Hey guys, looking to change up the exhaust on my 1973 383 camaro (street car). Currently, I have 3” piping to dynomax bullets dumped at the rear axle. It is sounds like open headers.
I’m thinking I’d like to keep the 3” but do an X or H pipe with some better sounding mufflers and then dump the exhaust at the back of the car. I don’t mind the aggressive sound but would like something that isn’t obnoxious.
Any recommendations on mufflers? How about Borla XR-1’s?
X or Y pipe?

I have Aero Chambers from Hooker on my Cutlass. They sound awesome.
if its aggressive, it will be obnoxious, and everyone says they like the noise and at least 3 or more times a week, guys come crying into our speed shop wanting quieter mufflers, I drive mine everyday, I say go as quiet as you can

Ditti! And put in some electric cutouts when you want to hear the noise!!!

Put some tailpipes on it, that will cut down on the noise your hearing. The exhaust is bouncing off the pavement underneath the car, which makes it bounce off the floor plans.

Thanks for the input guys. DMH Electric cutouts and quiet mufflers may be the best of both worlds. I'm just not sure I want to drop that kind of money... For a quiet muffler, would you suggest Magnaflow? If so, do you have a specific part number?

I agree running the exhaust to the back will quiet it down but I still think it will be extremely loud...I may just try this before purchasing new mufflers though.

Magnaflow are good... Pypes Race Pros are less expensive and equal if not better quality imo! Tails out the back... dumps if you want them, Pypes has them as well!

I would run the exhaust out to the back first, see how it sounds. If you like it then you saved yourself money by not buying new mufflers. If you still think its to loud, then you can replace the mufflers. Running them to the back is the right way to do exhaust anyways, IMO
An X or H pipe will also quiet things down a bit.

Bullets sound great with a x pipe and tail pipes. I would give that a try first. I think you will like it.

Tailpipes will drop it 10DBs easy, but bullets are still hella loud. Hooker Areo Chambers do sound awesome and do not rob power. I run them on my Street Racer and push 1000HP though 3" and the car is no faster on open headers.
Magnaflow are excellent also, Stainless and priced great especially for complete systems with X pipe.

What's wrong with good ole 40 series flowmasters?? Won't be quiet but alot more mellow than bulletts...

Forgive me for saying but Flowmasters suck. They steal power (we have proven it on the dyno) and sound like marbles in a coffee can. We call it the Flowmaster rattle.

I really hate Flowmaster or any chambered muffler... nothing but noise machines.
I love my Magnaflows, x-pipe and tail pipes. Nice mellow sound at idle and cruising.. and if I want the noise I just step on the gas..

Lol! I've yet to hear this "flowmaster rattle"....
I have to say though that different applications will net different gains/losses with different mufflers....

My 3" Borla XR1's dumped aren't that quiet at all...certainly not open headers dbs, but they are loud. They don't have a deep sound, but have more of an aggressive "bark" to them.

I have Magnaflows with tail pipes and they are quiet until you step on it, then you hear it..

Steven - did you use the 12" mufflers? I really like the sound of the XR1s....

I got the 40944's which look like the 16" case. I use an x-pipe so they could certainly be louder in 12" and no x-pipe....but I like my setup quite a bit. Any louder and I think the cops would give me a hard time.

I have Magnaflows with 3" pipes on my 2nd gen Camaro. They are not quiet at all. In fact, everybody says they can hear me comming long before they see me!

I really like my Pypes 3" Race Pro mufflers, not too loud at idle and really sounds good on a big block when you open it up :)

I daily drove 75 miles a day for 5 years magnaflows with 500 hp NA Ford 347 and honestly I didnt like the way they sounded. they were a lot quieter than the flowmaster 40 series I replaced but that was about it. I would do Borlas or Pypes RacePros with a Dr. Gas x-pipe
