pontiac muscle and ponycars where the only cars till 79 with a 455 in them that still pulled stripes on the streets AND pass smog.

witch reminds me the modern corvette hase its origen from the pontiac Banshee, a car delorean was not alouwed to take in production for pontiac. chevy did 1 year later!!!! and called it the corvette.. the list is a mile long.
in the end GM was known for its NON SENSE disisions witch resulted in killing of great brands and fell douwn into a midium joker company. killing of Pontiac and saving BUICK because they are build in china and sell so wel overthere is a good thing huh. ore make Cadilac the NEW high perf division??????. witch Pontiac used to be.. seems to me that chevy was and stil is the RED HEADED Step child that needed to be kept alive at al costs nesersary what a joke.... There was no GM factory support for Firebird in the Trans Am series. Pontiac didn't have a 5.0 litre engine in production, so the car wasn't easy to get in the series. There was a loophool that allowed Firebirds to run the Chevy 302, but the Titus Firebird from '68, was actually converted from a Camaro. This Firebird was actually doing a fine job of "kicking the schmidt" out of Mark's Camaro at Pacific Raceway in 1968 . . . until its CHEVROLET engine blew up. ; )

It would have been faster, quicker, better handling, and cheaper than the "flagship" Corvette. and I believe the Banshee was being developed separately from the Corvette. It would have been smaller and cheaper than the vette, which was one of the reasons GM management canned it. They didn't want this to cannibalize vette sales. Vettes already had independant supsension by the time the Banshee was built and you can see a lot of the c3 body style influence from the Mako Shark 2 concept car, much more so than the Banshee. I do agree that GM management didn't like it when Pontiac out performed Chevy, and they did that a lot.
