View Full Version : Advice on selling my car

I was going to post this under the selling forum, cars, but I don't have enough threads posted to do that. I have been a member since 2009 but read more than I post. Regardless, my 1972 chevelle has to go up for sale due to a divorce / property sale / divorce. Where is the best place to move it? I tried ebay but there are more tire kickers there than anything. I have near 100 pictures of the build and technical details, I have 5 videos with the engine running, air ride going down, trunk area, interior, etc. Also have a 5 page document of everything done, installed, wired, etc.

I am way deep into this thing with money and realize it will take the right buyer, how do you best go about selling your baby that you went overboard on without losing your entire shirt, shoes and pants????

Unless you can find the "right" buyer as you mentioned, you don't.
It's seldom that we get out what we've got into these rides without the perfect buyer.

And now is not the best time to be trying to unload a project car either.
I know you mentioned the "D" word, but is there a court order, or some other reason why you have to sell now?

As for efforts to sell, maybe post some build threads on this and other sites, to let people know how much time, money, sweat and blood you've got into it, then try to sell it.
I'd try all of the outlets.
Craig's list, Flea-Bay (set the reserve you need) and any of the muscle car/hot rod sites you can find.
The more exposure you can get the better.
If it's free, better still.

I'm sorry this is happening to you, and wish you all the best.

It's a long story that involves other variables than the divorce itself. The time and energy I put into my ride was never meant to be anything more than a statement of what I like and how I do things. Never meant to profit or allow someone else to let their grubby hands on it! However, life goes on and kids and property are the focus at this point. Gotta look down the road for my muscle car fix. Ebay and Craigs list got me tons of views on the car and a few offers pending the buyer sells this or that or they want to trade this or that. I need to find the guy that wants an A-body that goes to the frame, correctly, with 22" wheels stuffed under it and wants 610HP of 496 shooting out the back. This is a very unique car with what I did with it, just need to find someone that has the same taste. The sound is down right nasty and the air ride dropping it to nothing will be the keys to selling it. I am thinking of Mecum auction in September so people can see it and hear it versus pictures.

The auction is a good idea.
Throw some pics up here. May draw some interest, who knows?

If this is a split the money from the property deal, I'd sell it to a close friend or relative for cheap with the stipulation that you can get it back from them for the same amount later. There is really no reason that the soon to be Ex should benefit from the hard work you put into your dream car.

+1

I ran into someone at a gas station in the middle of winter once and he was driving an old car in immaculate condition. Kind of just filling my truck with a puzzled look staring at it and he noticed; said he was on his way to a friends house with it after he sold it to the friend for $1 so his soon-to-be-ex-wife wouldn't get it in the divorce. You may end up paying taxes for it twice over (if you pay your friends portion) but that should be something to consider till everything settles down and potentially allow you to keep it. Maybe if you are set on selling it doing that could give you more time as well.

I bought my friends boat that way (on paper).
Wasn't about to let his crazy ass soon to be ex have it!

Here are a few links to you tube videos I posted for the chevelle. The first couple show it with the air ride up, then there are two with it down to the frame. I was close to selling Ride Tech my custom brackets I did for the spring pockets and differential axle tubes but they decided to make their own once learning how I got 22" wheels under it and still got it to the frame....... The trick is shock waves, not bags, and the correct length, end type and diameter. Took me and them 14 shocks, 2 computer rewrites and about 200 hours to get it right

Damn!! I just bout burned my fingers on the computer keyboard! Your Chevelle is HOT!

As the guys said above - mix it up with a little Craig's List, eBay (you can list classified ads for free on eBay - no fees - only catch is it has to be a listed price - no auction - and it only will be shown in a 200 mile radius of your location - still a good place for exposure - I just sold my 02 SS Camaro that way), also might try the various muscle car consignment companies - RK Charlotte (in NC) comes to mind.

You should be proud of your build..............it really looks great.......and remember you can always build/buy another one when the time is right.

Best of luck with your Chevelle.

All the action is at auctions. Mecum is my favorite, we sold 5 out of 6 at Indy

I appreciate the comments. If you knew me personally it would explain allot about the car. I obsess and don't let go till the final result is gotten, even if it means sending 14 shocks back and forth to ride tech or going through 10 coy wheels till the back spacing and sizes are dead nuts. Every joint on the wiring harness is hand soldered, there are 5 microprocessors in the car when you consider dakota digital cruise, the computer controlled air ride, the digital ignition, the vintage air a/c system and the variable speed flex light fans. I am going to cry when it actually sells and I may just have a friend handle the transaction so I don't have to see it loaded up. I am not sure I even wish to meet the person who buys it, the damn thing is so much me that it does not matter who pays what or where it goes, it will always be me!

My unpaid advice (= what it's worth)...do not sell this car! You put your heart and soul into it, so figure it out. Get the Ex to take a note for 1/2 the value, find a way to keep the value low, have a friend buy it, find some other debt to offset it, get a pitbull atty, whatever it takes. Good luck!

The other thing you could do is PM Larry the admin or maybe a moderator and explain your case and ask permission to post in the for sale section. They can allow you to post if they choose to. I honestly would let you if I had the ability to do so.
