That has to be the dumbest and most unsafe place I have seen something like that done. Top floor of a parking garage with huge concrete barriers. And no helmets.

Yeah, first thing I thought of. Second thing I noticed was the nice body roll...:)

I wonder if the computer can beat a human driver in the same car?

I would say for it to be good and competitive, it would still be a long time coming. With all of the corrections that you have to make on any given course, it would be a lot for a computer to do. Most of these systems are reactive and work on a correction based logic, they're not proactive, like all good drivers are.

Wait until the suspension works in tandem with self driving..

I think not...Most chess experts said computers would never beat a human grand master. That milestone went down in 1997. Many others said that computers would never master the nuances of human language. Watson destroyed human challengers in Jeopardy just this year.

I'm with Carl. Maybe not yet, but they will. If you want to read about a vision of where technology is going, check out Ray Kurzweil's "The Singularity is Near".

Google already recieves all sorts of grants. This is going to be another realm for them.

It's legal in Nevada now.. the door is open.

We can't exactly ride horses on the street anymore. By law or by culture, user driven cars will be phased out.

By law or by culture, user driven cars will be phased out.I agree. The future of human-driven cars will go the route of horses, where we drive cars for show and competition, but rarely for transportation.

The taxes levied against you will do that.

A further note about Google. From my perspective, they are not entering the automotive industry as it appears. They are expanding their role in the surveillance and data collection industry.

Self driving cars are another mode of tracking, tracing and databasing your information. Google receives a lot of grants in conjunction with the NSA making them a public front for that agency. This is another level of tracking our information and transportation, which is valuable to governments and useful in regards to the possibly of by the mile user taxes that have been proposed, and so on. So it's no surprise that govt will subsidize these sorts of adventures as they are potentially useful tools for them and profitable to Google.
