I am finishing up a frame off restoration with an LS2/4L70E install. Everything on the car has been replaced or refurbished except. This thread will provide a detailed account of my LS install complete with parts list (part numbers included) and pics. The goal for this swap is to get the stock motor/trans installed and running ASAP. I would like to do a cam/head swap now, but performance mods will come later, because as we all know these cars are never done and I would like to drive it for a while.

My decision for the LS conversion was bittersweet. On my previous motor, 355 SBC, I installed a very mild cam, was able to turn the motor over easily by hand, only later to learn how important it is to actually check piston to valve clearance. Once I determined the motor was toast, cracked block, trashed head and piston I started researching my options on pro-touring and ls1tech. I quickly came to the conclusion I wanted to do an LS conversion, even though I have no experience working on LS motors.

As I started looking for a motor, I fortunate enough to find daytonayellaz (Travis), who spent hours on the phone answering my LS conversion questions and providing invaluable insight/recommendations. I also had many pm's with Magntik (Jeremy), who bought the same setup from Travis, who answered additional questions and in the end I purchased a LS2/4L70E out of a 2008 TBSS from Travis.

As for the engine, the longblock had been replaced under factory warranty and has less than 900 miles!! The rest of the of engine components and trans have around 18K miles. Needless to say the motor extremely clean! I would highly recommend contacting Travis if your looking for an LS engine! He is a great guy, who I would now call a friend, and continues to answer question I have and has even called me a few times to see how things are going.

I don't recall you saying it had 900 miles on it! And you painted it? There can't be enough miles on it for the inside to get dirty, let alone the outside!! LOL

Just kidding, glad to be able to answer some questions rather than just asking them.
Good luck and let me know if I can be of any more help.

I agree! I already have good feeling about this swap. The motors are relatively easy to work on and I really like the reusable intake, water pump and valver cover gaskets.

Nice RocketRod! Looking forward to seeing your progress! Engine looks nice! Car looks nice too! Need more pics and info on it. :)

I purchased the car in August 2004 as a driver. The previous owner had done a frame off installing new GM quarters and applied a very nice paint job. The rest of the car was functional, but woefully out of date with drum brakes, turbo 350, stock suspension and weld superlites. Over the past seven years I have made the following improvements.

Removed subframe and had frame, inner fender, rad support, headlight brackets, etc powdercoated.
Smoothed firewall using Mikes Custom Cars firewall panel and replaced dash
Sandblasted undercarriage and applied por-15
Installed 12 bolt posi trac rearend with 3.73
Installed Baer disc brakes, 13" up front a 12" out back with new stainless brake lines
17" Budniks Cobalts with 275s in the rear and 235 up front
Installed Hydratech hydraboost
Hotchkis front sway bar with Bilstien shocks on all four corners with Global West UCAs
Installed Global West subframe connectors and solid body bushings
Installed Vintage Air Gen IV A/C
Installed AAW Classic Update wiring harness
Added Marquez Design tail lights, running lights, side marker bezels,
DSE Billet hood hinges, hood striker, wiper motor, headlights and battery mount
DSE dash insert with Autometer Ultra Lite electrical gauges
Lined interior with Damplier Pro, Luxury liner Pro and Firewall
New front and rear bumpers

Great start. The paint looks nice and it is refreshing to see a vinyl top car from time to time. Yours looks right with the top.

I got some time to work on the car this weekend and decided to clean and paint the motor, trans and accessories. After taking tons of pics I removed the harness, accessories, intake etc.

To clean the motor I used a degreaser called Super Clean, then wiped everything down with lacquer thinner. I taped everything off, applied two light coats of SEM Self etching Primer (rattle can), then topcoated with 2-3 coats Shop-Line series single stage paint. The color was poly silver with a light metallic. I am pretty pleased with the results! Total cost
of the degreaser, primer, reducer, hardener and 1 qt of paint was about $80.

I still need to install the Mast Motorpsports oil pan, get new motor mounts and transmission dipstick before I can install the engine.

Pics of motor with self etching primer applied at about 1am.

Time for another update. Parts have been arriving like crazy lately. I still need to get a fuel tank, fuel line, wiring harness, unlock/reflash ecm, mod driveshaft, power steering lines hoses and resvoir and a "few" miscellaneous parts....Here is what has arived so far. Total damage $2,797.04.

I have arranged the list with item description, cost, part number.

Stainless Works headers, $749.00, CALS1SB
Percy's Split Lock Friction Lock Header Bolts, $63.21, 21008
Mast Motorsports oil pan, $450.00, 401-111
Street & Performance 4l60e tranny crossmember, $175.95, n/a
Street & Performance Engine adapter brackets, $109.00, n/a
LS2 intake with TB, injectors and rails, $293.00, private
Kwik Bracket - Truck/2010 Camaro LSx Alternator and PS pump bracket,$284.50, K10168
Kwik Bracket - Truck/2010 Camaro LSx AC bracket kit, $190.50, K10163
A/C compressor, $230.00, 10206-01 (order from Kwik Perf)
GM LS2 Corvette Engine covers, $77.005,
GM LS2 Dipstick, $16.25, 12570788
GM LS2 Dipstick tube, $14.25, 12570787
GM LS2 Tranmission dipstick indicator, $12.85, 92057977
GM LS2 Tranmission dipstick tube, $39.55, 92159815
MSD 8.5mm Super Conductor Spark Plug Wire Set, $75.75, 32823
Transmission filter, $16.23, TF351

Now that I have the engine painted and all these parts it's time to get to work!

