Now that the 63 f100 is done and the 46 is getting close, Its time to start our next custom. I'm calling it "BLUE PEARL" because of the color of paint (hint hint). Ok more about the car, It's a 1950 Chevy 2dr sedan with a 216ci and 3 on the tree. This thing is bone stock to the max, but that’s going to change. So far the plain is for a LS-2 or LS-3, New IFS with adjustable coils and 4 link rear with adjustable coils, and some kind of Grey Interior. More on that later when we get closer. Four wheel disk brakes and other new goodies. Here are a few pictures of the car before tear down tomorrow.

Well the tear down is going pretty good. We have the body off the frame and most of the stuff is off the body. I dont know if you can tell by the pictures but the floors in this car are so nice. Im glad for once that no floor pan's have to be done and that the rear window tray is also un cut. Enjoy the pictures.

Everything is off the frame and ready for blasting. All my stuff is on the way from TCI. So by the time a get done I should have all the parts to build a Rolling chassis.

Man it was a HOT day for sandblasting, but I got it done. We moved it to the booth and finished removing the brackets I will not need and did some final sanding. I didn’t want the frame to flash rust so I went ahead and DP90 then Primed. All I have to do now is wait for my TCI stuff to get here then paint. During the drying times we finished getting the body ready for some blasting.

Today was another cold 94 degree day In Tennessee so I got most of the sandblasting done on the 50 Chevy. The sheet metal on this car is in really nice shape. The drivers side floor pan has only a few small pin holes and the spare tire area is where most of the rust is. So over all Im very happy with the body and the progress. Good thing my dad likes to help out. The heat about killed me....lol.

Well so far everything is going great on the 50 chevy. We just about have the body all cleaned up and ready for dp90 epoxy. I've been metal working the fenders were the old lady had hit everything with them..lol. Other then that the body is in great shape. For once I dont have to fix a roof too. I can live fixing the spare tire area. Heres are some pictures.

Yea so far its moving pretty good. Today we got the DP laid down and I hope to have the doors ready tomorrow. I wasnt going to spray the Inside but I wanted to finish off what was left of the DP but I still need to go back and do everthing Inside the or behind the fenders.

r.a.w.rods
06-17-2011, 07:34 PM
Thanks guys. We are going to leave it tall, but we are going to put a one piece windshield in. All the body trim will stay but the old GRAVEL SHIELDS on the side of the fenders will be deleted. Under the Hood may do some engine covers and clean everything up but will see how that goes. Ive talked to the customer about it and so far it looks like he's ok with it. O and there will be bigger wheels too. Maybe In the 17's or 18's. I'll know more when the body goes back on the frame.

It's become reasonable self-defense these days for one to Google one's self, just to see what others might--the good thing is that you can of course change search results by posting new material...

I would have been happy with the Chevy as it was, for a couple weeks anyway... It's a perfect starter!

We got the door's all cleaned up and In DP90 today. I also decide to weld the hood up and make it a one piece hood. Im also getting ride of the front and back emblem's. Here are some pictures from today.

It takes more time but we like to sand the back of the door and prime them all over that way rust will not come back. I never did like when just the out side parts were painted and not the middle.

Here is the hood. I made sure the hood was lined up in the middle first then tack welded ever so offten trying not to warp the hood. I also drilled the emblem holes our just a little bigger to put a small steel washer in so I could weld the hole up. I did this because its hard to get behind the hood to hold it in place. I dont do it this way offten but it works.

All the welding is done on the hood so I started working on the back side. Im going to take the brace out so I can sand and paint under it. I'll put S.S. bolts In later to take place of the old rivets. Before the rain set In we were able to get the front sheet metal apart and blast most of it. Looks like one side of the Inner fender is going to need some rust repair.

Man it looks great already! I loved following the 63 and am excited to watch this one too! I'll have to drive the Stang up to your neck of the woods some time! I'm down in Chattanooga.

Quick question; I was recently doing some small patch panels (slowly tacking with a mig, taking my time, and this time I tried wiping with a cool damp rag every few tacks to keep the heat down). I can weld it up with out warping the panel but when I grind it down, then metal finish, the bead always seems to sink just a touch to where I can't sand it flush and smooth. Now obviously looking at that hood ( and all your other work!!) you've got this down pat. Do you have any suggestions or advice? Would putting too much heat in while grinding do that you think?

Thanks so much Richard! Can't wait to see this one go together!

Well I'll try to tell you how I do it and what I have learned. It may not be what others see or do (I’m no expert). Ok when I weld it tack one spot and move on a few Inch's, the longer the panel the more I space it out, the shorter the panel then do a few then stop until you can touch it by hand or just wait until its cold then come back. I don’t use water or a air gun because some times if it cool's to fast it can pull it down but not always. I use air or water for oil caning on larger panels. One other thing when welding panels together I don’t like to butt them tight together, if you don’t have a small space (gap) the metal when it gets hot will expanded and push together and it either goes up or down. This will make it harder to take your hammer and dolly and tap it flat.

Ok now on the grinding. I may be that after you get your weld ground down you need to take your hammer and dolly and tap the metal back in place. If you do this take your time and don’t try to tap it all out the first hit. When you move metal one way it has to go some where else, that were some oil caning can take place. Only other thing I can think of is you may be grind too much out and your leaving a valley in the metal, you don’t want to grind all your weld out. When I grind I also make long passes, I don’t stay on one spot until its smooth. I move the grinder In long strokes and just let the grinder do the work. If you look in my picture you can see my Hammer and Dolly on the hood. Don’t forget that pictures also make things look better then they are. I still have a few small places that need to be taped up and a small skim coat of kitty hair. I like ever coat kitty hair because it seals the weld up. then if it needs some fill I'll put some down and sand it until its a thin as I can get it but still be straight. I hope this helps, alot of it just take time to get the hang of it. I know I keep learning new things every day.

See my hammer on the hood. I spot then check then hammer.

Today we worked on the rear axle. We wanted something with disk brakes, 3:73 or 4:10 posi and a good spline count. I also need something around 56"or 57" wide from WMS to WMS. So for this project we are going with a 8.8 explorer. The one we picked up has a 4:10 posi with disk and 31 splines. Only down side is it's 59.6" WMS to WMS and C-Clips to hold the axle's in but its disk so o well. I know most people around here love there 9" but I have beat on the 8.8's and love them. I also know its easier to change the gears out on the 9" but come on 8.8's are not that bad. So moving on (I like being outside the box...lol). I will be cutting the axle down 3" to center it in the car and this will give me 56.6".
Here are my steps and just how I like to do it.
Tear down what fun.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/07/50chevy354-1.jpg

Next was drilling out the plug welds and pulling the axle tube out after I mark all my straight lines. I do this so I dont have to cut the axle and try and get the tubs lined back up and weld because it can move. So I find it easier to take it out and then cut your 3" off. Then press the axle back in and check all your line's.

Next was to cut the 3" off. Tomorrow I will reinstall and weld the tubs all the way around and weld the plug welds up.

Still moving on the 50 chevy, it's that slow stuff now. I was looking at a spot on the door I did not like so I cut it out. Im glad I did because I found some hidden rust that needed to be taken care of. I treated everything in the door and then replace what I cut out with new metal.

I also had a lead seam under the door that had a place I didnt like so I removed all the lead and welded the gap up.

I finished welding the patch in and filling all the holes we will not be needing, now I'll move to the other side and I can move on to block sanding.

Hey guys I wanted to pick your brains. Im getting ready to set up the fuel system for the 50 and Im looking at a new tank they have for the car. It's a new POLYETHYLENE styl tank and is already set up for a Intank pump. I just wanted to ask you guy's if you think a 190 liter per hour pump. is ok or would you go with the bigger kit they have, its a 250 liter per hour pump. I dont see our customer adding anything down the road (he likes stock) but just wanted to get your alls in put. I'll be running the corvette filler/reg on a stock 04 GTO ls1, do you guys run ADJUSTABLE FUEL PRESUURE REGULATORS with your setups stock or just let the corvetter filler do the work?

Well I got the frame as a roller today. I finished welding the 4 link bar on the back and the top hat's for the control arm's are done. I put my 300c wheels on for rollers to see how it would look with 18's on it. I didnt have a deep wheel to mock up the back with the Narrowed rear axle so I turned the 300c wheel around and put it on just to see the deep off set. I know its not pretty but I think when the customs wheels are done its going to look bad a$$. O and the wheels are just 7 1/2 wide and there is more room to spare for a wider lip in the back!!. So what do you guys think so far?

Well now that I’m back In town I can get back to work on the 50. I set the ls-1 in the car and didn’t like how the mounts placed it so I’ve been making my own. I have pushed the engine back about 2" and raised it 1" to clear the stock oil pan and so I can keep the A/C and Alt In the stock locations they came in. I want them low so I can build a custom engine cover later. This also keep everything from being too low to the ground that way if we do Air Ride later its already up and out of the way for a full frame drop. Ok moving on to my custom trans mount.

