View Full Version : Bad Penny is hitting the drag strip this weekend.. guess the ET and win a prize
Steve1968LS2

I will think of some sort of cool prize for whoever comes closest to guess the best ET I get all weekend. MPH will be used as a tie breaker.
Will be running the car this weeked at California Speedway. HP on the chassis dyno is about 590rwhp and the car weighs around 3280 without me. Everything will be like I drive on the street but I will be running 345/35/18 Mickey Thompson ET Street drag radials.
Manual trans, 3.90 rear gears.. yada yada
So, take a guess and win something..
Oh, and wish me luck against Centerforce's 2010 supercharged Camaro.. :2nd:

You should let everyone know the whole story, you're running at Fontana in the summer! One of my old buddies was there last week in his 10.4 index car, and he was running 12's. Id I had to take a stab in the dark id say 12.7 @ 125mph and you wont get any traction until 330 +. Racing in Fontana in the summer is like racing on butter covered in hand soap!

I thought I said it was this weekend (which is summer) and that it was at Fontana??? ;) -- Wish this was happening in Pomona, which is still warm, but a much better track.
This is true... Fontana is an "iffy" track.. but it's all we have. The good news is that it will be cooler this weekend and only in the 80s. It will be what it will be... I fairly confident the car is capable of mid 10s, but we'll see if it is at July Fontana with me rowing gears.
But I will stay cautiously optimistic :)
To be honest I'm not as concerned with traction, the car has always launched great on the street and unprepped events like the speed stop challenge.

Not to rain on your parade, but you have the hp and weight for mid 10's, you just don't have the right car. It's no different than getting your car to handle right, it takes proper spring rates, tuning, and driver experience. See you this weekend!

Yes and no.. if the car hooks it hooks.. sure, it can be made to launch better.. Look at Rons Mustang, it's as Pro-Touring as it gets and he did it with no changes and on hard tires.

The 3 link is not the best for pre loading the suspension, but those tires WORK and can make up for that at these levels, I have been low 1.30 short times already on 345 / 18 DRs. Being a manual trans, not much drag race experience in that car and tune suspension time with the car, I like 10.80 at a high MPH for the ET, 128MPH. I bet I could get 10.50s out of it in a afternoon.
For reference, my street drag car put 414HP to the tires, is 3550LBS and runs 10.70s on motor consistently.

Didn't run today.. took advantage of the offer from Hotchkis to let me run in thier private autocross.. got around 8+ runs in.. we kept knocking out bumb to reduce understeer and when we hit zero (it was way better) they determined I needed lighter springs, which I had brought so we took out the 600s and put in some 550s..
Tomorrow we start messing with shock settings again.. it's such a pain.
Heard the drag strip is slick... The Centerforce Camaro ran a 12.2 at 117 ... tomorrow should be cooler which will help drag grip.. Should be fun.

Yep, it was hot.. the track prep was "eh".. sorta slippery.. no changes to the car's suspension, just toss on the drag radials...
But.. you guess was off a bit :)
I'm car 302:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/07/2cr94b9-1.jpg
Well... first time for BP on the drag strip today.. went great.. first pass I smoked up the clutch (sorry Will) and the second pass in the True Street deal I ran an 11.478 at 124.82... considering the track was a bit slippery and it was hot I'm pretty happy with that. I made no changes to the car (no shock softening, etc).. had a full ...tank of 91.. only adder was a set of MT drag radials (running at 18lbs). The 68 beat the 2010 that Will was driving from Centerforce (sorry again Will) but he put in a valiant effort.. either way we both win since I'm running a Centerforce clutch. Also won the Media shootout with the fastest time of all the magazines in attendance.. That should be good for bragging rights for awhile. Best part of day was driving 120mph on the banked NASCAR oval next to a Boss 302 driven by Evan Smith, Editor of Muscle Mustangs and Fast Fords.. epic!
I should also note that part of this race was that the cars had drive for 30-40 minutes without being shut off.. that included idleing for 10-15 and the rest driving the NASCAR oval.. after that no hoods could be opened and nothing done to the car besides letting air out of the car. After the 40 min drive the car got to sit for 15 minutes and the each car made three back to back drag runs.. My times were 11.6, 11.4, 11.6 .. My best 60ft time was a 1.702 but I flubbed it on the big end. So, I'm pretty damn happy right now and my car is getting a full detail when it gets home for not letting me down! Thanks to all the helped and for those the cheered me on at the track.
Now to figure out who who the guessing game!

Well, this seems to be the closest.. anyone contest?
I will say I bet there's high 10s in here with better air (someone mentioned it would out to be like 5,000 feet).. and more practice.. hitting the gears (keeping the revs up) is a challenge as is doing the burnout without a line lock and with the manual trans.. had fun, will be over at the autocross tomorrow.
Did the Baer speed/stop deal.. did good and won a second place prize (couldn't be the ABS Ford GT) and did bad and melted a set of tires (won a prize for that too).. good times!

I was driving.. when I get some pics and vid I will post..
It was hot, and I don't have a lot of experience driving a stick on the drag strip (although I think I did pretty well).. add in some sketchy traction and I think there's 10s in the car.. maybe deep 10s if all the stars align.. especially if I actually tried to set the suspension for drag. But in the end I'm happy with a mid 11 in my PT car.. and autocross/road track is more fun. :)

3600 lbs? How did that thing get so heavy with all of those carbon bits on it?

