I might have put this in the wrong forum, but I was wondering what you folks thought about starting with one of these for a project...

I think they're cool--especially the early years. Saw a rendering once with a split front bumper like a 2nd gen RS Camaro.

Funny you mention that,Steve. In 1975,I owned a new 75 Cosworth Vega and a 73 V8 Vega built by Don Hardy. The split bumper always appealed to me on the 2nd Gen Camaros so I split & molded the front bumper to look alike. Loved driving the Cosworth car but it just didn't cut it as a family car,,no a/c. The 73 was a very quick streetcar with 406 sbc,TH350,and Hardy-narrowed 12 bolt rear w/4.56 cogs. It ran 12.70's at 109mph through the mufflers & on street tires,,pretty stout for the day. Ended up gutting the car and installing a full chromoly chassis so it could run in Super Pro. With a 427 sbc,PG w/5500 Coan converter, and a Dana 60 rear w/5.86 cogs,it was a consistent 5.90 car on the local 1/8 mile tracks.
My neighbor has a 72 Vega GT that I've been trying to buy for over five years. He knows I want to build a serious Prostreet/Protouring hybrid and doesn't want the car modified. :ssst:

:hmm: Is there something else you can do with a Vega? :dunno:

Probably the hardest part of building a Vega is getting a decent sized tire on it and still make it look "right". Most I've seen look like they are sitting too high.

Oh.......uhm....... :naughty: I'm looking for a '75...Vega or Pont. Astre...excellent body...unmodified...real cheap...in case anybody comes across one taking up valuble space. :candle:

Don is still around and kicking and he still has quite a few v8 vega kits around the shop or at least last time i was up there anyway. he is still in Floydada but he mostly does irrigation stuff nowadays.

hhm, what would i do if i had a cosworth vega??

Oh yea... been driving mine as is since i first restord it and got my lisence. (all of 3 years ago) if the engine was matching numbers id probally just do a dual weber carb swap, get the compression back to 11.5 to 1 and the power up to around 240-250 like it was supposed to be before emisions got in the way...

as for mine the block doesnt match the car, head isn't orgional to the block, dash was missing when i bought it so i dont even know what number cosworth it is(only 3508 ever built) so im thing of droping in one ot these suckers. http://www.cosworth.com/Default.aspx?id=1093926 255 to start with not to bad for N/A, with a nice small garrett turbo something along the lines iof a gt28, nothing to serious 6-10lbs of boost being it would still be my daily driver and need to remain reliable.. were talking somewhere in the range of 300+ hp,(400-500 with complete rebuild but that just overkill(who wants to rebuild there engine every 6 months) hooked up to an aftermarket 6 speed for a cosworth sierra and a shortened 8.5" 3.73 posi rear with disc brakes(from an s10)..... should be pretty quick and still handle like a cosworth... too many vegas have lost there handling due to a massive v8 up front......

Along with s10 drop spindles, 6pt roll bar made to resemble the tigercage from AirRideTech, and a killer autio system, among many many other things should be able to get it done for around $20,000, in 1 year so in reality that means 2-3. sounds alike alot to me to, but these cosworth race engines never go out of style, (ask and sierra or escort owner) and when you consider the price of a new car starts to make a little more since. plus this is my first car, you just cant put a price on that. how mush would you pay to have your first car back in protouring condishion no less
