View Full Version : Track Day! Buttonwillow / NCRC Sept. 17-18

The NCRC is putting on a two-day HPDE at Buttonwillow Raceway Park on Sept. 17-18. I'm going, along with a few Corvette friends. I'm not sure if I'll go for one or both days, but the price is very appealing. $99 for each day. That's a bargain.

So, who's up for burning some gas and tires?

Oh yeah, I'm in on this one. Likely both days. From the chats I've been having we might have a good shot at putting together a nice group for this one.
Todd?
Gaetano?
Chad?

We got 3 months to get our shiat together. Let's make it happen.
Carl - which run group will you be signing up for?

Update: Registered for Saturday and Sunday. First time at Buttonwillow, so I plan to start out in Solo and probably move up to Point-By sometime in the weekend. Looking forward to ripping it up with you guys!

Here is a Buttonwillow pic because all threads are better with pictures!!

Dave, to add to your list I think Larry has been making noise about wanting to get Motiv8er out to Buttonwillow. Given he is always tinkering with his motor, hopefully this gives him enough time to have the car sorted for a track day!
EDIT: I'll also throw down the guantlet. Jon, you have plenty of notice! Get that Nova ready! Brett, time to fab a roll bar! :)

Sooo tempting. But as it always seems, this event has a conflict. My Oldest turns 11 on 09/18. The party is set for the 17th. I will have to see if I can just make it for Sunday. hhhmmmmmm.

Aside from that NCRC is $65 cheaper.
BTW Carl, I have a pair of used 275/40 17 Toyo R888's laying around I'd let go for cheap. Tread is at about 50% and they are fairly new. You'ld have to come up with another pair but if your interested PM me.

Gaetano,
Thanks for the offer, but I'm sticking with tires I can drive in the rain comfortably. At least six times in the last year I was driving in some pretty heavy rain.
I know that there are at least three others coming. If we can get 15-20 cars we may be able to negotiate something where we all run in the same group. Getting our own group may be tough, but it should be doable to have us all run together (if you all want to.) If anyone has connections with NCRC........

Rob, it's not in the budget to take two trips down south this year. Right now I'm thinking I'm going to skip July but if things turn before then I still might go. I'll keep you posted.
I remember you mentioned you wanted your wife to ride with me. Is she going to be at the September event? Let me know, this will be more of a social event rather than a competitive gig so I want to be sure I save her a spot if she wants.

Dave, I ran for the first time with NCRC earlier this year. Their online registriation limits you if you are brand new but you can put comments in your registration submittal which is what I did. I asked for a higher up group (with explanation of my experience) and got an email pretty quick saying I was in. No big deal.

I think it's too early to determine the driving school requirements for future RTTX events, but likely the newbie course offered by NCRC, SV, etc. won't cut it.
Don't know Jon. You may want to contact NCRC, or check out their website. It has a system next to the event that sort of shows space availability.
Aaron, it's a driving class with classroom sessions between rounds. Sounds like there's going to be at least 3-4 from our group in the class so you will be in good company. Out of the five sessions, the first 2-3 will be ducks-in-a-row no passing. After that they will let you loose with very strict rules for passing. It's a great way to learn even though for the ducks sessions you will be itching to go faster. BTW, your parts mailed out today. The way USPS has been working lately, you may have it tomorrow.

For me:

Ditching the GSD3's for something stickier and more predictable
Better Brake Fluid (not all DOT4's are created equal apparently)

I do have a trans selected in theory and am working 2 sources right now for the best combo of price, ratios and input shaft spline count. It is a 4 speed and can be shifted clutchless. Can't wait for that.
And yes to mods planning for this event as well!
Engine oil cooler/heat exchanger
Pedal adjustment/modding for proper heel-toe
New trans and clutch disc

Depending on $ maybe a fire suppression system

More like a 1/4 mile. Just ask them for a Speed venture discount even though we will be with NCRC. Should work. We usually get there around 4:00 p.m. and then get some dinner. Any organization is going to frown on a modification done incorrectly. If you still have stock seat belts you are legal.(At least in point by group as far as I know) If you begin a modification, you need to complete that modification.

Damn, I want to go to this, sounds like fun. I need to figure out a temporary harness bar or roll bar so I can have a 4 point harness.
Would be great if you can make it Mike.
Does the NCRC frown on 5-point harnesses with no harness/roll bar? I know they *should* frown on it, but do they? Wouldn't want to show up and not be able to run because of them.
FWIW here is NCRC's tech form: http://www.ncracing.org/docs/tech.pdf

As far as safety goes, you guys really need to use your heads. Self tech is an easy way in/out(however you want to look at it) but dont fool yourselves and take short cuts. Also, it would be nice for those of you using radiator coolant in your cars to switch to straight water with a bottle of water wetter. If any of you guys overheat, spilling radiator fluid on the track will make it very slippery. In addition, bring or borrow a torque wrench and re-torque your wheels before every session!!
Point by group is typically pretty mellow and there will be down load sessions(meetings) after every session to discuss your on track experience and any potential morons that may not be following the rules. I know it's kind of nerve racking for you guys that have not had alot of track time but realize there will be alot of others standing in your shoes, and I mean alot!!
I typically run open group and have already offered up a few rides but I have made alot of recent changes to my car so I will probably run the first two sessions solo just to be sure she's still handling the same and hopefully better rather than worse then before.

