I was told by someone that as of this year there is no inspection required for cars 35 yrs and older in NC..
Anyone know for sure, or know what chapter and section I can look up to find this law?

Found it

SECTION 10. G.S. 20‑183.2 is amended by adding a new subsection to read:

"(a1) Safety Inspection Exception. – Historic vehicles, as defined in G.S. 20‑79.4(b)(17), shall not be subject to a safety inspection pursuant to this Article."

20‑79.4(b)(17) Historic Vehicle Owner. – Issuable for a motor vehicle that is at least 35 years old measured from the date of manufacture. The plate for an historic vehicle shall bear the word "Antique" unless the vehicle is a model year 1943 or older. The plate for a vehicle that is a model year 1943 or older shall bear the word "Antique" or the words "Horseless Carriage", at the option of the vehicle owner.

Well I meet the definition, my car is a historic vehicle (35 yrs or older) the Exception says nothing about requiring historic plates, only meeting the definition. :dunno: :fingersx:

I guess that means you have to have antique plates to not have a inspection, looks like it will not exclude daily drivers will have to have a inspection?

No standard plates are OK with no inspection...
I do not have historic plates, and I am in mno way limited in driving.

SECTION 10. G.S. 20‑183.2 states
"Historic vehicles, as defined in G.S. 20‑79.4(b)(17)shall not be subject to a safety inspection"

G.S. 20‑79.4(b)(17) defines a historic vehicle as "a motor vehicle that is at least 35 years old measured from the date of manufacture."

My car fits that definition.. (35 Years old)

In SECTION 10. G.S. 20‑183.2 (where it says no inspection is required) it says nothing about requiring historic plates, it only says to refer to the historic plates section to define a historic car (35 years old measured from the date of manufacture)

I that that was pretty cool too.

BUT DID YOU KNOW.......

That you dont even have to run your own plates.. Vanity historic plates are just fine. As long as you keep your registration and your real tag IN the car.

Red light cameras are a thing of the past. Not that I run them, but you never know.

Ya, I saw that too when I was trying to find the wording on this law.
It's kinda crazy that you don't even have to display the current plates, you just have to produce them if asked :rolleyes5

Where can you get some old plates...

I found mine at a flea market after much searching. Any good flea market will have at least one person selling old license plates and hubcaps and such junk.
