View Full Version : Rear Disc Brake Setup for a Lowered G-Body

I need to find a solution here. I am running the factory 7.5 rear, with drum brakes. Up front I have and LS1 setup, stock master, booster and prop valve.
I am lowered about 3" in the rear and would like to keep the use of my parking brake. What sort of setup can I use back there?

Bump. It looks like the LS1's are a good option for the rear too.... but I don't know about in a lowered situation.

Maybe I'm stupid or something, but how does it make a different if it is lowered or not? The brakes are inside the wheel. I have sortof of a home made put together setup using BAER brackets & the LT1 style F body calipers & Vette rotors. I had to relocate the shocks, but other than that no problem. Rear is lowered maybe 2".

Yeah, Scot I don't get it either... you know how rumors go.
Do you have any pics of your setup?

I'm just going to order this kit. The LS1 uses a 10.7 rotor. This uses a 10.5 and is 'bolt on' to the flange, and uses the existing parking brake cable. So I'm good there...

That kit should work for you. the only issue I can think of with lowered cars is if the inner wheelhouse is too close to the back of the caliper. On my 81 Camaro, the S10 calipers clear the inner wheelhouse but LS1 calipers are real close and possibly even hit.
If I remember correctly, doesn't your rear axle have the 3-bolt flange instead of the 4-bolt? If so then the LS1 brakes won't bolt on. The flange can be modified for them to work though. BTW LS1 rear rotors are closer to 12", not 10.7" per parts listings on Rock Auto.

Hmm. Spacecoast on ebay sells their rear LS1 kits all the time and they told me the rotor size was 10.7 when I asked if it was 11"? I didn't feel like hacking up the housing for the LS1's though... I think the kit I ordered should be plenty of stopping power for my intended use. Hopefully everything clears.

For anyone wanting to run 4th Gen F-body rear discs on a G-body rear, its not that bad. You have to cut the u-shaped part off the housing, and drill a couple holes using the e-brake backing plate as a template, but thats not too hard or time consuming. The shocks need to be moved slightly inboard, too...the brackets on the rearend are normally beefy enough that this ins't a big deal, and the change in geometry is negligible. Getting the e-brake cables worked out is the worst part.

I got this kit delivered the other day, and stamped on the "Summit Kit" calipers is SSBC. :) I checked the same SSBC kit and it was over $300 more!
I also measured the diameter of the rotor and its 11" even. Everything is 'bolt on', which I like and it uses the existing parking brake setup. I think this is the way to go instead of the heavy fab work. It's going to add some weight to the rear axle though.. maybe 40lbs or so?

Glad you got it worked out. For future reference Speedway Motors sells a bunch of "metric chassis" (g-body) parts including brake kits. The kit I'm looking at has 11.75" rotors and is about $240, but there's no e-brake provision. They do sell kits with e-brakes too, but a little more spendy.

Yeah it didn't add up for me.. those metric calipers look pretty weak too, IMO. Plus I need a parking brake with the hills around here. I like that it uses the factory one already in place.
I'm really happy with the looks of the kit I got. It's supposed to go on Weds nite but I need a compressor on my truck so we'll see what happens. I'll update my thread when the set goes on.

post pics of the set up when you finish installing them pleeease. I have a set of rear C6 calipers and rotors i want to use but havent found a kit that would allow me to retain the parking brake. I only found the bracket from Flynbye to mount the brakes but e-brake doesnt work. So if i cant figure it out them looking for other options.

Ditch the Vette rotors for LS1 rotors and abutment brackets, you can put the C6 calipers on the LS1 abutments. This will allow you to use the LS1 internal parking brake, and the LS1 rotors are as big as the C5/C6 rears anyway.