First order of busines was to install S&P adapter plates and stock motor mounts. In order to use the stock mounts you need to slowly grind away the hump on the back of the mount so they sit fluch on the adapter plate.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/IMG_1158-2.jpg

Next I removed the enormous TBSS oil pan and oil pump pickup tube.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/IMG_1178-1.jpg

The TBSS oil dipstick tub was located in the side of the oilpan. I needed to install an LS2 dipstick tube in the block so I needed to remove the small plug from the block. I just used a small punch & hammer and from the bottom of the block tapped it out.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/IMG_1182-1.jpg

Next I installed the Mast Motorsports oil pan and oil pump pickup tube per the instructions. The Mast pan is a pretty nice piece. Here is a pic of the motor already to install.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/IMG_1183-1.jpg

I still need to do some wiring work and general cleanup, but I wanted to test fit the engine now so I could check trans tunnel clearance, header fitment, ensure motor mounts work and there are no other surprises later. So with the help of my father we decided to put her in!!!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/IMG_1186-1.jpg

As luck would have it I had a couple minor issues getting the motor in. For starters, the motor mounts would not line up with the engine stands. I could get on bolt in, but the other was about 1/2" off. I ended up removing the mount and elongate all the holes on each mount. It took a couple times, but finally I got it in. Still a long ways to go, but I like what I am seeing.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/IMG_1191-1.jpg

Next came the Stainless Works headers. These are really nice pieces and I would highly recommend them!! Of course the motor had to come out because they would not go in from under the car. Once they were the the #1 header tube ever so slightly touch the bolt on my gearbox as shown in the pic below. I will mark the header and lightly dimple the tube and grind away a little of the bolt head.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/IMG_1238_dtl-1.jpg

Next is installing the new LS2 intake. Actually this was day prior to installing the engine. Anyways I heard there may be clearance issues using a car intake with the TBSS TB and there is but on the 2008 models the it can be done if you grind away a small protion of the water pump housing.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/IMG_1151_dtl-1.jpg

The next pic shows the TB installed and a very small gap and at the moment I am feeling victorious, but its a short lived victory. I want to use LS2 Corvette engine covers and contact the TB and would require more triming that I car for....so I will be installing a Corvette TB to mitigate this issue.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/09/IMG_1152-1.jpg

Here are a few more shots with everything mocked up. I don't know if I am going to stick with the Kwik brackets. It's a nice piece, but I am thinking about going with a Corvette setup, but we will see. If I keep it I will probably have to install a 2010 Camaro water pump as it may be difficult to find an upper radiator hose that makes and immediate 90 degree bend off the TBSS water pump.

The conversion is actually coming together a lot faster than I anticipated and not nearly as difficult as some make it sound. I am very pleased so far...here are a few pics.

Well due to work I haven't gotten anything done to the car in the last two weeks.....anyways I did find a few moments to start checking clearances and laying out the wiring and other things that need to be done. I should also be receiving my gas tank this week and the wiring harness soon!!

I did find a header clearance issue. As the pic shows the #2 header tube has about 1/8" clearance on AN connector on the gearbox. I can dimple the area a little, but personally I don't think it will be enough. I may put a heat shield over it and run a power steering cooler. Anyone have any thoughts on this?

Thanks! Your car is one that got me inspired to do this conversion....and the fact that my old motor ate an intake valve and destoyed itself...

Oh man! You're gonna love that tank and fuel system! It really is a nice piece of workmanship, both the tank, and the pump/controller system. Carl did a fantastic job! Can you guys please elaborate on what you are seeing on the gauge? Fuel level, needle movements, etc. It will help me to better understand what's happening.

Another option for those with a 5th-Gen Camaro module is to use the GM 33-240 ohm clip on sensor. Another option is to modify a stock sensor. The mod's are laid out here in Step 37 http://www.vaporworx.com/Vaporworx%20Fuel%20Tray,%20Mounting%20Ring,%20Corn er%20Pickups,%20and%20Wiring%20Instructions.pdf

If you have a CTS-V pump there is a clip-on sensor as well but the wiring does not pass through the module hat like it does on the 5th-Gen. For that another bulkhead is needed. See here https://www.pro-touring.com/showthread.php?77612-You-asked-for-you-got-it.-Three-new-VaporWorx-products.&highlight=barrier In the last photo in the first post there is a description of what it is in the paragraph above the photo. Seach for "barrier".

