I had a customer bring me a 67 coupe with a 98 4 valve 4.6 and t-5 to finish and sell. Another custom bought it for parts and wants to switch to a newer 07 4.6 and 6 speed in his 67 fast back. Anyone done anything like this? I already know I have to loose the stock inner fenders and remake them to clear the heads. Just looking for some input before I jump in.

I am putting a 3v 4.6 and T3650 out of an 06 mustang into my 65 falcon. If it had a DOHC 4.6 already in it then the 3v will fit no problem, it is not as wide as the 4v, also uses the same engine mounts. Headers might be the one challenge, of th shelf units typically will not work, I plan on either keeping the manifolds for the time being or go custom built long-tubes (available funding will decide the direction) I am using the TCI Mustang/Cougar IFS adapted to fit the Falcon framerails, this clears up all the room needed and puts a better supsension under the front at the same time.

THanks for the info- we were planning on doing the Maier Racing coil over conversion in the front to make room but this other customer took his offer so hes using the Heidts mustang 2 front end. That and hes not looking ot set the world on fire. He wants his high school car to fire without question in any weather and to increase handling and braking but not looking for a race car. I think this is going to be a nice compromise and substantial upgrade from the popular 5.0 swaps.

That was my thought, I wanted to do something different as well as have a nice smooth reliable powerplant. With the stage II heads, cams and new intake manifold I am strapping on my takeout drivetrain looking to lay down 400+rwhp and be able to turn 7000rpm, should make the litttle Falcon move. BTW the all aluminum 4.6 from the 05-09 stangs only weights 410lbs fully dressed.

Heidits should work well and free up all the room you need. Look forward to seeing your progress, as a shop you will most likely finish up before I do, so make sure and work out all the issues to make it easier for me.

haha- well the car gets dropped off tomorrow so ill post progress as I go. FOr now hes going to leave the drive train bone stock. Down the road we will most likely ad a blower or maybe just cam and heads. I keep telling him the 300hp and clutch is going to feel three times as fast as the 190hp 289

heres where we are now.

motor fit when we notched the pan and the hood support. Had to take out the brake master and boosted as well. other than that everything went smoothly.

thought we were going ot have to lower the rack to get it under the hood but everything squeezed in

i just got the clutch master from modern performance. and i different kit to make some urethane motor mounts instead of solid. So mock up one more time. Fab the steering and figure out if we can still fit power brakes and then wiring. I dont think this swap is as hard as people make it out to be. Its probubly just expensive to do the mustang 2 swap at the same time so people shy away from it. The Hiedts kit has to be the easiest front end swap we've ever done.

Any updates? Did you guys get the engine wired up and running yet?

its almost done- This car has been a huge cluster F&%K! No one has any support for them. We bought a dun right harness that they supposedly make for Ford Racing. Nothings been right- Ive got a good electrical guy sorting it right now. Before we went to the dyno we had the key cycling, fuel pump just no ignition. The SCT tuner told us that was normal and the pats is keeping it from cranking. If I had it to do over again I would adapt the 07 variable speed fuel pump and complete system into the car. We hot wired it the other night and and got the injectors and ignition firing. Im going to clean all that up with proper relays and fuses and take it back to the tuner to have a fuel map built. Then Ill let you know how it turned out. I guess the conversion hasn't been as bad as I make it out to be. The actual car needed a lot of work and the customer didnt budget for any extras. We've rebuilt the column, did a roller conversion on the pedals that someone had done a hack repair earlier as well as a ton of other little ad on's so all those things have made fro slow progress.

had to make a column support bushing to use two universals with the rack

he also upgraded to baer rear brakes and we got the stance a little better but the wheel offset is wrong so this is as low as we can go

yes thats a threaded nut they used

the water neck outlet, power steering and oil filter was fun fitting everythign in the same space but it all worked out. Ill take some detailed shots later, but we cut the stock manifold apart- tapped the oil and used a remote mount filter and welded a 90 onto the water neck

So did you use the Ford Racing control pack or stock computer from the donor car? Reason I ask is that I plan to use the FRPP Control Pack and it is set up for a return style fuel system. Hopefully I can avoid your electronics woes.

I used the computer from the donor car and planned on having a local dyno shop and SCT dealer map the fuel system with a return style system. I had a no miles harness and was looking for someone to convert it. when I came across dunne right he told me they are contracted to build the harnesses for Ford Racing and that he could supply me with a 6 or 7 wire plug and play hook up since I already had a complete harness and drive by wire pedal and ecu. After looking at the wiring diagrams some more this morning the colors i have seem to be mismatched from late 06- early 07 and some wires are color coded as its a 08?!? We already hot wired it and have injectors and ignition firing so Im sure we will get it sorted but like I said one of these conversions isnt for the novice ford efi guy. Seems like there are a dozen chevy guys in my immediate area where I can ask questions and no one knows about these 3 valve fords.

I hear ya, there is a vast amount of knowledge about the ford 3v just not much as it pertains to engine swaps. The mustang guys love to mod them but the basic systems (like wiring and computer) are never on thier radar since they come from the factory working just fine. I have a stock computer out of an 06 but think I will go the Ford Control Pack route anyway, hopefully that leads to more of a plug and play installation. The one good resource I have found is on the FFR message boards since some of the cobra guys have gone this route and used a 3V in thier Factory Five cobras.

Car looks great BTW, nice work making it all happen. I agree the wheels look alittle off, and it would look better a little lower, but you have to work with what you got.