First I cut out some plates to weld to the TCI cross member I have. I don’t have a CNC so everything is done by hand wish I had one!!
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/08/50chevy408-1.jpg

Then made sure is was square and tacked together.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/08/50chevy410-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/08/50chevy412-1.jpg

Maybe not the way most would do it but it clears the pan and was dead on.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/08/50chevy415-1.jpg

Now that the engine was center I wanted to set the body down to see what or how much I was going to need to cut out of the fire wall and the trunk. As you can see in the pictures it needs alot of cutting, 9" up from the bottom and 10" from center of fire wall out on both sides.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/08/50chevy417-1.jpg

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/08/50chevy419-1.jpg

Same for the rear, I need to cut 2" up In the trunk to clear the Coil over cross member I Installed and remove the spare tire area.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/08/50chevy423-1.jpg

I still have more to cut tomorrow but you can see how its starting to come together. After I get the engine to fit I will build a custom fire wall around the engine.

Very classy looking and it does not look like it ate up alot of foot room...

Thanks, Thats one of the main things I have been fighting with is the foot room. I think its going to work out pretty good. Only thing that sucks is I have to make a new trans and drive shaft tunnel. I guess thats the price I pay for using a 4l60E and moving it up 1" to keep of off the ground. I should have some new pictures tomorrw of the new tunnel.

r.a.w.rods
08-23-2011, 06:20 PM
Almost got the firewall and new trans tunnel done. One of the big things is trying to keep room on the driver side for the gas pedal. I made the tunnel kick in some when it gets to the firewall so that the owners foot can rest easy on the pedal.

Here you can see the new trans tunnel to clear the 4l60e and driveshaft. I made sides then the top.

As you can see we also have to move the Floorbrace up.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/08/50chevy482-1.jpg

Next I went back and finished cutting out the firewall now that I have my colunm marked and the holes for my Inner fenders.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2011/08/50chevy495-1.jpg

Here if you look you can see were I had to tuck the driver side in then roll the metal back up to meet the tunnel. I did this to add more foot room for the gas pedal. I dont like things uneven but I like comfort more. I think In the end I'll like the room more.

Thanks man, Yea the owner came by today and loved it. He has even decide to go with buckets and a custom center console. So I’m happy too.

I finished welding the firewall up and the tunnel so I was able to sit the body back down. I didn’t like how the TCI 4 Link had the axle center line back so I redid the bars and moved the rear up 3/4", Made a big deferent’s . I also put a fender on just to get a ideal of how I want to do my Inner fenders. I’m looking forward to making the Inners and the Engine Covers.

Well we almost have all the floor stuff knocked out so were almost ready to prep the bottom of the car for paint. On the out side we have decide to shave off the rear fender trim that runs on the top of the rear qt's. We removed all the led and rust and made new metal strips to fill the voids. Tomorrow we should have it all done and ready to mock the front up so we can start work on the Custom Inner Fenders.

Well I have started fitting the seats in the Chevy and so far they have went in without any problems. I took the rear floor brace out of the 2004 GTO and put it in the 50 Chevy so that the stock seats would lock into place like the factory. The rear back rest was also easy to install, just mark and cut the holes in the package tray and right in they went. Its almost as if they were made for the car..lol. I have also started working on the center console that will run from the back to the front.

Its coming along nice. Still plenty of room back there even with those comfortable seats. Are you going to make the rear side panels go straight down or make them with an arm rest like in a convertable and build them out to meet the seat? It would be a nice place to put some cup holders. Nice work.

I’m trying to keep the inside just as clean as the outside so I made a box to hold the Lokar E-brake in the center console. I didn’t want it to just sit on top of the rounded hump so that’s why I’m doing it this way. This also helped me keep it tucked up under the floor off the drive shaft. I then fabed a braked to hold the two cable's at the back. The holes are taped so all you have to do is bolt it right in. I even welded the nuts under the box so it only takes one person to install the E-brake from inside.

Ok got the AFCO Radiator bolted in and put the hood hinges on. Then I started fitting the hood. Over all its ok but I think I may have to trim the fenders some to get a nice gap around the edges. I knew it was close when I took it off so I guess I know what I’m working on next but for now some pictures with the hood on.

Looks awesome - are the headers going to clear the inner fenders and firewall?

Its been so busy in the shop its been hard to get pictures but here are some updates. The Headers Clear really good. They are Sanderson Hugger Headers for LS Engines. I made my Inner fenders with the Headers on and the steering in place so that I would not have a problem after paint.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/08/50chevy672-1.jpg

I decided to keep the front under the hood open for maximum airflow (this will be driven). I took the stock support bar and welded the seam up and boxed it in for a cleaner look. Then made welded tabs on the bar to hold the A/C condenser.