Check the very first post here about how to modify SW header tube for steering box clearance. https://www.pro-touring.com/showthread.php?42290-Why-the-Camaro-is-in-a-coma.....&highlight=coma

I was thinking about doing a high temp sleeve also as I dont want to dimple the headers that much. I also called Stainless Works today and they said these are one of there most popular headers and until this year they never had any complaints, but have gotten 5 or 6 recently. They took my name and number.

Well I am still not finding any significant amount of time to work on the car and with winter fast approaching or any chance of working on the car will stop due to the temperature. I decided to install a Mr. Heater 45,000 btu garage heater. It will run off natural gas, tied into the house line, and controlled via thermostat. Of course this little project requires me to paint a section of the garage first. I will finishing painting the rest of the garage over the winter (hopefully).

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/IMG_1557-1.jpg

Just painting a small section where the heater will be installed. I have 10' ceilings and plan to paint the ceiling and upper portion of the wall white, the bottom portion grey and then put a red stripe separating the colors.

Well after years off working off the garage floor, boxes, etc my neighbor and I got together and built some very simple workbenches. We used these instructions, http://www.eaa1000.av.org/technicl/worktabl/tablefig.htm, as a based and modified them slightly. I made the base 6' wide and added an 8' long 1.5" thick top. As you can see from the picture I could already use more space!

Found some free time to install the gas tank. Prior to installing I have heard from quite a few people that there are issues with the fuel level sending units in these tanks. So to avoid the frustration I replaced it with a 5th gen Camaro in tank fuel level sensor. I bought this and the 5th gen Camaro tank harness from CarlC for $124 shipped.

The new fuel level sensor required a new fuel level gauge, since the signal is not your standard 0-90 ohm, but rather 0-280 ohm. I purchased an Autometer Ultra-lite gauge (p/n 4310) from Summit Racing for $118.

The only thing left is to run my fuel line and and I need to figure out a vent system for the tank. I would like to run a charcoal cansister setup, but that may prove difficult given the how close the vent is to the trunk pan.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/01/IMG_2104-1.jpg

tank installed....I didn't weigh it, but the stainless tanks weigh a ton compared to a stock tank!

Time for another update. I finally decided to go with the GMPP Corvette accessory drive setup using a 2009-2012 Corvette water pump, which places the upper radiator hose on the driver side. This makes it a little easier to re-use my old radiator setup versus buying a new one.

p/n 19155067 GMPP Corvette Accessory Drive w/ A/C
p/n 251728 AC Delco Water pump with upper radiator hose outlet on driver side
p/n 12635649 GM Harmonic Balancer
p/n 12557840 Balancer bolt

Last night I got around to painting the accessory drive setup and water pump. It went pretty good considering my detail gun wouldn't work and I had to spray everything with the larger spray gun. There were a couple minor runs, but overall I am very happy with the end results. Unfortunately the pics aren't that good.

After sanding everything with 80 and 180 grits sanding paper, then cleaned I applied a couple light coats of SEM Etching primer to all the pieces

Well after mocking up my corvette accessory drive I had a clearance issue trying to adapt the factory power steering pump fitting to -6AN using a Russells 16mm male to -6an adapter. In the end, I found a custom fitting made by Detroit Speed Eng. p/n 090401. This fitting replaces the factory outlet fitting in the pump with a custom fitting that is converted to a -6AN. It cost $18 plus $11 S&H (ouch)
http://www.detroitspeed.com/1967-1969%20Camaro-Firebird-Products/090401-psp-otlt-fttng.html

Here is a side by side comparison. The DSE fitting on the right is a good 1/4" shorter. Be careful when you remove the factory fitting as there is a spring and plastic cup that you don't want to lose.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/02/IMG_2144-1.jpg

Here is a pic with a 90 degree -6AN fitting installed. There is not a ton of clearance, but it will work without removing the pulley to get the hose off.

Really like how the engine bay turned out. I have got a question regarding the radiator core support removal. Did you have to support the fenders by any means like adjustable stands prior to removing the core support in order to prevent the fenders from sagging?

Thanks! Okay prior to starting the LS conversion the entire front end had been previously installed and aligned. I haven't had any sagging issues when removing the radiator core support, but obviously I don't put any undue stress on them since they aren't properly supported. I chose to remove the grill, radiator support, etc since I end up working by myself most of the time makes it easier to remove/install the engine and I am unable to remove/install a hood by myself.

I got a little time to work on the car this weekend. No progress pics, but I drew up my electrical schematic and got my dbw pedal mounted. I still need weld in some gussets and paint it, but the hard part is done. Now I just need to mount the ECM/TCM and decide which fuse/relay panel I want and order some wire. I also need to figure out what to do about the clearance issue on the high pressure power steering hose. once I get these issues resolved the motor goes in!!

Well I had to work this weekend, but I found a little time to work on the car. Nothing major, but I did make a couple brackets to mount my transmission cooler. I am also putting the finishing touches on the mounting bracket for the gas pedal.

To mount the cooler I had an extra set of MSD vibration mounts laying around so I secured them to the a/c condenser, then made a couple small brackets out of 16 gauge sheet metal and fastened everything together with stainless bolts & nuts. Nothing fancy, but is functional. Here are a few pics of the transmission cooler mounted.

