I thought I'd share a little project I've been working on in conjunction with Brian Finch & Scott Mock with the board.... The car represents my first plunge into the LS powered world, showcase my 18" Carbon Fiber 3pcs wheels and will showcase Carbon Fiber product offerings from both Carbon Kustoms and Anvil Auto in what I believe to be a subtle yet striking fashion...

Ben Hermance was kind enough to render my interpretation of what I felt was a suitable replacement to my earlier Green 70 Formula (Keylime twist project) and I'm very excited to release the results in the below rendering..
I will be updating the thread with build info over the coming weeks and will be pushing for the build to be completed in time for the planned SEMA cross country tour this November...

Nice looking rendering. I like the wheel design Albert. Are you gonna be riding on air to tuck the wheels like that?

4mul8ion
08-21-2011, 03:54 PM
Very nice!!! From the rendering, it looks like the rear spoiler is lower. Are you planning on changing the height of the rear spoiler?

Kevin

tazzz25906112
08-21-2011, 04:15 PM
Hi John, Na we are however carefully setting up the motor height and have taken design steps to keep this car "very low"..... We are also keeping the sub-frame rails as the lowest point on the car,,, so if push comes to shove we could drop it extremely low if desired with a full suspension... The wheels are 18" Carbon Composite centers and aluminum rim bands creating a light but stronger than Heck wheel.

Good eye Kevin,,,, we are playing with various subtle changes around the car....

Watching this one. Looks like it's gonna be a great build with the names on board ! I'm likin' that front splitter alot. I've been trying to decide on a subtle way to make a clean looking splitter without all the Trans Am flares, and that nails it. Good rendering :twothumbs Can't wait to see the finished car.

It's the SEMA crunch and we're gonna be hustling really hard to get things done.... You all know Scott is a talented guy and his sole focus between now and then is to get this car built... Parts are being delivered daily over at his shop and Scott's friend Brian will start with the paint work Friday... He has committed to a 4 week turn around and we will be assembling components while the body is out for paint.... The interior upholstery is being finished up here in Toronto currently and the drive line is preparing to ship to Scott's any day now... So it'll be a thrash,, but it'll be done....

Albert, is that rear suspension Scott's?

coolwelder62
09-08-2011, 04:02 PM
No,it's a modded Ride Tech 4-link.I fabbed some custom lower tailing arms mount's so I could move the lower tailing arm links in to clear the 18x12 rear wheels and 335 tires 7 work on the full floater 9 in. ford housing. My rear 4-link wont work W/back seat so I went w/Ride-Tech's Quality componet's.Today I machined some LS adapter plates,Got the F-body oil pan bolted up to my extra GTO-LS2 &T56.Will be using it as a mock-up motor&trans until Albert's componet's show up.And went K.C. and picked up some tubing for the roll cage.

We'll have some picture updates soon, however I thought it would be nice to share some news with the board also......

Today I made a deal with Frank from Prodigy Customs to purchase a brand new 418 super charged stroker LS3 to give "Project Cochise" a healthy set of lungs.... I spoke with many people with this being my first LS project and Frank had the magic bullet as you say both in price point and a quality deliverable,,,,, to the others I spoke with,,, thank very much for all the time you spent with me it is greatly appreciated....

Shafi,,,, Keisler stepped up with a great solution as always thank you for all your ongoing patience pal ;-) cause you know this one is going to be beaten on relentlessly my friend....

I also had a long chat with my good pal Mike Manning from "American Auto Wire" and wanted to thank you guys for pushing the order through and supporting Scott's thrash on what is proving to be a very cool little build if I do say so myself... I'm getting Dam excited cause this little Bird should really fly before it's all said and done....

There are more people to thank for their efforts to see quality parts reach Scott on time so that this build can be a reality,,,, and we will be publicly thanking them from time to time on this thread......
And The Thrash Goes On!!!
Thank You All !!!!

Another awesome build, Albert. Those tires aren't the standard 275s up front, are they. Are you going Viper ACR sizes with a 295-30-18 up front and 345-30-19 out back?

Thought I'd share a little something I think is pretty darn special,,,, these gauges are what we plan to place in the Cochise project.... Now the interesting thing is they are actually Auto Meter gauges that have been custom built..... That's right there is an Auto Meter Tach, water temp, fuel pressure and oil temp guage/s in that cluster to look all original..... I love subtle change in custom builds and I think this is a cool little twist that most people won't catch ;-).... BTW I was hooked up by Heather & Pete over at F-body warehouse for making these guages possible and I wanted to say thanks.......

T_Raven
09-29-2011, 09:49 AM
So you put autometer gauges in original clusters to make them look original? Why not just use original gauges?

tazzz25906112
09-29-2011, 01:23 PM
Well Traven you own a bird/s and most likely know they didn't do some of the factory guages in question and the others were done to work with the LS transplant..... We likely could have gone stock on the Tach,,, but hell the Auto Meter is likely a lot more accurate so while you're in there dealing with the changes why not update....

