OK guys, we promised and we deliver!
In February 2012 we will hold the first annual Run to the Alamo. Details are not nailed down, but mark your calendars if you live in the area or are interested in attending. We will do this event at Harris Hill, probably the weekend of Feb. 17-19, 2012. We plan something special for early arrivals and cruising the area will be part of the fun. Road course, Speed/Stop and Autocross on Saturday and Sunday.
If you plan to attend, please post here, now so we can get an idea on attendance.
We will also be having a regular car show that weekend, probably on Saturday so if you have contacts with area car clubs, please let me know. Other announcements about this event coming soon, stay tuned.

And to think I was about to post my attendance is based upon weather in N.Tx that time of year. We were all iced in that time this year. I'd hate to think what would keep Michagonians and Canadians from showing up.

Look forward to meeting you guys. I'll be in my 70 1/2 Hugger Orange/Bk. Striped Camaro I've had since 75 in high school with 487,000 miles on it.

Is there a real signup? Or do I just pipe up here? Are there classes? Is there a schedule for the weekend? Harris Hill's site is down, so there's no help there. We've got a 2011 Mustang GT we'd like to bring, but we are all worried about squeezing in this event among other racing and track events.

Glad to see that registration is open for this February event, but I have the same questions as the quote above - track day run schedule, classes, rules, tire limits, etc?

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/01/1159968157_mZpj2S-1.jpg https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/01/1159973500_Uk4ejS-1.jpg

Is this going to be a competition event in any way, or just for fun? Will any times be taken? I love the track at HHR and any excuse to go tearing around down there is always welcome, so I'll be there no matter the answers. :)

Curious,

Bill Howell
01-19-2012, 01:27 PM
Terry,
We will have brand new timing equipment we will be using for the first time at RTTA.
We don't have a schedule yet, that will depend on how many sign up in the next couple weeks. We still have plenty of spots open right now.
Rules are on www.americanstreetcarseries.com Tire TW is 200 but you can do fun runs if you have lower TW.
As all of our events, this is more about fun and learning about your limitations and your car. We are not SCCA, NASCAR or F1 so come, have a good time, knowing there will not be any scouting going on and no one will get a driving offer from Rick Hendrick...haha

Fair
01-25-2012, 02:59 PM
Thanks for the update - I'm signed up for the event, have hotel reserved, and we're getting the car ready. I read the rules (looks to be the same Optima Challenge uses) and I'm on the hunt for some 200 treadwear tires (I have four sets of 180 treadwear), but we'll scrounge something up.

Event Schedule Details: http://americanstreetcarseries.com/?page_id=207

Looks like Friday's and Saturday's activities are fleshed out, but "ASCS is currently trying to nail down the details for Sunday’s events." Is Sunday going to include the speed-stop and autocross event?

Last question - what are you using for timing/transponders our at Harris Hill - if anything? I talked to Phillip at HHR today and they have an "AMB loop in the track" but not the software/hardware box, since the various racing groups bring their own gear. There's plenty of time to round up something to use for timing, of course, just wanted to know if I need to bring my AMB transponder for my car. :)

Thanks,

hotwheels

I have a commitment on Sunday, so I can't do any racing, but it's only about 50 minutes away from Austin. I'll come down for Friday's festivities as well as on Saturday to watch and hang out and bench race. Do I need to send in the $20 for the museum and dinner now or is that collected on site? Looking forward to seeing everyone and meeting some new friends!

Update guys.

We have a new timing system that is a RFID System. It requires a credit card size piece on your windshield. No transponders for us to keep up with, just a trackside antennae. We are really looking forward to using it.

Due to poor response guys, we will only be doing cruise on Friday and Trackday on Saturday, so Sunday is open. I am hoping we can find a go-cart track somewhere close for those that need just one more thing to do.

I am a bit disappointed in the turnout so far. The up side of that is anyone that shows up should get more track time than ever. If you are on the fence about attending, this would be a great first experience for everyone.

I am bringing the Charger and then driving it to Phoenix so it will be ready for RTTC next month.
Good times indeed.

I will be in guys. I may be towing (shhh- don't tell anyone) since I have to bring other stuff, like timing equipment/sound system.....
Albert and Brian may also tag along with us. Nothing like a roadtrip with friends.
I am open to suggestions for Sunday also.
How long does it take to get back to Phoenix? I need to plan my flight back east asap. Thinking I can be at airport tuesday morning?

DesertFox
02-06-2012, 03:38 PM
Bill, your best options are either a long day in the drivers seat by driving all day Monday (14 hours give or take) or leaving mid day on Sunday, hitting El Paso and the next day have a 6 (ish) hour drive to PHX.
Whatever the case, getting on a plane Tuesday morning isn't an issue... Tom (Project92RS) has to do the same thing.

Project92rs
02-06-2012, 04:04 PM
I will be in guys. I may be towing (shhh- don't tell anyone) since I have to bring other stuff, like timing equipment/sound system.....

We should have some extra room in our truck as well. We aren't towing but I like to have the truck along just in case. The cars we're bringing (88 GTA and 02 Camaro) aren't exactly known for lots of space for luggage, tools, etc on these kinds of roadtrips so it comes in handy. It's also insurance for the worst case scenario of needing to tow one back

And a Tuesday flight won't be a problem unless something goes horribly wrong between San Antonio and Phoenix. Like Val said, we can make it in one long run or stop in El Paso for the night and split it into 2 not as long days of driving.

For all of those making the trip, here is a well-kept secret, a local bank built a replica of the Alamo
(you cannot park or take pictures of your car in front of the Alamo)
But you can take a pic here without much trouble.
(I am not affiliated with the bank or anything like that, just sharing a nice photo location with other enthusiasts)

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/02/1383842_IMGJPG_Thumbnail1-1.jpg
It is located in San Antonio, off Interstate I-10, just a mile or 2 inside of Loop 410 (smack in the north-central part of San Antonio)
I will attach the Google map link in a few minutes.

i never saw it w/ the hood up but it had a killer sound to it. wasn't quite SBF, definately wasn't LS based. had the wrong valvetrain noise to be a mod motor, etc.

I don't know the Ford terminology, but it was (I believe) a new Boss 302 motor. That's what the intake said at least, and it had some Roush Racing components on it (fuel rails, thermostat housing that I noticed). It was a wicked sounding motor, I personally think it was the best sounding car I heard all day going down the straight at speed.

Whooo Hoooo, what a hoot. I was so glad we stopped by. Thanks again Bill. Can't wait till next time! If anyone has pics of my car or others going across the "river" post them. That was cool.

I must have a couple hundred pics of the event, from early sessions to last car off the track. I need to go through and organize/edit them, but tried to get pics of every car at least once. Anyone interested let me know which car is yours and I will try to post a few soon.

Next year I hope to get some from on track! Talk about incentive to get my projects done, I was envious of everyone on track. Looked like a blast.

Missed this event this year but believe me I'll be there next go around.

Any chance this might be back? The Maverick is about ready to come out and play this time but I will have to schedule a few weeks of R&R for the steering rack first.

I for one certainly hope they hold this event again, too bad the weather was a factor but it was still a blast! hope it returns in 2013

Anyone know if this event will be held in 2013? I checked the American Streetcar Series website and don't see it listed. I hope it is held again this year.

Unfortunately, the Texas event is not happening in 2013. Until we can find a venue that people will drive to and participate in, we just can not waste our resources for a hand full of participants.
Just watch our ASCS site and we will try next year at a different venue.

North Texas would likely draw more in. The Optima Challenge last year appeared to have a decent showing. Texas Motor Speedway is a popular venue for DFW area autocross clubs and as you know, Eagles-Canyon is not that far down the road. Also have Cresson Motorsports Ranch on the south side of town and Mineral Well Airport a little further out West with enough room for Time Trials. Fitting it into your schedule is a whole other issue. You still have a day job right. LOL