If you can get a MUCH better 60 foot with that MPH, and keep the mo going through the 330 you'd be MUCH faster. The track wasn't that bad yesterday, a hell of a lot better than the PSCA event .

Very respectable Steve. Thats a mid 10 mph, so she's making power. Nice to see our pride and joys getting used hard. What it's all about. The track and air temp/quality makes a huge diff in a na motor. I went through the same deal Friday here on the east coast. Was damn hot and humid and saw some big$$ cars off their normal et by 3-4 tenths & 3-4mph.

The carbon hood, trunk and all of that was just put on for SEMA.. Penny is all steel except the inner fender wells.. So 200 lbs for me make her 3400 with 100 lbs of fuel.. so 3300 dry.. at one point she was 3185 but I added tunes and a fire system and a few other parts.

4000-4500 feet depending on who's gizmo you looked at.. I didn't think traction was that bad, but others that race all the time were complaining. I on the other hand could use more practice.. and maybe a line lock. :)

I think that is a very respectable performance. You would probably pick up a couple of tenths for better air and cooler track, and a couple more for lots of practice. I would bet it has 10s in it just the way it sets.
It is so hard to get a stick shift, low sitting, stiff suspension pro touring car down the track, and the more power you add the worse it is. I tried to start a thread over on another forum about who had the quickest time on hard street tires. I would love to see that thread over here. Guys with blowers and turbos can make up some time on the second half, but the first 120 feet is where all the hay is made.

10's will be hard with a 125 trap speed and a manual transmission.

Definitely the easiest way would be to lighten the car. Those fancy carbon fiber parts you had on there at sema would probably go a long way. Still, for his first try, he knocked out a 11.47, I think there is easily two or three tenths just in conditions and launch technique.

Steve,
You should figure out where you lost 120HP!

That's like telling a guy with a drag car why he ran such a slow time around an autcross. Pretty respectable for his first time out. IMO

10s should be hard.. they are 10s.. set the car up for drag (adjust the suspension, soften shocks, hook up rear bar, disconnect front, etc).. practice my launch, heating the tires and shifts and 10s shouldn't be a big problem on a good track with decent air.
Happy with the run considering it's only the 4th time down the quarter miles and aside from the tires it's set the exact same way I drive and autocross.
And why all the negative vibes? Go hug a kitten or something ;)

Pssshhhh ,,Hey a little cooler conditions, little better track, good clutch I am sure you would improve what you have already run.. I know that is not what the car was intended for but that 11.4xx out of the box is a Goooooood number for a "Autocrosser" ,,

Steve I was forced to dig out my time slips,I was suprised to see my 60fts weren't as bad as I thought, I drove out and then nailed it, and still had 1.7's 60ft times(for some reason I thought they were mid 2's). Remember I made 20 passes that day, think it was my 4th or 5th pass before I broke into the tens. All my passes were 129mph or more though, don't really know what that means, but I am going to try some drag radials and see how she does. Its funny how you look at that data hoping to find the magic combo.
The cool thing about these cars, they may not be the abosolute best at any racing, but they are pretty damn good at all of them. I wonder what a Winston Cup type car would run in the quarter?

Yea, a PT car has a much better chance at the drags than a drag car has on the autocross or road track..
I think a lot of it has to do with track conditions and air.. and how the car is driven.. you certainly kicked some ass.. would be fun to run against you sometime and one of them fast back east tracks ;)

It means that you have a higher power to weight ratio than Steve. Since you say your motor is a stock LS7 with a cam, then I assume that it is much lighter that Bad Penny.
It sounds crazy, but the trap speed doesn't vary much with off the line traction. If you get some traction, you will drastically reduce your e.t. but not change the trap speed much. Obviously, you can't just be skating all the way down the track, or you are wasting alot of acceleration distance. Speed is pretty much an indicator of power to weight.

Yea, a faster 60-ft will help the ET.. but it's hard with a stick since you can loose MPH in the shifts. On my one test and tune run I thought I could hold 3rd through the lights.. instead my fuel cut off hit and I went to third gear.. 12.2 at 105.. In the event I flubbed a 2-3 shift and ran 11.6 at 119mph.. you get the idea. Plus I'm sure I was down some HP due to the air which was about 4000+ feet. The heat really hurt the blown cars like the Centerforce Camaro..
I work her into the 10s eventually.. for now I'll wear my 11.4 with pride..

Dude, low 11's isn't anything to sneeze at....very respectable. BTW, there probably isn't alot of fat to trim in the 1.7 60'er, maybe a little, but that is hooking fairly well for a tightly suspended camaro. I say... "you did good".

It's amazing to me how much "stuff" I accumulate in my job, more than happy to pass it along. :)
BTW.. the Summit bag "thingy" is a tool roll up pouch.. fill it with wrenches and such then roll it up to put in the car, etc... or it's a tiny fender cover, either way ;)

Density Altitude kicked your butt, no doubt. That car will go 2-3 mph faster and easily 2-3 tenths quicker if you find a sea level altitude track with 50-60F temps. The 1.70 60' time is not bad at all for the handling suspension. My old Camaro went 10.60s at high 120s with 550 rwhp and about the same weight as yours. The main difference was I was on slicks and a solid axle, cutting 1.4X short times with the wheels up. With practice and a good track, you'll hit 1.6X short times on those tires. The best part is that practicing is fun.

All considered I was happy.. still want the 10.x time slip though :) -- I need to come to one of them fast Texas tracks! First time out and first time for me running a fast stick shift car.
Driving the NASCAR oval was the best though.. someone just sent me this picture:
