wOw!!!! Just had my first earthquake here in Northern Virginia! 5.8 they say and it lasted about 30-40 seconds!
So the lesson learned is when the house is shaking and the cat goes running away your having an earthquake.
Sounds like everyone is O.K., kind of fun after the fact!!!!!!:seizure:

I'm currently sitting on the 38th floor in USX Tower in Pittsburgh, PA. I know this will sound crazy, but we absolutely felt tremors here. 9 minutes after the event they came over the internal sound system and informed us that all was well, that there had been an approx 5.8 quake in VA, and that they were not evacuating the building.

Fun huh?
One of my accounts at work is in Portsmouth, VA and he was saying that some of his neighbors didn't even feel it...
The last sizeable quake we had I was a stoplight in my Ranger, and I was perpendicular to the waves and it had the truck rocking side to side pretty good.

At 5.9....."did you feel something? naw." At 6.0........"I am not sure but we may have had an earthquake." At 6.1....."WEEEEEE that had a fun roll to it!"

was it a rolling sensation or a side to side?

Heavy shaking-bouncing. I'm working on the third floor of a 10 story I believe. At first the floor started mildly shaking and then fairly intense bouncing. I looked out across the third floor and all the overhead lights were swinging.

Not to minimize anything you are saying, but
-the ground in the east coast transmits the energy much more efficiently and thats why it was felt as high as Canada and as low as South Carolina.
-Buildings on the East Coast are not really built to the same "Earthquake" standards that are in Cali.
-If a Blizzard hit SoCal, you guys would be just as panicked as those in D.C. feeling an Earthquake!

It was pretty cool. I think they said the vibrations Jersey got were around a 2 on the scale. Just a mild shaking for a few seconds. Gotta admit it startled me at first but then I kinda realized what was going on and enjoyed it.
Others in my office used it as an excuse to lose their minds, wimper like babies, go home, and slack off for the rest of the day. Kinda jealous that I'm not good enough to fake a freak out to get out of work. lol

Isn't everything in the east more efficient than in CA? :)

the first....depends on the fault it was on. The west coast has had earthquakes that have been felt as far as Alaska. Last time I checked the Plate tectonics on the west coast is closer to land.
the second depends on the age of the building but I believe the new buildings adhere to a US standard. Look at Japan, the built for a 9.0....largest recorded but there have been larger. The video of the sky scrapers swaying 25 feet in each direction gives me the chills.
The third....just thinking of CA drivers on ice covered roads makes me giggle. That would be a world ender right there. Unless it was the 505 at 4:30 Friday afternoon. Then it would be a giant bocce ball match...but with cars.
but kudo's to you guys on the east coast for not killing the stock market over a little trembler.

You should have been here for the Northridge quake in 1994! You could hear that one and it felt like no other quake I have ever felt!
I would also think there are far more old buildings that would be damaged on the east coast.
If it snowed here, I would stay home! People crash all over in a simple rain!

Got some news on the earthquake in VA...the Epicenter has been identified in a small graveyard outside of Washington. Cause identified as "Founding fathers rolling over in graves."

I was 38 miles from the epicenter of the tues quake and it sounded at first like a large military helicopter was landing at the airport next door. As it increased in sound and intensity it quickly became obvious it was no chopper. I was standing on a concrete slab floor and I can tell you it shook like crazy. A lot of historic buildings were damaged both here in Fredericksburg and in DC. Then four days later we had to endure huricane Irene. Has Cal ever had an earthquake and hurricane in the same week?
