View Full Version : Can a serp belt spin a dry sump oil pump?

I know that the usual setup uses a toothed belt to spin an oil pump for a dry sump setup. I figure that was because the V belt setup that old cars have was just not up to the task of that but are modern serpentine belts able to make enough friction to run one? I was looking at a black el camino that was I believe Spectre built. It has an LS motor set back way thru the firewall and it was running a dry sump. I looked at the setup and could not find the oil pump but it only had the serp belt. It may have been a Z06 motor but I do not know how those run the pumps either.
Im building my car to use a 5.7 hemi and i just cannot figure out a way to add the toothed belt so I would really like to just run the serp belt over it. I could route the belt around that pulley so it could have 280 or so degrees engaged on the belt, I just do not know if that will be enough

The LS7 motor has a pump driven off the crank directly just like all the other modern motors out there but with a two stage pump for the dry sump. I doubt a serpentine is enough for a dry sump. Is there a reason you want the trouble of a dry sump in a mopar?

I could really use the clearance under the motor with all the other stuff I want to do, 180 degree headers being one of them. I also just want the benefits of running a dry sump
Edit: I wanted to add that my idea was to use the stock oil pump to lube up the motor, let the oil come down and be picked up by a 2 stage pump then pushed back to the tank. The tank would then lead to the stock pump

Can't seem to find them now, but I'm pretty sure that the now defunct ASA racers used a vacuum stage on the factory serpentine belt of an LS1. There used to be parts on ebay, but it looks like they've finally dried up.

Awesome, thanks. That place is using a smaller serp belt than OE, i think it just may be possible to run my 2 stage scavenge pump like that

I'd want a dedicated belt in the event of a locked up accessory or one coming loose. I had an alternator come loose in the Optima Challenge and it was ready to shred the belt. You lose that belt, you lose your engine. Unless you plumb an oil pressure switch into the ignition system.

That is a worry, though with the pressure pump on the engine still, you'll only get into real trouble once the tank runs out. So depending on tank size (some setups go 3-5 gals, though if I recall correctly, they fill them about 2/3rds full) , maybe some kind of tank gauge and a warning light would be sufficient.

Yeah, an idiot light will for sure be onboard. Im not sure but with these new fangled computer controlled motors, they will shut down before they get hurt. The ecm will know what kind of oil pressure it has so hopefully it has a fail safe. If i were to run a low pressure light, i could also use that to kill the motor. Maybe a relay that would cut the power from the ignition switch
