I Think I'm Missing Something

Literally & figuratively. (I apologize in advance if this is an ignorant/newbie question) In the picture below, in the red boxed in area. Is there something missing here? I pulled the plate the previous owner riveted in place where the heater assembly was. I just picked up an assembly and noticed the the blower motor portion will extend into this area where there seems to be a void. What am I missing here?

It's missing thr side cowl panels. Looks like bothside are missing.