09-30-2011, 05:55 AM
Oh ok gotcha, guess I shoulda looked harder I didn't see the fuel pressure and oil temp, that's actually way cool to add factory looking gauges the factory never offered. And I just realized it was you that posted this thread, how many 2nd gens you got these days?

Hey Albert,
Man that is a killer car you're building!! Glad you're happy with the gauges. Pete over at Fbodywarehouse.com gave me a call and said I should visit the forum.

Here's a little info about the tach. After talking with Frank at Prodigy Customs, we decided to go with the auto meter tach components to match up with the ECM for the LS3. Ponitac used a tach that was built to function with a conventional distributor. They were decent enough at the time, but remember this design was used only 3 years after the introduction of the counter top microwave oven! Here's a pic of a typical Firebird 8 grand tachometer circuit and meter. This type circuit still works well with a distruibutor, but the meter is sluggish and can be nearly impossible to repair if unbalanced.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/10/a7075TransAmtachcircuit-1.jpg

Here is a pic of the autometer circuit and meter. we already had the design and mockup for 2nd gen Camaro in the works. Moving over to Firebird wasn't much more of a challenge since we had already done most of the R&D with Camaro last year. This circuitry is much more reliable, and the air core meter is very responsive. We recalibrated the Auto Meter tach to be accutrate with the Firebird factory markings. The rest is history! As far as I know, you're the first guy on the planet to have an Auto Meter tach with a Firebird face. As a matter of fact, you're the only guy to have a few of those gauges!
Thanks again!
Daniel

Pretty sweet gauge idea Daniel and Albert. My problem with the factory gauges is due to their location in the dash. The steering wheel blocks a lot of my view of them. That's why I just went aftermarket and moved the gauges around. Now I can see the gauges in the entirety.

Thanks for the thought, mate...but I've got a bit of an "aircraft" theme running through my project. I've got Classic Instrument "Steve Moal" designed gauges...

I just install a set of there single ajustable coil over's on my new 72 camaro a let me say. They are night and day better than the strange coil over's that I install org.The car ride as smooth as a new caddillac new.

24hrs of hauling and I'll be there to see it ...... Scott and the gang have been thrashing and now the ultimate challenge faces him LOL,,, me with a wrench in my hands LOL. I've been like a Cat on a Hot Tin Roof,,,, my wife finally told me to get the Hell out of here and go see the car already,,,, LOL so I'm Kansas bound ...

I wanted to pause and thank a few people as this has been an insane thrash... Firstly Scott and his family and friends that have been unbelievable.... Also the gang over at Ride Tech, Forgeline, Baer, American Auto wire, Vintage Air, Optima Batteries, BFG, Heather and Pete from F-body warehouse, Prodigy customs and lastly but not the least of which to mention Brian Finch who as always has my back and has been quietly working in the background assisting Scott where ever possible. We have been bless to have a team of great people pull together on this thrash and I wanted to personally and publicly thank them all very much....

And now my latest favorite photo LOL.

Na Leigh that's an awesome 79 indeed......

Well gang it was actually really a 24 hour drive and I arrive at Scott's house yesterday at noon.... Now this the first chance I've had to log on because we been laughing, thrashing, and eating great..

Scott's workmanship is awesome and the guy is like a robot,,,, he just keeps going. I have to say the best part of the build so far is the guy himself,,, Scott is just so Dam nice that he makes one pause and say wow. He makes you laugh while he runs his schedule for the day right on time,,, funny how one mans time management skills can effect so much while humoring a guest with zero wrench skills ;-)....

The car is stunning (if I can be as bold as make that kind of a statement).... The paint we chose brings out "all" the sexy curves in a Formula and "absolutely pops"...... The Forgeline wheels are stunning on the car and quite frankly have weighing my thoughts on running my own custom Carbon Honeycomb style wheels.

We'll post.some pictures tomorrow (Sat mid day) all things equal.

Looking fine....one of my colour choices was a similiar blue. Nice to see what it looks like with the CF rear panel.
For a modern look, I was going to use the adhesive PONTIAC letters off a G8 trunk lid...spaced like the original rear lettering....they are in a nice hi-tech brushed stainless finish that I think would look great on your car.

Thanks for all the support and comments guys...... You know I do these projects as test beds and real life testing for fit, quality and durability ( the fun part). Utilizing a professional builder like Scott has proven to be a big asset to say the least.. We have confirmed that mold alterations will be required to fit our fenders with the Anvil Formula hood and that we have an adjustment required in order to build the best Dam product we can....

The Cochise has already proven worthy as it signals and has caused a product improvement prior to any
of you dealing with a flaw that could be avoided.... Thanks again Scott,,, your attention to detail has shown it's worth yet again in this amazing 6 week build....