Well I made a little progress this weekend. I just about finished my gas pedal mount. The wire feed on my welder was acting up so don't ask for any closeup of the welding job as it isn't very pretty.

I also spent a little time cleaning up the engine bay wiring, pretty much finalized which fuseblock and I going to build and how it will be installed. The highlight of the day though was teaching my son how to properly crimp and solder wire. He/we did several butt splices. Everything turned out well and he seemed to be enjoying himself.

I made a little headway. Last Friday I recieved a new redeisgned driverside header from Stainless Works. Multiple people had expressed concerns about clearance issues ans Stainless Works stepped up and corrected the problem. All I had to do was box up the header and return it, Stainless Works paid for shipping. To say the least I am extremely impressed with there customer service!

Here us a pic of the original header had about 1/16 inch clearance bettween the #3 tube and the high pressure line and the #1 tube lightly touched the gearbox.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/IMG_1247dtl-1.jpg

Here is the new header the #1 tube clears the grearbox and the #3 tube has a little over a 1/4" clearance. The only downside is with the #1 tube location there is not enough room to remove one of the UCA nuts. No biggie as I will be installing new UCAs soon, ordered them today, and will be installing a shorter bolt then.

Nothing special...just a pic of the installed motor. It sure does look a lot nicer installed than sitting on the garage floor. Now the fun begins!!!

Well I finally pulled the trigger on front suspension upgrades. With the addition of the LS motor I removed 100sh plus pounds off the nose of the car and I need to get the front end back down. So earlier in the week I ordered SC&C Stage 2 UCAs (http://scandc.com/new/node/44), SPC LCAs (http://scandc.com/new/node/81), Helwig swaybar (http://scandc.com/new/node/256) and SPC ride height shimpack (http://scandc.com/new/node/672). For now, I will re-use my Hotchkis coils springs and Bilstien shocks. Depending on how much I drive it I may upgrade the rear suspension to a g-link with coil-overs later in the year, but for now this will suffice. The parts should be here in about 2 weeks!!!

What did it take to get the replacement header from Stainless works? I called them about this issue and asked about an "upgraded" header a week or two ago and they claimed to know nothing about it or any interference issues? Do you have a contact over there you dealt with directly? I still have mine new in the box awaitng install so now would be the time to get a replacement if possible....

I bought my headers through Frank at Prodigy Customs. I worked with Frank to get the process started and then directly with Jason at Stainless Works. Let them know the headers are new in the box.

The UPS truck dropped off a package from Waytek. Now I have all the items and tools to create my fusepanel. I will be using a Cooper Bussman RTMR Panel 15303-6-2-4 (http://order.waytekwire.com/productdetail2/M50/46346/MINI%20FUSE%20AND%20MICRO%20RELAY%20RTMR/). This panel allows you to us up to 5 micro relays, ISO 280 footprint, and 10 mini-blade fuses. I also ordered a power relay module, an assortment of metri-pack 150 & 280 connectors, terminals & cable seals with the appropriate delphi crimpers. This should keep me busy for a bit/

Making more progress. I test fit my harness and after making some minor adjustment the to the harness routing I wrap any part of the harness that is touching or close to a heat source with DEI Cool tape. I bought a 30ft x 1 3/8" wide roll for $30 and have a decent amount left over. It's pretty easy to work with, but at $1 per foot use it wisely. Now I just need to connect everything and secure the harness....then on to the next item on the list.

On another note, I got my harness from SSP wiring and opted for the show car harness wrap. It is black mesh sheathing that encapsulates the entire harness. It looks great, but In hindsight I wish I would have not gotten this. It snags on everything when you install it and you can not access the wire harness if needed. Hopefully I won't have any issues..

Got a ton of stuff done yesterday and things are moving along nicely!. The plan for today is:

Loosely install the radiator support and makes mounts for the ecm, tcm & fuse panel. Then the wiring can begin.
Measure driveshaft length. Will look into getting the stock unit shortened, or a I may just bite the bullet and order a new one.
Tap water pump heater hose inlet/outlet for AN to NPT adapters
Install front carpet
Continue working on an idea for low mount a/c that doesn't require notching the sub frame.
Order more parts: stover nuts, wire, ls3 coolant crossover tube, etc

For starters I ordered a cold air intake kit. After looking at everything I decided to go with the Spectre Muscle Car LS Conversion Intake Kits, Spectre Muscle Car LS Conversion Intake Kits p/n 900239K (http://www.jegs.com/i/Spectre/865/900239K/10002/-1) . I was all excited then I opened the box and this is all I got. Yep, all they sent was the bracket and it was apparent the item had been previously installed??? There were no intake tubes, mounting hardware, filter, couplers, etc. Anyways the bracket doesn't fit my car as I have an over sized radiator so it's going. Its a shame because it seemed like it would have been a nice setup for the $$$. Looks like I may go with an Airaid U-Build it setup, but they are expensive. If anyone has any suggestions let me know.

