I sent this to Wilwood tech this AM. I'll poll the masses here with the same inquisition if anyone cares to weigh in. Thanks in advance:

I am hoping that you can assist me in selecting a proper master cylinder for my ’68 Camaro. Ideally I would like to choose one that will last through the current brake system install and mate well with the next but that may be wishful thinking.

Currently my car is factory Manual drum brakes.

I just bought a slightly used SSBC A123-1 system in part last night. I have purchased the spindles, 11” rotors/hubs and the single piston (72mm) iron calipers. The guy wanted to keep the 9” booster and Master Cylinder, Prop valve etc… We had a misunderstanding and I thought he was selling it all. Now I need to source a MC quickly to make the conversion. This conversion is to be temporary until I can install my big brakes.

My future system which I already own but cannot afford 18” wheels and tires to accommodate just yet is the Wilwood FSL4 4 piston calipers (PN# 120-7792-R & L) and 2 piece 14” x 1.25” rotors.

If it is possible for you to recommend a Master Cylinder that will be a good choice to work with the 72mm Single piston/11” rotor for the time being and later excel with the 4 Piston/14” I would be very appreciative.

I have also yet to buy pads for the 14” system. I would like to get good street performance but keep the wheels clean. It is more of a show car than anything but I want it to work as intended when driven hard. If there was a do everything pad that warms up quick, doesn’t make excess noise and kept the wheels and rotors clean that is the one I would want I think. I don’t know if the car will see much Auto-X or performance driving events but I would like it to be able if the opportunity is there.

As for weight etc… it is a typical ’68 Camaro, iron SBC with factory AC, PS. I will eventually switch to rear disc, but do not know what system yet. That will probably occur before I run the 14” system or be installed at the same time.

Please provide part numbers for your recommended Master Cylinder and brake pads and feel free to suggest a rear system as well if you like.

Thank you,

Robert

My guess is that they, or someone else, will recommend part #260-8556 (add P for polished, or BK for black) if you are going with a power booster setup. I think you'll find that the power brakes get the 1 1/8" bore MC, while the manual brakes get the 7/8" bore MC (#260-9439).

Thank you for the response.

I was told by SSBC to run a 1" bore for manual. I am not sure what the bore of the vacuum boosted MC included in the kit was.

All I know is bigger bore = more volume, smaller bore = more pressure. That said, smaller bores can run short on volume and fail to keep up with piston movement and retraction if they aren't "big enough".

I once saw a guy listing several MC's in what I thought were weird sizes and I wondered why he would have so many. Now I know why. They were doing some tuning.
