Besides the obvious of having 6 gears vs 5 gears what are the reasons guys go with a 6 speeds over a 5 speeds. My foucs here is on Tremec only.

Is it for max cruising potential (example: being able to run 80 mph at only 2000 rpm's)??

Is it for image (hey I have a 6 speed)?

Gear selection ( 1 thru 6)?

Torque?

Other?

Just looking for feedback/opinions of why someone would go 6 speed over 5 speed.

Any feedback would be appreciated. Thank, Scott

My friend has 3.23 out back and at 100mph in the 6th the RPM is only 2200!!!
Thats with a 275/45/17 rear....

at 100mph in the 6th the RPM is only 2200!!!

You won't use 6th gear on the track. The 0.5 gear ratio simply won't work there unless your vehicle is going 190+.

What RPM will it be at a useful speed (say 70 mph)? Will your engine be happy cruising at such an RPM-level?

If not, the 0.82 overdrive of the TKO is likely a better choice, especially if your engine is designed for mid or high RPM power.

4th Gen LS1 Camaros actually top out in 5th gear (162mph), rather than 6th, so like John said, I don't think 6th would play a big part up top until you're REALLY going fast. I'm going with the T56 for strength though(G-force upgraded - 900hp rating).

but 6th is awsome for cruising on the freeway, no power but it really wants to coast. If u need to get somewhere 5th is always there. In most cars that have v8's, that i have driven, u barely need to touch the gas on the freeway or in anycase to maintain speed. On the freeway with the t56 u barely let ur foot rest on the pedal in 6th and ur cruising...