Due to clearance issues I converted the water pump heater hose inlet/outlet over to accept AN fittings. After removing the pressed on fitting I tapped each hole. The smaller one is a 3/8" NPT and the larger 1/2" NPT. The larger hole would have tapped a lot easier if I drilled it out to the proper size. Once the hoses were tapped I installed the appropriate size npt to -10an male fittings in the pump. On the heater hoses I am straight -10 socketless hose ends with Gate Power Grip clamps. Here is a pic without the Gates Power Grip clamps installed.

Hey Rocketrod,
I have been following along with your build and I am pretty much on the same path that you are. I recently ordered the same Spectre system but my part number was 900234K which is for the filter on the drivers side. I had just missed the last kit they had when I ordered so it actually took me a month to wait on another kit. If you received that closeout panel with the rubber gasketing already attached then yes it probably had already been used. Those pieces came in different bags in mine. I worked on trying to get mine to fit last weekend. I have about three or four areas that are not working out and I was going to send pictures to Spectre to see what they say. I don't have my hood on the car right now but I am pretty sure that panel needs to be tweaked in order for the fender braces to fully pass through. At least that is what I found on mine. Plus I couldn't get the main pipe to line up with the through hole in the panel. It uses a rubber boot to make the bend but there was no way I could get it to work. In the end the kit can still work without using that heat shield panel if you use one of their braces. I will let you know what I find out when I send them some of the pictures of mine. Sorry about your kit. If I am able to get this to work I still think this is a good kit and probably priced lower than the other options out there.

Getting ready to install the trans dipstick and tube. I am comparing the original TBSS tube/indicator to the new LS2 tube/indicator (GM # 92159815 out of 2006 Pontiac GTO) and noticed there is a big difference in how far the indicator protrudes into the pan. The black tube is out of the TBSS and the other is the new tube. The low/full indicator markings protrude a lot deeper into the pan than the new one (see pic below). Anyone have any thoughts on this?

I think I am just going to use the new indicator and cut down the TBSS tube until the low/full marks stick match the TBSS.

Not the best pic, the black tube is the TBSS, the other one is the new GM tube

I have a feeling my only options will be buy a different pan, or install a drain plug in the stock pan. I did find another pan by PML, http://www.yourcovers.com/transpan_9427.php that will work for the 4l70e, however I am leaning toward installing the drain plug and sensor in my pan.
Well I gave up on buying a deep aftermarket trans pan. The PML will fit a 4l70e, but it is so deep it would hang down below my sub frame. Anyways I opted to install a B&M Drain plug kit, 80250 (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-80250/).

I spent the rest of the morning securing the radiator, installing the lower radiator hose, installing the an fittings in the water pump, bolting in the trans cross member and taking care of a zillion other things that need to be done. The list is getting shorter.

Well I have been putting this off for a while, but it is now time to finish the harness install. This will be split into two stages. Tthe first will be building a harness to run the required wires into the interior. This will include wires for speedo, tach, ODB II port, check engine light, fuel pump relay trigger, etc. The second stage will be building a custom fuse fuse panel for the all the relays (headlights and fans) and other engine circuits (maf, coilpacks, ecm, tcm, etc).

So here is what the rats nest I created previously....it should look much nicer and be easier to work on when I am done.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/06/IMG_2930-1.jpg

To connect the engine harness to the interior harness I will be using two 8 pin metri-pack 280 series connectors. In hindsight, I should have ordered 10 pin connectors, because I can't fit everything in one 8 pin connector.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/06/IMG_2934-1.jpg

First step is to label wires, determine wire routing, cut wire to length and install the cable seals
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/06/IMG_2936-1.jpg

Crimping terminals ends and cable seals. The proper crimpers make this job a breeze.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/06/IMG_2940-1.jpg

Everything is crimped and soldered. Now I just need to insert the pins into the connector bodies.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/06/IMG_2944-1.jpg

Job completed! I installed a male and female connector to eliminate the chance of hooking up the wrong connectors. Of course this may not stop me from connecting them to each other, but nothing will work, which should reduce the troubleshooting time. The next step is to build a harness to run the wires into the interior....

Rod,

She runs SWEEEETTT!!! Still working out the bugs with the NewVintage gauges (still no speedo and tach). Mark @ NewVintage has been great! Just need some "downtime" to pull the dash (again...)

I highly recommend a good tune! These LS2 motors have a slight issue with "backfiring" when coming off a hard load (DFCO?) with long tube headers and no cats. Not doing any damage, just keeps throwing codes... I do love going to the Chevy dealer or Auto Zone (somewhere with an OBDII reader) and ask them to clear the codes... it really shocks the crap out of them to see an LS under the hood..:smoke:

Also, make sure you are pushing your fuel pressure up! Being used to carburated motors, mine was set too low and was causing the computer to throw lean codes... again, fixed once Mike Morris (super tuner!) worked his magic.

Well it cooled of enough here so I worked on the car most of the day. I am just about finished building/wiring my fuse panel. Currently there is a loose wire by the ecm connectors that is connected to the L terminal of the alternator plug. I also have a blue wire going to the F terminal. This is for a 2005 Corvette alternator.

I am pretty sure this is the exciter wire, which I believe requires a 12 volt "key on" source. I emailed SSP Wiring who built the harness and asked them about this last unlabeled wire......in fact they didn't label any of the wires, about 20 altogether, like they said they would.

I also had to order some additional terminal ends and I will need to mod the fuse panel bracket to provide some additional clearance for installing the fuse panel.

I have had this car since Aug 2004 and I hate to say it, but I have put very few miles on it as it has been in pieces most of the time I have owned it. Yes I know Mac's. I go down to his new shop once or twice a year when I am looking for some hard to find part. He is a a great guy and super knowledgable when it comes to Camaros.

Got to spend some quality time with my son this weekend while working on the Camaro. We picked up 20ft Fragola -6 black nylon race hose and a bunch of an fittings. We created and installed the fuel and transmission cooler lines. He was having fun using the cutoff wheel and installing the fittings.

After that we installed the heater control valve and heater hoses. I used AN fitting on the water pump and Gate Powergrip clamps to secure the heater hoses. The Powergrip clamps really make for a clean install (I'll post pics later).

I also spent some time finishing up the fuseblock installation. I still need to wrap everything in wire loom and secure the harness. After that install the fuel gauge, grounds, fuel pump & remote starter relays and the wiring is done.

I am getting close to firing this thing up! Then it will be time to start on the interior, but that's more of a winter project.

I got a lot of stuff done on the car this weekend. I finished ALL of the wiring except installing the torque converter lockout relay and an engine to body ground. I just placed an order for some fittings for the steam vent and engine oil priming setup. If all goes well next weekend the car will be running. Still lots to do before I can drive it, but it should be running!!

I am in the home stretch now. Before I fire it up I need to install the intake, CAI, plugs, wires, prime engine oil pump, bleed brakes, install PCV catch can and add: oil, trans fluid & coolant.

I am having a heck of a time finding a location to mount the Mike Norris PCV catch can. The thing is enormous. Anyone have any suggestions as to where I should, or shouldn't mount it?

It's a mess, but here is a pic of the engine.

Good news! Early last week my neighbor, 95 Z/28 LT1, and I finally fired up the LS2! THe motor sounds incredible! Everything went well and the motor isn't giving off any OBDII codes. However, the tachometer is dead. I need to look into why. It's getting power, the tach signal wire hooked up and I have it set it to 4 cylinder mode.

I will post a start up video later! 95 Z/28 LT1 has been a big help as he stopped over several times last week to help install the hood, bleed the brakes, etc. In order to drive it I need to align the front end, install the seats and do some safety checks as the car has been apart for almost 6 years.

Not much time for the car this weekend, but I did get the front end aligned, started cutting the carpet and added a pull up resistor to the tach signal and it is registering now. Of course I do have a few other issues.

Alternator output is 11.6V - New corvette alternator, all wiring is new and secure plus I have a 470 ohm resistor inline on the red wire going to the alt plug. I have plenty of grounds also, 2 2/0 cable going from the engine to the body. Anyone have any suggestions.
Lower radiator hose started leak - After 10-15 minutes of idling the lower radiator hose started dripping at both hose ends. When looking at the hose it looked like it was bulging since the thermostat hadn't open. This is the first time I have had any leaks. TO stop this should I drill a couple of 1/16" or 1?8" bypass hole in the thermostat to relieve pressure?
Tachometer reading fluttering below 1,000 rpms. - I add a pull up resistor to boost the tach signal, but when engine rpm goes under a 1,000, the tach need is not steady (flutters). For the pulll up resistor circuit I used ignition power to a 4.7K ohm resistor tied into the tach signal. Anyone have any suggestions.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Been busy taking care of miscellaneous item, but I should have the seats installed later today, then install the front bumper and I can take the car out for a spin!!!!

Here is an update on a few other issues.

...

Anyone have any suggestions.

...
Just an update. I called Auto Meter and they said the rpm fluttering at idle is normal and can't be corrected without side effects. I could send it in and have them rework the tack to dampen the signal at low rpms, but then the tach reading is real slow to respond.

They also recommended I tie a +5v with a 10K ohm resistor in series to my tach signal. I am currently using a +12v (ign power) with a 4.7K ohm resistor, and while it works they preferred I tie a +12v line into a +5v circuit. I just need to find a place to tap into +5v on the harness.

...

Lower radiator hose started leak - After 10-15 minutes of idling the lower radiator hose started dripping at both hose ends. When looking at the hose it looked like it was bulging since the thermostat hadn't open. This is the first time I have had any leaks.
...
The annoying leak has stopped for now, but I am sure it will be back. For now I am going to keep an eye on it and drive it.

I took to car out for a test spin today. I had issues with the brakes not releasing, a small drip at the master cylinder and of course the leaking lower radiator hose.

