Ok. Here are the codes for the 298mm GM torque converters up to the electronic versions of the 4L60E.
1st digit
B: 250 and 350 transmission.
C: 200/2004R, 325-4L& Pre 1985 700R4 (27 spline)
D: 1985 & later 700R4 with 30 spline
2nd digit- Refers to the "K" factor, which is an engineering term that means the speed of one member divided by the square root of the torque on the same member. This is calculated at stall conditions. On a 298mm torque converter, you can multiply the "K" factor by 14.2574 to get the stall speed.
A = 142 = 2024
B = 140 = 1996
C = 135 = 1925
D = 130 = 1853
E = 115 = 1639
F = 110 = 1568
G = 100 = 1425
H = 97 = 1383
J = 89 = 1269
K = 85 = 1211
3rd digit-refers to the clutch type, capacity and travel in degrees
0 = No clutch
1 = 300ft/lb 43 degrees travel
2 = 240ft/lb 46 degrees travel
3 = 290ft/lb 44 degrees travel
4 = 160ft/lb 37 degrees travel
5 = 220ft/lb 35 degrees travel
6 = 195ft/lb 42 degrees travel
7 = 195ft/lb 30 degrees travel
8 = 300ft/lb 44 degrees travel
9 = 290ft/lb 44 degrees travel
A = 300ft/lb 29 degrees travel
B = 300ft/lb 44 degrees travel
C = 330ft/lb 28 degrees travel
4th digit refers to cover style, number of mounting lugs and method of welding on each lug
A = Open cover (no converter clutch) 3 lugs with one weld per lug (gas)
B = Open cover (no converter clutch) 3 lugs with 3 welds per lug (diesel)
C = Converter clutch type, 3 lugs with one weld per lug (gas)
D = Converter clutch type, 3 lugs with 180 degree weld on each lug (diesel)
E = Converter clutch type, 6 lugs with 180 degree weld on each lug (diesel)
F = Converter clutch type, 3 lugs, 245mm tyle lug
Hope this helps with decoding the converters.
By the way, the DCNF and DHHF converters for the later 4L60E trans have carbon fiber woven clutches in them and can be substituted back to an early 700. Just cannot use an earlier converter in a Pulse Width Modulated trans. Will KILL the clutch in the converter very fast.
