it is sealed.

I use to have a K5LA 5 mile freight horn on my peterbilt. Loved the sound it made.
It was really funny when you pass kids walking down the sidewalk and they would all do the honk the horn motion... LOL... didnt honk it until I got right beside them and then I would let r rip!! I would always see them on the ground laughing in my mirror as they got so scared they would fall down.

I have to agree with you Pete, those caddy horns are pretty loud! Kinda deep sounding :)

BMW horns, never thought of that, its a good idea.
I'm parting out my E39 540i as we speak so I'll definitely keep the horn/horns.

I purchased these http://www.google.com/products/catalog?rlz=1T4GGLL_enUS349US349&q=hella+horns&um=1&ie=UTF-8&tbm=shop&cid=4307121758609631378# on the Camaro but took them off because they are the worst sounding set of horns ever made. They sound like they belong on a pink Beetle. The Taurus horns sound great, fit better, have a sealed connector, and are less expensive. Best of all worlds.

I guess i grew to like them after putting two sets on a subaru and scaring the crap out of people with them. I like the " euro" dual tone note.

Maybe mine were defective because they did not sound good at all.

I had a set of air horns in my wifes truck, and thought I'd try a set of those Hella dual tone euro horns, and I thought it sounded like a really, really annoyed VW bug. It wasn't our style, so I got a train horn setup instead: http://www.hornblasters.com/products/details.php?i=shocker-228vx-train-horn-kit

A lot more complex of an installation, but instant gratification when the bonehead in front is gabbing on the phone and not paying attention. A very nice kit too. So now my wife's car now has 3 horns to chose from, a very happy wife.
Here's a forum thread of a setup with videos near the bottom on p.1
