A little while ago I was reading a chevy mag. and saw a add for heat shrink radiator hose clamps. Does anyone know who makes them, I cant find anything anywhere?

Gates makes them. Any local parts store that stocks Gates should be able to get them for you.

Gates makes them they are called "Powergrip". Prices varying depeneding upon size but locally a 1.5" band cost about $6 each.

I've been running them for 6 years now - they're GREAT! The ONLY disadvantage is that they are not reusable. They seal and look great though!

As mentioned, Gates makes them as "powergrip" clamps. Carquest also "private label"s them. I've bought them at Napa, Carquest, and McMaster Carr.

69 has it right, McMaster Carr is the least expensive route.

NAPA has them also, branded NAPA but mfg. by Gates. Most auto parts stores don't carry them, or don't know what they are.

By far, they are the best and most reliable hose clamp available. There are pics on my website of both the radiator and heater hose connections with the clamps.

I'm really interested to know more about these heat shrink hose clamps now. How do they work? Just slip them on and run the car and it'll shrink tight around the hose? Are they new - is that why a lot of parts stores don't carry them?

Slip on and apply heat slowly with a heat gun until secure. As the hose heats up during use they will snug up even more. I think they have been used on large trucks for some time now. Go to page 221 in the McMaster Carr catalog or website.

do you know if they will work on a braided hose like the earls pro-lite 350 for a rad hose connection?

The only thing I don't like is the lack of servicability. They are a real biatch to get off without damaging the hose.

Do you have the removal tool Todd? A soldering iron works too but you have to be carefull.

I love them, and never leak or distort the hose to cause a leak. I think most store do not know about them is due to them originally listed in Gates racing catalog and not a regular use item. My local Oreillys now keeps them on the shelf for me

Carl, I've been using these for years but did not know they have a removal tool. I use a pair of diagonal cutters and snip slowing, maybe a 1/4" at a time. Never damaged a hose.

MikeRockAuto has the tool, at a cool $25.79 http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?catalog=64&partnum=91215&a=FR64-91215-811721

I guess the different part #'s are for the different diameters?

Yep, and it's best to install the hose then measure. The sealing bead can change the diameter enough to effect the clamp size choice.
