View Full Version : We don't eat no Dominos Pizza here in Michigan......

When people outside our state think of Michigan and Pizza they usually associate us with the 3 major chains that are headquartered here; Dominos, Little Caesars, & Hungry Howies. We recently had some people over the other day from out of state and I heard one of them mention something I’ve heard time and time again; about how us Michiganders must eat a lot of Dominos pizza. This is understandable as Dominos is the number 2 pizza chain in the country and their headquarters is in Ann Arbor. Folks I’m here to tell you…nothing could be further from the truth. We barely eat the stuff. In fact….I couldn’t tell you where there was a Dominos Pizza anywhere near my house and personally the last time I ate a slice I think I was in High School (over 20 years ago).
It probably would surprise a lot of people to know that Dominos, Little Caesars, and Hungry Howies do not reign supreme here in Michigan. Our crown jewel Pizza franchise (at least in the eyes of Metro Detroiters) is Jets Pizza. If there are any other Michigan members in here please feel free to chime in whether you agree or disagree. I can’t think of one Birthday party, Euchre Party, Poker night, or whatever I have been too in the last 20 years where there were boxes of Dominos Pizza on the table instead of Jets. It is almost ALWAYS Jets Pizza.
For you guys in the Midwest you may have a Jets Pizza near you. They have been making their way down south for the past 10 years. A few years ago Roger Poirier and I were in Pigeon Forge for the Run To The Hills event and we almost drove off the road when we saw they had a Jets Pizza in town. That particular one I would later find out is owned by a guy I went to school with…crazy. There are a couple in the Dallas/Fort Worth area as well. And it should be noted that Jets actually serves “Detroit Style” pizza (a square deep dish pizza with a fried crust) where the other chains just serve round.
Anyway….I was bored today and thought I would clear up what I think has become a popular misconception.
The world is now saved. You can all sleep better at night.

I had no preconceptions on what kind of pizza you guys ate, nor had I ever considered the topic. However, I do now perceive you Michiganders as the type I wouldn't want to offend with assumptions of pizza intake. For what it's worth, I hover between Pizza Hut and Papa Johns for delivery.

Yes, for now. It's was my grandpa's place, now run by my parents, who are trying to sell it since they are going to retire. But as of now they're still open and serving. They'll probably close by the end of this year.

I see Domino's Pizza delivery guys/gals running all over town, but I don't think that I have ever eaten one of their pizzas. There are the lil PizzaPizza(little ceasars) drive-ins all over and occasionally we'll go through the drive-thru for a hot and ready for the kids...but if we go out for Pizza, it's Pizza Hut.

If you ever come visit Bloomington Indiana we have a few good Pizza places but my favorite is Avers Chicken Master Piece.
and Ill even brag on the pizza from local Speedway gas station and local Kmart has Little Ceasers 6.99 at Speedway and 5 buck pizza at LC.
A few others local are Swing in Pizza and Monroe County Pizza Dept. Was couple other that were not bad but forget names. Bad thing is Avers has no dine in.
BUT awesome pizza and breadstick count is off the hook.

Well of course it is. But then it depends on what type of pizza we're talking about. There are different variations of pie; NY Style, Chicago Style, California, Detroit Style (yes, there is such a thing). I don't know these places in St. Louis or Indiana or wherever so I don't know what style they serve. Jet's is the only franchise that truly represents the type of pie you can expect to find in Detroit area restaurants.
If you're ever in the Detroit area (and live to tell about it) hit up Loui's, Buddy's, Shield's, or Cloverleaf. Bring your appetite too.

I hate square pizza. It's unnatural.
Also, most major pizza places are good for a generic flavor pizza. Ever since a ma and pa place opened up locally, I can't eat that crap anymore. Their pizza is so much better.

I was born/raised in Indiana for 41 years, Dominos didn't do anything for me, neither does Little Caesars, if I had to pick it would probably be Pap John's. Pizza Hut could close up and go out of business & it wouldn't hurt my feelings a bit. They suck.

I'd agree with you, even the pizzas in the frozen section of your grocer would tend to be better tasting and better for you.
Chain pizza is made as cheap as it can be, I don't even want to think what cheese substitute they are using to keep the price down per pie, yet alone what is passed off to be meat toppings...
Think McDonald's of Pizza-land, where pretty much everything is substituted for some cheaper alternative ingredient that will pass for the original...
Give me a good local pizzeria pie any day.