I snugged the brake line fittings to stop the master cylinder leak, then adjusted the master cylinder pushrod so the brakes release properly. No luck with the leaking lower radiator hose and now I have no brake lines. The brake switch has voltage and is working as it should. I just ran out of time, but I will get it working soon.

I also took a short video and some pics, which I'll post later.

2.5" Stainless Steel V-band clamps p/n SUM-694250 (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/sum-694250) and had and extra bung welded in each pipe. The Magnaflow's sounds so much nicer than the Flowmaster 40s when cruising, but have a really nice sound when you get on it. Here are a few pics.

I haven't been posting much lately, but a lot has been going on with the car. For starters I bought HP Tuners Pro and a PLX Wideband/Air Fuel Gauge (http://www.jegs.com/i/PLX+Devices/687/SMAFRDM6/10002/-1) Previously I had a friend look at the tune put on my car by SSP Wiring and it is just horrid. We spent a few hours yesterday adjusting the tables (timing and fuel). There is still quite a bit that needs to be finalized on the tune, but the car just screams now!

I also pulled the trigger on an early Christmas present. I bought a Ridetech Level 2 Coilover front and rear suspension (http://www.ridetech.com/store/1967-1969-chevy-camaro-coilover-system-level-2.html) with the Front Musclebar (http://www.ridetech.com/store/1967-1969-chevy-camaro-firebird-musclebar-front.html). I also opted for the Tru Turn package (http://www.ridetech.com/store/tru-turn-complete-package-67-69-gm-f-body.html), which will allow me to run up to 275s on the front.

Hi, I'm new to the board and am in the process of accumulating parts and info. When I read your first paragraph, it really piqued my interest because I had hopes that by now installing an LS into an f-body would be pretty refined. But six pages and a year later you're still stomping out bugs. Don't get me wrong, you have an incredible build going and I am jealous of your skills, but now I'm pretty intimidated about going forward. Looking back at what you've learned, is there an easier way to go about this? What would you do differently if you were to start over again?

Looking back at what you've learned, is there an easier way to go about this? What would you do differently if you were to start over again?Do not be intimidated about doing an LS swap. One of the main reasons I have taken so long is procrastination. There were many times during the swap I went 2-3 weeks without doing anything. I also spent a lot of time making stuff look neat. It is very time consuming re-routing and hiding wires. I also ran into a snag having SSP Wiring do my harness and program my ECM. They told me it would be 3 weeks and it ended up taking more like three months and they didn't provide what they said they would.

If I were to do it all over again the only things I would have done differently are:

I would never use SSP Wiring again. The harness works, but the tune they put on my ecm is just horrid and they refuse to answer emails once I got the harness.
I would have worked more steadily on the project. The 2-3 week breaks really slowed down progress.
I kind of wished I would have installed an LS3

I installed the Holley bracket with a SD7 A/C compressor this weekend. The install was pretty straight forward and Holley's instructions were spot on! It was refreshing to actually have instructions that matched reality.

I still need to still need to check the clearance of the water pump boss and serpentine belt after running the motor as it is pretty close (this was mentioned in Holley's instructions). I also need to find another location to mount the the PVC catch and trim the engine cover to fit. Overall I am very happy with the quality and looks of the bracket, but I did paint it before I installed it.

The only frustration was getting the correct belt. I ended up going to Auto Zone because they were the only ones locally that could look up the belt based on length, 6PKxxxx (where xxxx is the length of belt in millimeters) versus specific application. I ended up buying four different length belts.

I have installed the Kwik and Holley A/C bracket and personally the Holley bracket is a much easier install (fewer pieces), but I doubt you could go wrong with either.

Here is a list of the parts I used, bear in mind I was using a GM 19155067 Corvette accessory drive setup (http://paceperformance.com/i-6255430-19155067-gmpp-accessory-drive-system-with-a-c-fits-ls2-ls3-ls7-engines.html). All of the part number listed, except the belt, were obtained by cross referencing the part numbers listed in Holley's instructions.. I'll post more pics once I get te PVC, CAI and engine cover installed.

Holley 20-134 LS AC bracket, high mount passenger side (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-20-134)
Holley 21-1 LS Installation kit, basically an adapter to mount bracket to engine based on accessory backspacing (http://www.summitracing.com/parts/hly-21-1)
Dayco p/n 89337, main drive belt tensioner
Dayco p/n 89059, smooth idler pulley
Gates p/n 6PK2525, Serpentine belt

When I saw you post that you'd subscribed to my update thread I thought I'd look to see what I could find out about your car. I just read through this thread start to finish...you have a LOT more patience than I do. My car is all about function over all else. Yours is both functional and good looking. I am thoroughly impressed! My RideTech install will be a little less than yours as I didn't have the ability to buy the Muscle Bar yet (hopefully tax time!) but it should be pretty much identical otherwise. I'll be using an old no name sway bar I bought from a friend until I can afford the Muscle Bar.

In regard to that Holley bracket, I really like the looks of it over the Kwik bracket that came with my Vintage Air setup. The look is so much more consistent with the Corvette accessory bracket.

Overall you've done a really nice job and you definitely have something to be proud of!