If more people dont sign up for open class I may run point by for a couple of sessions but I've been down that route before. Point by to me is more challenging than open due to the amount of unexperienced drivers in that group. Lets just say you need to pay a bit more attention to what the other driver is doing.

I think solo is point by with passing in the straights only and point by is a point by anywhere. Either way it will be a great experience for all and an opportunity to find your comfort zone.
Now that i think about it open class is best for tires with tread wear at 100 or less so hopefully you guys should be in good shape.
I just hope to bring my car back the same as it arrives. I always get a little nervous after making changes. The turn in with the vette wheels up front is way faster and the grip of the 315's in the rear twists the car up a bit. I'm still working on dialing it in and am going to rebuild the front end for this event....new ball joints, tie rod ends, and new lower control arms.(replacing the stock lowers with tubulars) Then I'm going to spend a little time adjusting the watts link. Going to try and drop the pivot a couple notches to see if I can loose the torque twist.
If the car continues to twist I'll be going back to the 275's in the rear.

Found out I was using the wrong SD card. I finally got a good video last week. Attatched the GoPro underneath my car to get a vid of the watts link while I was driving. Serious stock as in 307 with a 2 barrel, wait I have dual flow masters so I guess I have a chance haha...
I pretty much figure that at least with the suspension I would be able to not get myself into trouble with the power I have but really I have not been to one of these events but I have be involved in many other forms of racing and on a track with a under powered car vs a guy having power looking to stay in his grove was the part I was not sure of, as in how many cars at a time and classes they group together. I haven't looked into it much. I am geared for a 5 speed right now and still running the T350 3speed so she revs pretty good that little 307 spins being nice and loose. I have been driving her on the highway at easy 75-80mph and she has not skipped a beat. If you guys really think I could get my feet wet on the track and not be in the way I have never been to Buttonwillow. Not sure of the minimum class safety requirements to know if my car would pass tech for where I would be placed in class. I have a helmet, regular lap belt, do they require 5 point harness?

What kinda speeds are you guys seeing on a track like this?
CarlC
08-08-2011, 06:47 AM
Nick, it is much easier and safer to learn with an underpowered vs. an overpowered car. No worries about getting passed, etc. Everybody gets passed. One must put their ego aside when getting behind the wheel of a fun event. That is part of learning track etiquette.
Track speeds are fully dependant on three things: 1) Corner exit speeds, 2) The power under the hood, 3) The size of your cojones. If you're not comfortable, let off the gas. Nobody will belittle you for being safe as long as you practice proper track etiquette. If someone does, they will get a beatdown from the staff and fellow drivers.
I highly suggest bringing the car and participating. It is not often that we get a group this large at an event like this, so there will be plenty of driving, socializing, and support if needed.

Great!! I kinda like the point of less hp will help me learn faster, makes since 100%.
I am drawn to this sport as I can see even though we all have a competitive side the sport is much more than winner as in position but much more a friendly group of car lovers that at the end of the day its about not breaking and having a good time with your car and other friends. You don't find that much in many other forms of racing.
So what about the class tech requirements that I would have to need? Sorry I have not spent anytime looking any of that up because I really had not planned on having my car at a track day.

You're right on point. For example, Todd and I poke at each other on the forum as a friendly rivalry, but once we're on the track it's a different deal. At the end of the day everyone wants to go home with the car and themselves in one piece.
We are not racing. We are not racing. We are not racing.......
We are all about having fun.
If you are going try to get signed up soon. The classes are filling up fast. NCRC sent an email the other day stating that the groups are filling up due to a large PT group attending :-)
Here's the NCRC tech form.

Well put Carl. We dont want to be racing each other period!!
I think the best way I like to put it is that you race the track to better your lap times. Build your skills and work on maybe one or two corners at a time. Respect all others driving around you.
Hope you make it out, looking forward to the beers, barbeque, and bench racing afterwards!!

Just make sure you get a 2011+ V6 Mustang and avoid the previous lame-sauce 210 HP V6. Rental companies usually have cars from the three most current model years.
The Hertz "Adrenaline" collection offers a Challenger RT, a Camaro SS, and a new 5.0 Mustang.
The 5.0 is $130 a day, but I don't know what fees or taxes they tack on after that.