Hey...you can spend your whole life in one place and not know everything about it or experience all it has to offer. Whether this is by choice or just by chance is unique to each individual.

what is it about pizza that brings out the snobbish/hipsterish tendencies in people?
it's almost as bad as when people start talking about their favorite beers..
if some obscure microbrew would start making handmade pizza , i think the hipsters of the world would all spontaneously implode on themselves..
me, i can't afford to buy precooked pizza, so i get by with either Tombstone, Bernatellos, or DiGiornio frozen pizza. and i don't drink beer..

I gotta hear this, enlighten me.
Most people don't realize that the true Coney Dog originated in Detroit Michigan and is very different from a Chili Dog.
Chili Dog - Artificial casing dog, Cincinatti-style chili, done.
Coney Dog - Steamed bun, natural casing hot dog (grilled, not boiled), Hungarian style coney sauce (not chili), sweet onions, mustard.
Lafayette and American Coney Island in Detroit makes the greatest on the planet and were the first in the nation.

Rockford has a few good pizza places. I like Lino's, Altamores,Maciano's, and if you can afford it Giordanos pan pizza.
Pizza Hut has gone so far downhill that Dominos is probably better now, they don't put any more on them then it takes to look like a pizza. Shakey's used to be in our town but no longer, there is still one in Janesville Wi. but I haven't been there in years. Happy Joe's is good for it's puffy crust if you like pizza like that. I haven't really ever had a Papa Johns pizza that really was bad but they aren't anything to brag about.
For the most part , if you go to a chain it's a hit or miss for a good pizza and the local mom and pop places are the best. I like all kinds of pizza and when I say I don't like a place it has to be really bad. The thing in Rockford that stands out to me is that there are a few cooks that must go from one place to another and if you know where those guys are you will get a good pizza. We had a place that was close and they had good pizza a couple of years ago and then it went to the dogs, they say they have a new cook and it is better now but have you ever noticed how hard it is to go back once they give you a bad one?

Lafayette and American Coney Island in Detroit makes the greatest on the planet and were the first in the nation.
Jackson: beef heart chili without beans. Beef hearts give it a gamey flavor. Not bad, but catches you off-guard if you're expecting a Detroit-style coney.
Flint: chili with enough sauce to be defined as chili and not ground beef
Detroit: chili sauce with more viscosity than standard chili. Lafayette and American were on one of the foodie shows. They said the difference between the two was the type of mustard and onions. I can't tell the difference, but I prefer Lafayette because it's what every coney should be- a greasy, dank pit. A trip to the bathroom isn't for the feint of heart, lol.

I never heard of Jets pizza until about a year ago. I live near the north suburbs of Minneapolis and I would have to agree with you 1000%! Our company buys us pizza for some special event, and the last couple of times, they bought Jets pizza. It is probably the best ever! for those Dominos lovers, choke, choke, they should really find a Jets regardless of how far they are. We only have two here, but i am hoping they oopen more. Everyone should spread the word, and then every city will have a Jet's pizza. Then the other pizza place, should fall, like... well......Dominos!

While we were in Joliet for the Heidts event we had our first Giordanos pizza.
I now have a new standard of excellence for pizza. Girodanos ruled.
That being said- it took forever (an hour wait) and it was expensive. I wanted to be critical of it because I was tired and hungry.
But then it arrived, and was more than I'd hoped it could be. I was humbled, and all my frustrations disappeared with the first slice.
Now I'm just bummed I can't get one here. No chain pizza will ever hold a candle to it.
My favorite of the chain pizzas is still Pizza Hut's pan pizza. I like the deep, thick pies and it's the best of them among the chain offerings. But I still prefer to find a local independent pizza maker whenever I can. They are usually a LOT better than the chains, and I'd rather support an independent restauranteur any day.
Giordano's needs to open a store near me. They'd get all the local business here since there's nothing like it around these parts. If you're ever near Chicago and have the chance- try one.

IMHO all chain pizza sucks, but if I was forced to, I order Papa John's over most others, it's got a good crust, sauce is OK and toppings are toppings, except for GOOD real Italian sausage.
Scott..........Giordano's is pretty good (and expensive) as deep pan pizza goes..... but ANYWHERE in the Chicago area (read PIZZA MECCA) the mom & pop pizza places have fantastic pizza to satisfy anyone's Pizza Jones!! I will volunteer to be THE Official Pizza Guide when you and Scott come back next year!!
Pizza is a very personal choice, and I've had pizza in every corner of this country, but I can honestly say that I have only tried pizza from ONE place that was inedible - Tower Pizza in the Florida Keys !!! Took two bites and into the garbage......

