View Full Version : adding a baffle to fuel tank?

I spent a little time looking around and found no baffled fuel tanks for my car. I did come across a few pre-made add-in baffles, but i dont really want to cut open and weld my tank back together. I have issues of fuel starvation when under a half tank when either cornering hard or launching hard. I thought of adding a tee and using two strainers, but I would still have the same problem. Is it possible to make something to fit inside the opening, or am I on my own for this?

Baffling isn't very useful... the same thing that attempts to keep fuel around the pickup also keeps it away from the pickup. Trap doors, check valves and the like are better for that.

However, the very best answer is to use a VaporWorx setup, which can be adapted to an original tank, purchased pre-installed with a new Rick's Tank, or used with a custom fabricated tank. It makes use of late-model OEM fuel supply solutions (5th gen Camaro, CTS-V) that solve all the associated fuel delivery problems at once. Highly recommended.

Search here for "VaporWorx".

I'm just finishing the custom aluminum tank for Unfair using it. Very impressive technology.

Yes, use a 4th gen fuel pump module like this. You will not have to add any baffles.

ouch, the tank setup from vaporworx is going to set me back almost as much as my motor. i also have an external fpr, so the ls1 setup isn't going to work for me. i was thinking of fabricating a housing similar to that of the ls1 module and somehow affixing it to the tank, or to the actual fuel pump support assembly. are there any other options?

I too have an external fuel pressure regulator.
The stock fuel pressure regulator is not that hard to remove. It is held in place with a spring clip.
For more information use the key words, "2nd Gen Tank Suggestions" in this forum.
This link shows the stock regulator removal.

Late 3rd gen tanks are baffled; its was a 1LE option earlier, but became standard later. If you can get around your regulator issue, why not use a complete late 4th gen tank? They'll fit with very minor modifications, and its probably the cheapest way to go.

The only problem with using the 4th gen tank is the fuel level sender, it operates on 40 to 240 ohms. The 89 operates on 0 to 90 ohms. the same as the 79 TA I am working with. I will retain the original fuel level sender. Then mount the 4 gen pump module off to the side of the tank. The fuel level sender on the 4th gen pump is easily removed.

didnt think about the fuel level sending unit, but that would be a bit of a problem. however i dont run factory gauges and would be as simple as changing gauges. an ACCEL fuel pump is only $130, but even a used ls1 module from a salvage yard is pretty much as expensive (let alone finding one). Bulldawg, do you know which year precisely the tanks became factory baffled?

On my earlier post, I forgot to mention that the car I saw had the 4th gen gauges swapped in, too (the whole dash IIRC), so that is how he got around the ohm issue.
There seems to be a lot of debate in the 3rd gen community about which tanks were baffled, other than the 1LE tanks, but all 3rd gen tanks (V6 or V8) carried the same part # from 89-92, and MOST are baffled. The baffling is much simpler than what is used in a modern tank...basically just a small plastic bucket that the pump sits in.

I just modified my stock 70 lemans tank with one of these from tanksinc.com. I think it came out pretty nice.

I bought a new tank and then cut it up for the this for my efi conversion. You may not need to go that far, but a simple tray around the base with your return line flowing into it and a hole or two at the bottom might be enough to fix the issue.