Hey All. Here is an FYI for you that NCRC has posted just in case you didn't read it.
Starting with September 7 at Thunderhill, we're instituting a new process for Solo group drivers. In addition to the regular driver's meeting, there will be a mandatory meeting after the first track session for discussion of passing and other rules. Solo drivers will receive a temporary tech sticker for their first track session, and the full-day tech sticker at this meeting. Drivers who do not attend this mandatory meeting will not get on the track for subsequent sessions. The intent of this meeting is to address common complaints from the group, typically regarding passing and pointing drivers by.
Hell, I may just rent a 5.0 and beat on a Ford for the day. I wonder what the Insurance is???
79-TA
08-10-2011, 10:20 PM
^It seems super affordable. But compared to what other companies rent normal V6 Mustangs for (about the same), it seems like there must be some onslaught of fees they tack on.

Make sure to read rental car contract thoroughly. I believe it's Budget who has a policy about not covering things within x-amount feet from a race track etc and given how easy it is to navigate the internet, it's pretty easy for the insurance co's to find out where you were
and if i make it i'll most likely be in my '02 Camaro SS

Meant to throw up an answer for this before. Like anything in life it depends. However, to give you a reference point my ZZ4 powered Camaro (355 hp 405 tq) hits speeds around the track as follows:
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/04/23346894036_large-1.jpg
And as usual I use any chance I can to relive the glory and share a track video. This is a single lap at buttonwillow which has speeds shown on the video. The video is shaky mostly due to the camera phone setup I using to record rather than the track or car.

I was running in a group with "point by" passing only, which is how *most* track organizers handle passing. This means that you are not to pass the car in front of you with out a clear point by signal from the driver. A clear signal is usually a straight left arm out the window to the left indicating to pass on the left or pointing to the right over the roof to pass on the right.
Point by passing was only allowed in the "straights" that day. The vette did take a while to let me by. General rule of thumb is if there is a car in your rear view mirror he's faster than you and let them by. Interesting to note that on that same day the vette gave me point by's in the corner. I could of safely passed but chose to follow the rules and waited for a straight.
CarlC
08-11-2011, 09:25 PM
I had similar observations. The driver should have made a clear and concise gesture for the pass, not just a finger over the door. It gives the aft driver clear knowledge of the intent.
It is always better to wait than to take a chance in the no-pass zone. The wrath of the organizers will come down, and bent metal is never fun.

Did a tune day at Thunderhill yesterday. 1st session car drove like a bus. Did point by's in advanced group for 5 laps and finally got frustrated and brought it in to the paddock. First run was with 210 lb buddy in passenger seat but his weight certainly wasn't the issue. 2nd session I drove by myself but things certainly were not better. I got lucky and parked next to a fully equipped tractor trailor pulled race car team that helped me re-adjust toe and camber. We had to custom make shims to even out the camber. I missed two sessions working on the car but the last session definitely showed impovement. I still need to add more negative camber and the new Global West lower control arms raised the front of the car another 1 1/4". Definitely felt it at the end of the straight at close to 140 mph.
Going to make some adjustments and hit one more track day before Buttonwillow.
The Vette wheels with 2" spacers and Global West lower control arms certainly changed feel of the car quite a bit up front but the watts link is dialed and did its job well.
If I get time I'll post vids. Big difference from first run to last.

Very nice Gaetano. Nice to see the improvements working for you. Shocked about the height being rasied. Waiting for the vids.
I was a little surprised about the height change also. I'm pretty sure it had to do with the poly spring base that came with the lower arms but I will confirm that hopefully sometime this week. After rechecking height tonight it looks like they may have compressed a bit but I am typically 23 1/2" from floor to fender lip and now I have 24 1/2" on passenger side and 24" on driver side.
I also think the 2" spacers and vette wheels up front are putting to much pressure on the spindle, hub, and bearings. With the Torque Thrusts I felt like I could throw the car around with confidence. Now it definitley doesn't feel as comfortable in the corners up front as it did before. Its not that it's not sticking, it just feels like it's working harder which is taking away from my confidence level to push harder.
Might be time to throw the Torque Thrusts back on. At least up front anyways.

Chopped the springs, dropped the front, and now she looks like she is wear she needs to be. Just need to swap the Toyo's back on to the Torque Thrusts, change engine and trans fluids, and I should be ready for Buttonwillow.
So who all left is still going?

The suit came with all of the patches. Each one must be worth a second or two.
Me too Mary. Just wish I had more time on SOWS instead.

I'm out for Sunday folks. My boys are starting their Fall baseball season this Friday and it looks like my Friday's and Sunday's will be takin' up for a while.
Dont know what time Friday night I will be showing up yet, but it looks like it could be way later than typical.
If anyone is interested in taking my half of Dave Gordon and I's garage spot for Sunday let me or Dave know. It will be up for grabs for $37.50

One week to go. Who's still in?
If all goes as planned I'll arrive at the track Friday mid-afternoon to unload and set up.

I'm still in. I'll miss my kids 3rd and 4rth baseball practice but I've worked it out to where I should show around 4:00 p.m on Friday and will be able to stick it out for part of Sunday.

Will be cocked and loaded. Can't wait to get the skeaky pete nitrous kit installed for those few straights.
Probably also looking at 4-5pm arrival on Friday at the track and get set up.

You're not kidding. It's a good thing this can go back on the helmet.
