The following are my favorites of these rides. I like other Ringbrothers' mustang's better but the one below is probably still my favorite of the pics in this thread. I've never seen any of these other cars elsewhere.

Is there any penalty point-deductions for horrid ugliness, stupid ideas, and poor taste? Just curious.
If so, the Anvil Mustang will win hands-down.

I just notice that the front grill and headlight surround of the Road Runner is billet - All of it. A Mustang will win this year. Anvil - Ring Brothers. The RS Nova reminds me of the new Transformers movie (I mean this in a good way) - Tons of fabrication - The front end is insane, over the top. Whew! How about the 71 Mustang - I'm liking that body style of late.

I am pulling for Goolsby's Pegasus, they took a car with odd proportions and made it look right. It is a very clean build with some heavy and tasteful fabrication. I have seen it up close and the attention to detail is impressive. The RB Mustang looks really nice too as does RS Innovator.

It's a lot of great fabrication skill on display. There's also a tremendous quantity of effort that we should all bow down to. Then there's the money...
But ground effects? They make me throw up in my mouth. Neither Chevy nor Ford ever needed a Mitsubishi Eclipse in their lineup...

I'm rooting for RPM and Gerry's "Runt" (the dark cherry Chevy II). Got to root for my hometown folks. But, there's lots of nice stuff there!

Very nice selection! If it were up to me, the Anvil Mustang would win hands down. But I can also see it not getting the award because it hasn't had every square inch massaged. The Ringbrothers car is in second place (hope they brought enough glue though in case some bolt heads fall off :) )
The Roadster shop Nova has a ton of excellent fab work done, but they lost me completely on the grill and mirrors. That is just weird.
And the chopped Plymouth? Yikes.

The Roadster Shop Nova Is insane... saw a photo of the underside... totally blown away! They took a risk with the grill, but since it looks like a prototype car for the future of hot rodding, I think it may grow on people... even though at the moment im not in love with it.
I Love the Ringbrothers Mustang but the Anvil Mustang just does it for me... its the type of car i would build if I had money...Love It.
All the other cars are works of art too... Its awesome to see the level of skill, innovation and quality that hot rodding has come too.

Are you sure you know which one is the Anvil Mustang??? It's really pretty subtle (white, gold wheels)...
I can't really believe you meant this car:

I'm thinking he means the other cars get points deducted leaving the Anvil Mustang the winner.
It's a tough call but I really like the RB mustang. Really great work on that one guys. Pegasus is interesting. As mentioned, they took an odd year Mustang and really made it look fantastic.

Have you seen it in person? It's got some crazy nice stuff done.. mods don't have to be up in your face to be nice.. the fenders are dry carbon.. the suspension is a work of art.. It more than deserves to be in the running for SMOTY.

Steve, no, I have not seen it in person,I vaguely remember seeing the build thread on Lateral-g last year, maybe I missed some pics, I don't recall seeing anything that would catch my attention, unless it was another car I'm confusing this with.I tried quick searching ,but didn't find the build thread. In reference to what i said earlier I don't doubt that the fabrication of the mechanical elements weren't top notch; just not appealing to me visually, Just my two cents.

I think the anvil car deserves it--it's by far the most complete package of excellent design and execution.
Then again, it could just be that it's white and gold with red interior. I apparently have a thing for that.

I've seen a lot of discussion and comments here regarding what may or may not constitute a "Street Machine of the Year". I'm wondering if something has gone horribly wrong when it comes to the judging standards. We will see tonight I guess.
So what does it take???
Seems some guys focus on "Wow", the fabrication or Man Hours in a particular car while others mention "Style" or lack thereof simply to throw another "Do Dad" or a hunk of "Bling" on a car seemingly to make it more worthy of the award!
Probably not making any friends here but that's what I see.
Are these big name awards going the way of say the "World of Wheels" judging or the AMBR judging where the more fabrication the better and less focus on the whole package?? I don't know. We shall see.
It all should be a balance on unique and subtle fabrication along with equal points with regard to style.
I know these aren't P/T cars but here the balance of style and fabrication are right on the money and I am aware that a Pro/Touring car certainly has to project a different personna from these but it shouldn't be at the expense of other factors.

Ha, style counts so you post pics of two ugly cars, a four door, and typical moal car with too much stuff.
Style is subjective, it always will be. Very few of us will agree on what's good or bad and it really doesn't matter as long as the car owners are happy.

It's gotten just as bad as it did in the street rod world. It's only a matter of time before a shop turns out a 100% fabricated and style-ized Camaro, Mustang, Nova, Cuda, etc that is nothing more than a pure show piece. Nothing wrong with that, but it's gotten a little silly some of the changes these shops are making. In my opinion there is a lot of change for the sake of change going on. It is all very very impressive and I bow eternally to their skill.....but has anyone ever heard the saying "too much of a good thing?"
That is why the Anvil car is my pick. It's just right.