Being a bit on the inside with this project and being updated regularly, I know the trials and tribulations that come with doing these 60 day thrashes. And am intimately familiar with some of the trials and tribulations of and this one in particular.

I tried to do what you did here and got bit by the Fuel injection tuning bug at the 11th hour with MotiV8tr and could not make the race.

So Scott has done what I could not do! So I want Scott and his crew to hear it loud and clear!

I am SUPER IMPRESSED! To build that car in 60 some odd days, go to SEMA, Drive through Rain and Snow 120 miles to the track, Race it competitively, and load it in one piece.............My Hero's!

Could not happen to a nicer bunch of guys!

This car sounded like a screaming devil on the track. I forget the driver's name (sorry) but he had big brass ones. For a car with very little run time and thus very little seat time for him, he pushed the hell out of that car. Watching it come around the last corner and then scream down the front stretch was automotive art. :)

Leigh the car is at Brian Finch's and I'll ask him to shoot the hood latches for you at his first opportunity buddy.....

Well gang what is there to say,,,, Scott did an incredible job against all the odds and Kevin just plain drove the wheels off the car..... The car had a sparkling 2 passes up and down the road when loaded for Vegas and then went on to compete against 51 of top street car builds in the country as chosen by Optima,,,,, Hell does it get any better???? It pulled like a freight train and cornered like crazy right out of the box... This is a true testament to the chassis work of Scott Mock and Ride Tech with there triple coil overs and 4 link....

I have had the pleasure of driving the car briefly and I can tell you with no uncertain doubt that it will be driven on some long hauls because it's just that comfortable,,, and faster than Hell to boot!!!!
This thing is a rocket ship that got confused with the personality of a sporty Cadillac.... The car is smooth in general terms and that accelerator is always (at any speed) standing by to let you know that you're not driving your mothers grocery getter as it pins your A$$ to the seat... The Prodigy 418SC motor is incredible,,,, it is as serious as a heart attack guys. I'm use to some pretty serious cubic inch motors (and in some cases injected as well) and the idea of 600+ ponies is not new to me what so ever..... The interesting thing is that this little LS stroker really has so much torque down low that it makes you feel like an old school big inch big block.... Honestly spoken it shattered my concern about moving away from old school big blocks as it comes on strong while gaining all the advantages of a new school mill.

Anyways I'm getting long winded so I cut this post off.... Thanks for all the positive comments gang and stay tuned for more info on the car as it progress, races, and travels across the country....

Back from SEMA and the Optima and had a great time..... We tied in 24th place (with a three way split for 24th) at the Optima with a untested new car that ad zero sorting time and feel like we won the Holly Grail.... The cars there were incredible and the drivers were "really good" and for us to have finished the car in roughly 6 weeks and compete,,, well lest just say we were more than happy...

This car, driven by Scott's son Kevin, did what others/many said couldn't be done... It was built in six weeks, driven with no testing and placed in a more than respectable spot in the end... It stayed together untested/sorted,,, and in the morning session of group B held the group speed record on the track at one point.... Congratulations to Scott and Kevin for a job well done guys...

Ok gang here is a little something to get your motors going.... I did some shirts for SEMA and I plan to speak to Larry (if I get enough interest,, so show me here on this thread) to auction one of the shirts off and the winning bidder will be handed the keys to Cochise for the auto cross sector of an event this year... You will be responsible for all your own expenses to get to and participate in the event.... That's right if there is enough interest I will hand you the keys for Cochise,,,, of course this will be done as a RatPack/Pro-touring deal to raise money for the "Victory Junction Village" in Tod Gartshore's name.... Larry sorry buddy but me thinks you're going to be hosting a little auction for a shirt buddy ;-)....

John it's way cool and it can accommodate a 315 up front,,,, overall just a pretty awesome sub-frame buddy.I missed this when you posted, but that is cool that it can fit that large chunk of rubber up front like that. You guys did a fantastic job on that 70" Firebird....I really enjoyed the YT clip that was posted and subscribed to your YT channel so that I won't miss any future videos.:smoke:

Just thought I'd share a picture from out in Vegas when unloaded the car,,,,, It still amazes me that we pulled this off and achieved a result like this in such a short window....

The car is flat out AWESOME!!!!! What kind of seats are in the car?

tazzz25906112
01-07-2012, 12:08 PM
Thanks man,,, the seats are Sparco 505's that have been re-covered in 09-10 (I believe if memory serves me) Cadillac leather utilizing the Sparco pattern....

I see you're in the market for a 70-73 Camaro... I have 2 Camaro's complete (70Z and 72RS 555 aluminum motor car) and 4 pro-touring TA's at various
stages of build maybe we can do some biz as it seems we share similar tastes on vehicles...

I got to finally see this car at Run to the ole south last weekend.
This car is killer in person. It definately screams when the throttle is cracked. I really like the hood hinges too!!

Beautiful work.
