What do you consider them? CArs or trucks?

That should have said Ranchero ;)

The state of Texas calls it a truck and taxes it accordingly....so if I'm paying to drive a truck, I guess I'll call it a truck.

My first ca....tru.....vehicle :D was a an ElCamino. I never have figured out what to call them. I tend to call them cars, though, because they have a car chassis, suspension, and interior. They just tend to be a car with a utility bed. I guess that's why the Aussies don't call them either one. They just call them a Ute(short for utility).

With all that said, I still voted "I don't know".

I never knew what to call them until one time I overheard a diesel truck guy get offended that someone dare call an El Camino a "truck"

...so now I call them trucks.

I've always considered them a car seeing that they are based off A and G body platforms..... meh I would love an a body camino though!

In California, My El Camino is considered a truck because it has a bed, thats the way the DMV looks at it,and I also have to pay a Commercial vehicle fee every time I renew my reg. So,its a truck!!!!!

Cruck??

If I removed my trunk lid would it be a truck? No....

Trucks have a removable bed... so to me they're cars..

I call it a car for many of the reasons stated above. For me though, it's a car because I don't use it to haul anything but azz!

Hey Tony,That also means the Chevy Avalanche isn't a truck....

Truck. As pointed out already, in CA, you get truck plates and the privilege of parking in loading zones!

I'd call it kinda light duty. I've put 3000 pounds of stone (marble mostly) in the bed when I was remodeling my house. Worked just fine, sure did steer easy on the way home tho....

I have always laughed at the arguement, they tend not to be very good cars or very good trucks in the sense of what they did from the factory.

Now when you start to modify them you can take them to either status and make them purpose built. YelCamino is a car, any of them with a camper shell or camper on them is a truck.

If you never use them as a truck it's a car, if you never use it as a car it's a truck. Either way it is about as useful as a Corvette for hauling people and as useless as a truck for hauling large amounts of plywood and other large building supplies. They just meet both uses halfway. Which makes it nicer for when you don't want to take the whole family or carry all that crap to a job. That's probably why they sell so many to guys who are the Boss.

I remember the arguement that if you put passenger plates on them you couldn't haul much in them and if you put truck plates on them you could haul anything that fit.

Mostly they never did either uses very well without modifications.

Either way it is about as useful as a Corvette for hauling people

In most cases, that's true, but I can verify that I once hauled 7 people in the front of my 83. It was a tight fit, but we managed. :hmm:

Hey Tony,That also means the Chevy Avalanche isn't a truck....

If you look at suspension, its a truck... the El Camino has the A/G-body car suspension..

Not for nothing but here in MO they're tagged as a car too.

i wish Cali would recognize it as a car, that commercial and weight fee is killing me.

If you look at suspension, its a truck... the El Camino has the A/G-body car suspension..

if you look at suspension its accually an SUV, GM trucks have leaf springs suvs have coil spring rears

I voted truck because it has an open bed, still cooler than an s10

I'm suprised, I figured more people here would call them cars.

Slick68
09-16-2011, 08:02 AM
I'm kinda surprised at that myself. I figured this poll would be a bit lopsided in the car faction.

Here in Mass.they're registered as trucks, the title says truck. I've had two of them through the years and if Chevy still made them I'd still have one!

I'm sure his feelings were hurt getting passed by a damn truck. That is Steilow driving during the 2010 UTCC at VIR. It was the easiest action shot I could pull up in hurry. My photo files have been disorganized since my system died back in May. Takes me for ever to find and retrieve a pic.
See you guys on Thursday.