I agree on the Anvil Mustang based on as much as I know about it although I would have liked to have seen a different color choice. Also agree that sometimes "Too Much" is a bad thing.

OK, so let's explore this. I posted the Rydell Chevy to specifially show the incredible work that was done to the car comparing it side by side to a stock '50 Chevy. Just about every panel on that car was sectioned yet NOT to the point where the car is out of proportion to what it should look like (See Plymouth). You also may have missed the fact that despite it being a 4 door, the car utilizes longer 2 door front doors to make it look like a 2 door. Very innovative at the time. Wes Rydell is also a family man and has cruised the country with that car with his family in tow.

On Tim's Moal car:
As you may or may not see, Tim's car is NOT over the top like some of Steve's builds after Tim's car. I know Steve and Tim's car is the only car I've photographed. Later Moal cars DID have a lot of Bling on them and why??? As mentioned earlier, I believe it is due to unusual judging criteria especially regarding the AMBR Trophy which Moal would enter his cars in. There in lies the potential problems regarding balancing fabrication skills and style with respect to major awards.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/07/ta2-1.jpg
Sometimes things just get out of hand. One guy wins big with black wheels, then everybody starts putting black wheels on their car no matter what the color combination is. Early on, one guy puts 18's on their car, the next guy puts on 20's. Then the next guy has to put 22's and so on. The last time I was in Columbus, there was a guy driving around with a Chevelle and just had to put the number 24 on his 1/4 glass. Like nobody noticed how stupid his stock height Chevelle looked with 24 inch rims on it. As I said, Sometimes, things just get out of hand!

I don't want this thread to go into a spiral of board comparisons, personal comments, and the like.
All: Let's leave the thread about the cars, please. Civil critical comments about the cars are ok, but critical personal comments are not. Comments criticizing other posters for criticizing the SMOTY cars (think of the small irony there) will be deleted.

I didn't say anything bad about the car and wasn't taking anything away from it, just noting that it had a couple of extra doors. I am well aware of Rydell's cars and the fact that he usually drives them very much. As far as the longer front doors, that was a good move but i believe poteet had a green 47 sedan delivery that also had longer doors on it and may have predated the Rydell car. For that matter, there were likely several cars that had the longer doors swapped on before that.....
On Tim's Moal car:
As you may or may not see, Tim's car is NOT over the top like some of Steve's builds after Tim's car. I know Steve and Tim's car is the only car I've photographed. Again, I didn't mean anything negative about the car, just typical Moal with too much stuff. the exhaust, the mirrors, the windshield, or the wheels do not help the car at all. In your eyes they don't hurt the car and in my eyes they don't help.
Style is subjective guys, it doesn't matter what we are talking about. Some people are into Meagan Fox, I'm partial to Anne Hathaway. If we, let's say, "widened the track width" on either one of those subjects our opinions might change but a whole new group of people would love the new version.
I realize this discussion may be new for some of you, but style vs function vs winning shows has been a topic of debate in the street rod world since the early 60's at least. That was a time when judging points systems dictated ugly cars and it carried through all the way to now. There really isn't any sense in people getting wound up over what they thought was a styling mistake because the bottom line is still, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.
Just take the cars for what they are, enjoy what you think are the highlights, and don't sweat the rest.
One other thing, over the top cars usually create products that trickle into the aftermarket for us to consume. Some of them good, others not so much, either way more products are a good thing as it allows us to further individualize our cars with out having to be a world class fabricator or machinist.
Congrats to all the cars that competed for the SMOTY award.

Things certainly have changed since Kyle Tucker won the first GG's SMOTY award with the Twister Camaro. A car built by a guy in his garage before he started his business. There is no chance of a home built car winning anymore. The Twister Camaro wouldn't be considered now.
I wish I could have made it to the show to see the cars, the only one I saw in person was the RB Mustang. I admire all of the custom work these guys do and wish I could do a fraction of the work and had the ideas. These cars are becoming more artwork than cars but hopefully after a year on the show circuit, they'll get driven and enjoyed.
I may have voted for the first gen Nova.

Things certainly have changed since Kyle Tucker won the first GG's SMOTY award with the Twister Camaro. A car built by a guy in his garage before he started his business. There is no chance of a home built car winning anymore. The Twister Camaro wouldn't be considered now.
Having been to three of the Columbus shows ( only one with a car-where I was severly humbled and educated on the game of big name car shows - read into it what you will... ) , I have often thought this as well. It's wonderful to see all the machine work and craftsmanship that these "shops" put into these cars. Should they have a "homebuilt" top class and a "shop built class" and then a showdown between the two? I do thank all these wonderful builders for keeping the interest up in classic hotrod protouring cars, after all thats what keeps the shop full.
I still love the RB's Kona mustang, not blingy... just little things (functional) that kept you looking and asking Mike "how'd you do this and that".
