History new front Wilwood 10.75 front Dynalite kit has been on sdince winter car has only rolled around the garage.
Well attacking the leaking seal issue Wilwood tech was no help other than saying it shouldn't leak and never heard of that as an issue. I found a couple of things the seals Wilwood uses now are National 40401s and look like rough leather. The sealing surface has mop like fingers I think are wicking grease out as well as not riding far enough out on the spindle's seal surface-barely past the bevel. See picture for the texture.
I had an OLD Wilwood kit for earlier second gen Camaro/Firebirds that had an all rubber seal with the metal coil on the inside like a timing cover seal National 32541. Same dimensions-maybe the seal rides further out but not much. I'm going to give that one a try.
The factory rotor has a 0.065 bigger hole and uses a dual lipped seal 8871 (the last one with the red on it) that sticks out further on the seal surface so would be a better deal if they machined just 0.032 off each side to fit it. Might have to do that if I can't get a good seal-would take a big lathe chuck to grab outside the wheel stud area.
Second issue -friend put them on the spindles originally so I didn't check the free play myself was more looking at the leaking seal when I pulled it off. Putting it back together there is taper about .200 wide between the thread and the surface on the spinlde the outher bearing rides on. Well the Wilwood and stock washers both hit the taper before they get the bearings tight enough to remove free play. I had to grind a chamfer in the washer to let it slide up the taper to tighten it to remove the free play.
Anyone else had this much fun? Now I'm used to having to make Pontiac stuff or 409 stuff fit but Chevy Camaro stuff and from a big name like Wilwood!