Because we don’t have room under the dash for the A/C unit I decided to hang it in the trunk. I went with the Super Gen II so I could get all the air to the front in this small car.

I've been out of town so now its time to get this thing done. I have started the Engine cover for the LS1 and I’m going to try and cover as much as I can.

I started with the two side covers first. I made legs that go down the side and bolt to the heads to keep it as firm as possible. I had to make two more legs for the middle as well.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/50chevy20726_zpseeea89c7-1.jpg

From the side you can see what I’m going for. I’m trying get the pulleys hidden as well.
https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/50chevy20729_zpsa1d178ac-1.jpg

Next I made some end caps for the cover to help close things off.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2012/09/50chevy20736_zps6e47ae1c-1.jpg

Next was making a center cover. I rolled the metal of the center cover just so it would not look too flat. I’ve got some wire cloth mesh that will go in it later after I get the sides done, but for now you get the ideal.

I have also decide to start using the E-Z clip A/C system from Eaton. I like that the #10/#8/#6 hose are smaller and you can crimp them your self or cut the hose off and reuse the a/c fittings. I also like that I can get them to make anything I need. Heres a quick mock up.

My customer decided that he did not want the bottom of the car painted like the top because after he shows it he wants to drive it. So I primed and sealed the bottom then under coated it. I used the SEM stuff made for tinting and loved how it turned out.

You can do it your self or have the your paint store do it. You MUST have a paint shaker to do it yourself cant mix with just a paint stick.
Here is te PDF on the stuff to help you out. http://www.tcpglobal.com/detailsupplydepot/docs/Rock-It%20Liner%20TDS.pdf

I've been lurking here for a few years, and I remember seeing your business name in your signature. My wife and I went out for a horse show in Powell, and I saw your sign as we drove by. Kinda an odd chance sorta thing.

Its been so busy in the shop I’ve just not had time to post update's on the 50. So here's what's been going on, wet sanding and buffing and starting to line up the doors on the car. Lining up the door on a 50's car is a pain but I think they have come out pretty good.

https://static1.pt-content.com/images/pt/2013/08/50chevy1057_zpsc1c7db46-1.jpg (http://s223.photobucket.com/user/rawrods/media/50%20chevy/50chevy1057_zpsc1c7db46.jpg.html)

I've been working on the interior "center console" so that I can get stuff wired up and start this thing for the first time. Radiator and condenser are in. To keep the a/c line's small I’m using the Eaton E-Z Clip system. Lines are easy to make and route were you need them.

lol Im sure there are a few things I cant do. I just got to the point a few years ago that I was tired of sending customer cars or my own out for things like exhaust or interior and then they come back and its not what they said they were going to do. I've even had them come back and small chips here or wiring loose or bolts loose and for big money it should not be that way. So I figure I can do it just as bad for less...lol. That's what drives me too try new things.

Trunk is about done, still have to put trim were the trunk hinge come's down.

The console is coming out pretty good. I've still got to cover the back between the rear seats and put trim up front. I made a leather shifter boot to match the seats and used billet a/c vents from vintage air. Also there are soft white led lights behind the console to light the floor and under the dash. I didn't like the speakers in the kick panels so we cut out a place on both sides of the console and then domed some stainless steel mesh to cover them up.

Hard to see good in the picture but I took the lights out of the vintage air control and installed blue led lights to match the VHX Dakota Digital gauge.

Looks cool! What material did you make the console out of? Looks like sheet polystyrene/ABS; I've used some of that before to make a model.

The car came out exceptional guys! We are very proud to know that our suspension is underneath such a great build. I will hit up Rod Authority to see if they can do a follow up article on the build.

Sounds good Jason, look like we should have everything done by May for the NSRA show here in Knoxville Tn, at Chilhowee Park. Love the Suspension.

What a week in Louisville. So many badass cars were in attendance at the Street Rod Nationals but the Blue Pearl definitely stood out among the elite builds on hand. We shot the car in an open field yesterday and interviewed Aaron for a video we will put together about the car. Aaron, I really can't say enough about the build quality and choice of colors throughout. I can't wait to see what's in store with your Dad's '53. Heck, even the bug will be a fun project to watch come together. It was great to finally meet you guys, glad you made it up to the show.

Jason the pictures look great! Thank you for taking the time to shoot the car and to do an interview. We really enjoyed meeting you guys at the show. I can't wait to meet up again at the next show.

I also wanted to let everyone know the car took home The prestigious PPG award for best use of color. A big thanks goes out to the owner Ron for letting me build the car.
