I just purchased a running 454 out of my buddy's 73 pickup for 200 bucks! I am looking to build it for 500 hp/tq. My idea was to dissasemble, look at the bearings, cylinder walls, ect to see what machine work is needed. If it all checks out good, what would you guys recommend doing as far as machine work. I want to run the stock crank, rods, and pistons if possible. As far as heads go i know the stock truck heads flow terribly, so i want to upgrade the heads. Any reccomendations? Just lookin for some basic info and ideas. THANKS!

It depends on what truck heads you have. If they are the 781 or 049 heads those are the best factory ovals to have. You can install 2.19/1.88 valves and a quick cleaning of the bowl area should get the power you want. The factory crank can be kept but the rods should be checked if they are 3/8 or 7/16th bolt. If they are 3/8 bolt rods ditch them and get some entry level scats. 7/16th rods can be upgraded to arp bolts. Get rid of the pistons. The factory pistons only have 8:1 from the factory and wont make the power you want.

The truck is a 73 Camper Special. It came with a 14 bolt rearend and a stick. On the casting you mentioned, are those the last 3 numbers in the casting? What pistions would hold the power. At some point i will run a 150 shot of nitrous. Thanks for the help. Also it is a 4 bolt main.

Any good forged piston would hold that power. Just look for one with a 30-35cc dome. Yes those numbers I gave you were the last three numbers in the casting.

9.5:1 compression, rv cam and air gap intake will do it. A friend of mine had this combo and it made over 500/500 on the engine dyno. I believe the cam was somewhere in the 460.460 range, had hypers for pistons too