I don't think the heim upgrade is listed as an option on the Stage II kit page but it is on the individual 4 Link page. I'm surprised Matt's didn't mention it though because the guy I talked with knew about it. Maybe you can work out a deal to swap the arms since they're brand new? After talking with Ridetech and the replies I got from a few threads I started on this topic I am not going to upgrade to the heim joints. While I do intend on autocrossing some, this is more of a street car and the suggestion was I spen the extra $$ money on better tires as the upgrade would have no noticeable affect on the track.

Looks great! I've had mine on the road for awhile too. I thought I'd let you know the links are really only noisy at low speeds. I've been driving mine back and forth to work the last week or so and I have gotten where I really don't notice the link noise but my wife does! I might end up buying some urethane bushed links to swap out when I'm not autocrossing the car just so my wife will enjoy riding in the car too!

Looks real nice! Refreshing to see someone running the SS hood for a change.

What's the next phase?

Nothing wrong with it, but I was in this never ending upgrade phase and I just wanted to drive the car this year and get the bugs worked out of it... How do you like the Ridetech setup?

Thanks. The only thing that I could possibly do to the car would be a rear suspension upgrade (4 link) and build the motor, but at the moment the bonestock LS2 is a lot of fun!

It's been quite a while since my last post and for the most part I have just been driving the Camaro, but to be honest I have gotten a little bored with it. Then back in April, after renting a C7 Corvette I was seriously thinking about selling the Camaro. I have had the car since 2004 and thought maybe it was time to move onto something new.

Then it happened. I came across a Magnuson TVS 2300 setup and LS3 heads off a 2010 Camaro for sale that sparked my interest. I have always wanted a TVS setup and after some negotiating, we agreed upon terms which included cash, my 243 heads and LS2 intake for his parts.

The engine mods will be split into two phases as I have to have the car running for my son & I to drive to the Holley LS Fest on Sept 11th. The event is a little over 4 weeks away and it is just not possible for me to comfortably install everything.

Here is the plan.

TVS 2300 running 8psi boost and producing somewhere in the low to mid 500rwhp. I'm looking for longevity here not a max effort build.
LS3 heads with PAC 1218 springs, new seals and Brian Tooley Racing trunion upgrade
LS9 cam
CSTV fuel module
4l80e transmission with TransGo kit and 3200-3600 stall
Caltrac bars and additional rear suspension work
Install battery disconnect, driveshaft loop and miscellaneous items
Install Holley EFI setup if I have any $$ left.

Phase 1 - Install LS9 cam, new oil pump, LS3 heads with new valve springs, seals & trunion upgrade, LS3 intake and update the tune. I have already ordered the parts and they should arrive in a few days!

Phase 2 - Install the TVS 2300, CSTV fuel module, 4l80e trans & stall converter, update accesory drive for Camaro spacing, install Caltrac bars and possibly convert over to a Holley EFI setup if the money tree isn't dead by then.

Here is the motor waiting for the new parts. I still need to remove the radiator, grill and finish cleaning the piston tops.

After a quick trip to St Louis to pickup the TVS 2300 and LS3 heads

The maggie after a little bit of cleaning

A quick pic of the C7 I rented. The car was an absolute blast to drive. I put over 400 miles on the car in one day and I consider myself very lucky to only get one speeding ticket.

I am wondering how your going to install the caltrac bars when you said you purchased a complete Level 2 Ridetech kit? Did you not install the Ridetech kit then?

Shortly after buying the Ridetech setup I got burnt out on spending $$$ on the car and sold the kit. The Caltracs are a cheap, easy and effective way to minimize the tractions issues I'll be up against.

I got the motor back together which was a struggle as just about everything that could go wrong did, but I am very happy with the end results. The majority of the parts were purchased through Texas Speed. Here is a rundown of the parts used.

LS3 Precision Race Components LS3/L92 CNC Cylinder Heads
Texas Speed LS3 Boost Camshaft: 227/235.639/.646 114LSA
GM LS9 head gaskets
ARP Head bolts
Brian Tooley Racing Trunion upgrade
7.40 Chromemoly pushrods
GM LS7 Lifters
Rollmaster LS3 Single Roller Timing Set
Melling high volume oil pump
Stock LS3 intake

My work hours during this upgrade were pretty hectic, but luckily a local shop, Herring Performance, was able to squeeze me in. I dropped the car off the day before I was leaving for Holley LS Fest. They did an amazing job tuning the motor. I don't have the dyno graph, but the final numbers were 435 rwhp and 437 rwtq! The car is extremely responsive and pulls pretty hard given I still have the stock torque converter and the throttle body I got is not ideal for my setup.

My son and I took the car to Holley LS Fest and the car ran extremely well. I got a couple 1/4 mile runs in and the car performed well. I'll post the timeslips later. There is a lot left in it once I get car sorted out and dialed in, but that will be my winter project.

I'll see what I can do about some idle clips, but currently the blower is still sitting on the workbench. I need to upgrade the trans, fuel system, etc before I put it on.
