View Full Version : starter hangs up
Looking for some advice, the starter hangs up for a few seconds after start up. its a ls with 621 bell housing and a stock starter. tried a spacer but the starter will not fit in the bottom of the bell with it. should i grid down the bell housing a little to get it to fit with the spacer

Did you match the starter to the flywheel

I notice you say spacer. Are you using a washer or are you using starter shims? I'm not tying to be picky. The reason I ask is starter shims come in a pack with various thickness shims. I would start with one .010 to see if it helps. This is often all you need to solve a bind.

On our L92/LS3 conversion I went with a 6.0L truck starter because it was cheaper and inside the box was a notice that it would continue to engage (hang) for up to a few seconds after the engine started. Kind of annoying, but seems ok.
thanks guy's, i was able to get a .015 shim to fit. ill give that a try once i get my battery back from the machine shop.

I've done a couple motors with 621 bell housings. One fit fine, the other had a slight onterference problem with the starter. Grind a little material off the housing so the starter slides in easily and then try shimming again.