We have a place right down the street called Fatso's Pizza. Great pie and great wings. Gotta do the 2 together with a regular cold brew. They do thick, thin, standard cuts, square cuts, whatever you want.
I also like good old Tombstone sometimes. It has its own special place in my heart and palette for some reason.
Usually, I get a dough ball from Streets of New York up the street (they make their dough fresh daily) and make some sauce and cook my own pie. You ever notice that if you really love food, you can outdo any restaraunt in your own kitchen or in your own yard at the BBQ?

Ok Look. I was born In Queens New York, grew up on Long Island New York. I remember when it was less than a dollar a slice. Im 42 years old. Pizza is big and round and flat unless you like sicilian style, its got plenty of sauce and plenty of cheese and not to much doe, and you eat the crust. You should fold each slice in half to eat it and the oil from the chees drips on your plate. I have lived in Florida, California and now Texas. Texas is know for barbeque not pizza. Papa Johns is ok. Papa Murphys is good to. Sabarros i like. But nothing is like pizza from up north. I dont know if its the different suppliers of flour and water and seasoning or what. Im not that picky but Dominoes, Peddlers, Pizza Hut, Cicis..... not even close to northern style pizza.

Can't beat pizza in Italy, although I have had some awesome stuff here in Switzerland. It's a totally different world than in the States (I do miss American pepperoni, though I got a fix in Sweden this weekend...)

I have been eating Tombstone pizza since they began selling them back in Medford, WI, more years ago than I wish to think about, but I will NEVER turn down a slice of a Tombstone pizza.

I disagree! My wife and I were in Italy last year and while the food was, as expected, AMAZING the pizza was a little weak. We had it at two different restraunts, and as funny as it sounds, the Irish pub in Rome where we got started drinking actually had the best pizza we ate while were were in Italy, and it wasn't really anything to write home about.
Those who live in North Texas (DFW area) should run....not walk...to Sanger to a place called "The Tomato" and get their Heavyweight pizza. Hands down the best pizza I've ever eaten! It used to be in Denton, but moved.
Since we are talking about food, and now that it the conversation has moved to Europe (Switzerland) specificially-
We spent some time there as well, and went to a Mexican restraunt in Geneva. We speak English and Spanish, but our waiter spoke only French--this was kind of funny, but not as funny as watching them give instructions to another couple in the restraunt on how to roll and eat a burrito!
But really, nowhere near as funny as when we ordered "Salsa" and our waiter had no clue what we were talking about. "Picante" seemed to get his attention....but all hope was lost when he came out with a bowl, YES a bowl of tobasco.

Everybody has their own tastes. What I have found in discussions with other Americans about European pizza in general is they expect it to be like American pizza, and it's not even close, from my perspective. I love it and I'm all about it though.

Pizza was invented by throwing all the leftovers on a crust and baking it in the oven... who knew!

Every once in a while I will buy a fresh ball of pizza dough at the local Italian market and bring it home for dinner (they use the good high gluten flour which makes for a chewy crust). Roll/stretch it out, place on heated pizza stone (yes we have one, nicely seasoned after 10 years). The sauce is simple, 1 can of Imported Cento tomatoes from the San Marzano region, crush them up in a pan with a little garlic, fresh basil, sea salt, pepper. Heat it through for about 5 minutes. Sauce the dough, sprinkle chunks of fresh buffalo mozzaralla, drop some fresh basil leaves on there, drizzle with some good extra virgin olive oil. Bake at 400 for 12 minutes.
Una fetta di cielo!!!!!
My wife says it's better than sex. (which for me, her husband, I'm not sure how to take).

If anyone is in Chicago try a place called Pequods. While there are many good places this is one of the top ten in my book. Plus it is close to the downtown area if you hop in a cab.

Had some while in Sicily 20+ years ago. Small mom & pop place. Was definately not american but was very good.
I like Papa Johns thin crust. Pizza Hut pan in store (delivery version sucks). Cousin Vinnys when getting delivery. Little Ceasars is a quick and cheap meal, just down the street. Had Giordanos pizza a couple of years ago when I was in Chicago and I liked it. We get LaRossa's fairly regular too. Two local chains are ok Marions and Cassanos. My wife works part time for Cassanos.
Oh, forgot, best cartoon character ever, Snoopy
