View Full Version : Another cooling fan question (I've done my searching)

CAMAROBOY69 Now has me worried, it might be unfounded but it’s a cheap fix to be sure I don’t have any problems down the road :dunno:

I have an aftermarket electric fan on my car right now, and while it has not over heated yet (I only have 75 miles on the car so far) I did end up having to sit through a few stop lights on my way home yesterday and the temp crept up to around 200-205 deg or so.
As soon as I started moving it went back down around 185 deg.

Now that the car is drivable I am able to upgrade the fan just to stay on the safe side.

I have two options I’ve looked into today, (I've just spent 2hrs in front of the computer running searches on various forums) a dual 4th gen LT1 Fan and of course the Mark VIII fan. I know you guys think the Mark VIII rules, but will the LT1 Duals be enough for me? (I found the LT1 for $125 and the LS1 for $75 at a local yard) Anyone know the difference between the LT1 and LS1 Fans, I know the shroud is different, but does one work better than the other?

I have looked at rockauto and they list two different part numbers for the Mark VIII fans, 97 lists a RF56 and 98 lists a RF64.. Which one do I want if I go that route?
Does anyone know if both years take the same pigtail? Motorcraft webpage lists pigtail number WPT-362 for the 97 but don’t list one for the 98..

I know I would need a 70 AMP Relay for the Mark VIII. Anyone know what sizes the LT1 requires?

Yup you definetly need a more powerful fan. Thats the ultimate test for the cooling system is to just let the car sit in 80+ weather for about 10 minutes. If temp keeps rising, you need a new fan like you said.

I honestly dont think there is much out there for the price that pulls air thru like the Mark VIII. I think the Mark VIII pulls somewhere around 4,000+CFM!! As someone said in another post on this site "That fan is so powerful it will pull small childern thru the radiator" :lmao:
Im not sure what the

I guess I would compare the LT1 and LS1 CFM to the Mark VIII. If it is close and you can get the LS1 for only $75 then I would go that route.

To answer your last question. I beleive the 98 RF64 is the one you want.

Well no one seems to know the CFM rating on the LT1 or LS1 fans and I found a 98 Mark VIII fan setup for $100 (used) so I guess I'll pick that up.

If my temps don't stay at 185 after the swap I'll be looking for ya CAMAROBOY69 :box: ..................and demand a ride in your car :)

I found the relay HERE (http://www.jcwhitney.com/autoparts/Product/showCustom-0/Pr-p_Product.CATENTRY_ID:2001332/c-10101/Nty-1/p-2001332/Ntx-mode+matchallpartial/N-10101/tf-Browse/s-10101/Ntk-AllTextSearchGroup?Ntt=70%20relay)

and they have two, with and without a bracket (tab on top of relay to place a mounting screw) the prices are $8.99 and $9.99

Or THIS PLACE (http://www.weisd.com/store2/nterly/R51-1D70-12F.html) for $7.41

Well I got my fan today, I went ahead and threw it on there.
My relay should be here Thursday so I'll find out this weekend what temp she will run at.
Here's the old fan and the new fan :headbang:
I also noticed how old the first picture is, I didn't have marker lights, hood pins, I had the old Demon carb and probably a few more changes :candle:

hahah That is just awesome! Look at those two pics. No comparison at all. NEW FAN :hah:old fan.
Oh just make sure you wire it the correct direction. One direction pulls and one pushes if I remember correctly. You will know as soon as you wire it. Very easy to wire.

Well I took the car out today..
I let it sit in the drive way at an idle, took it on the highway, let it cruise at about 2000RPM's, sit in the driveway again...
It is 95deg out and the car never got above 180deg.
This fan rules! :bananna2:
