I hope this is the place for this. I wanted to find out from those more experienced. Please move this if I put it in the wrong place and accept my appology.
I sold a T-56 here in the for sale. Went to drop it off at UPS and they want $1000.00 to ship it. I have it boxed in a nice box and it is stackable. They said if it is just strapped to a pallet it would be way more.
My question is how do you others who have sold large heavy items been able to ship your items? Who would be the best, safest and cheapest way to get a trans across the country? Any help would be appreciated. Because I misquoted the buyer a shipping price, and the more I can keep this cost down, the more I redeem on the transaction. I am dropping it off to where ever I can, and it will be delivered to a Automotive Shop (Business).

Also try Daylight Transport, we use them here at work and their rates are far lower than FedEd/UPS.

Put JetEx on your list. The call center is in Texas but they do logistics for the nation and great pricing too!!

Dont use Fedex they dont stand behind there quotes. They will shoot you a super low price then when the customer on the other end goes to pay the bill they jack the rates and say they quoted you not the guy on the other end who is really paying the bill.Even when you have already told them it was frt. collect.DO NOT EVEN USE FEDEX.unless you pay the bill up front, and have the driver sign the bill of lainding paid in full.

If you are sending a t56 following these instructions from Tick Performance - you should be able to ship for ~$100

Purshasing, Packaging and Shipping your T56

Packaging and Shipping your heavy transmission seems like a big chore. Why? Because until now, it was a big chore! We here at Tick Performance have streamlined the packaging and shipping process to make your transmission rebuilding experience as easy as possible. If you've already seen our package pricing and you're ready to have your T56 rebuilt, below is a general overview of the purchasing, packaging and shipping process:

1. Remove your T56 from the car and visit your local Wal*Mart or comparable department store. Purchase a 45 gallon Sterilite or Rubbermaid-type container. You will also need plenty of packaging tape and material if you don't already have them. (NOTE: Corvette transmissions require a 50 gallon container)
2. Remove your shifter, bellhousing, crossmember, vent tube, torque arm mount and slave cylinder from your T56.
3. Drain your T56 of all fluid.
4. Line the bottom and sides of your container with packaging material. In our experience, it is best to keep at least 6" of material on each side, including the bottom and top.
5. Insert your T56 into the container and begin to fill it with packing material. The idea is to package the transmission as tight as possible to insure that it doesn't move! The more loose the transmission is in the container, the more chance you take of it being damaged during shipping.

I've got a hood to ship and was wondering the same thing. Tried greyhound but it exceeds their size limit. It's 56 x 64 x 11 and weighs 80 lbs... So its big but not heavy

Try a different shipper .
UPS has really raised their rates lately because of fuel surcharges ..
FEDEX has raised theirs too ..

Bound to be some truck carriers listed in the local yellow pages...start calling and see what they will ship a #150 pallet for to a business. Can't imagine that it would cost more than $100...I bought a Viper T56 and I don't think the shipper charged me but $100 for shipping and handling and they delivered it right to the door of our shop.

When I bought the hood 5 years ago, it was shipped to me on Greyhound..... the guy that wanted to buy it from me has shipped hoods on Greyhound....... I took it too the station, paid for it etc and then 7 hours later they called and said they couldnt get it on the bus. Then they mentioned the size restriction of 30x47x80....

So it makes no sense to me either........ but according to them, they couldnt get it on the bus.

The box I have it in, isnt much bigger than the hood, They mentioned just wrapping the hood with no box, but that make me very nervous, especially with fiberglass....plus even doing that wont get me close to the posted size restriciton

Just got quotes from them on shipping a skid with T-400 trans/crossmember/convertor from PA to South FL. I forget which carrier was least expensive, but picking up the skid at a local terminal was $281.00. One of the things about shipping trannys is that when they are "used" they fall into a different rate catagory with the trucking companies. Businesses that ship frequently with the same common carrier recieve discounts so it is likely to cost more to return a tranny to a place you bought it from than it cost them to ship it to you. First because it was "new" when shipped and secondly because of their discounts. The new/used thing is probably based on damage claims recieved because businesses gnerally pack things better and there may also be fluid issues that have cost carriers money on used units.
YMMV
