took my 1979 trans am auto crossing today.
and people couldnt believe I had the car there
young guy said "i see these old cars at the drag strip but not here"
saw 90s and up F-Bodies, Vettes, Hondas, BMWs,
Sadly I didnt do the car justice cause frist time out.
got alot of tips from smart and good guys
sadly one thing IS A MUST to change on the car is stock seats and belts are not the best to hold you in place cause I was getting pulled around inside the car

I wouldn't really call it beat up anymore. But I do agree. :)

Try this website...they make a neat locking device for the regular seatbelt that will keep you anchored in your seat....

You should have seen the strange look when my 71 Monte Carlo was out at the cone killing.

Sounds like a blast! You have any pics? I would love to see the old TA out beatin it up!

I know what you mean about seats, that was the first thing I noticed when I did wheels, tires & suspension all in one shot, I took the off-ramp by my house and was like "holy sh*t!" as it flatly stayed glued into the turn, then a second later as I accelerated into the loop I was like "HOLY SH*T!" as my @ss started sliding out of the seat sideways and it felt like I was going to go flying straight out the window! Sadly, I have yet to remedy this problem...if I ever get around to re-doing my interior...

Anyway congrats on getting out there!

I know the feeling. haha A lot of people at my auto-x didn't expect me to run or do too well... and I wasn't near last! Finished in roughly the middle of the pack and that made me extremely happy. The second oldest car was a '90 NA 300zx. Most were miatas, there was a boxtser...I love (almost) showin' those people up with my 3500+ lb car that's wider and longer as well :smoke:

Great job getting you and your car out there!

Yea, Trans Am seats aren't much on lateral support. I find myself either bracing myself with my knee against the door, or sometimes I allow myself to go back to the bad habit of grabbing the bottom of the seat with my left hand.

Forgot to say... at least you got your car on a track! That's awesome! And I have Procar Rally by Scat seats and they have pretty good side bolsters; I didn't notice myself sliding around at all.

One more thing...sorry I already took the username you were trying to get. No I'm not. Well, ok, maybe a little. ;)

I've been a stranger on this site for quite awhile so I don't think I've seen your car previously, but just so you and anyone else reading this knows, I still have my TA and hopefully she will be coming out of her hiatus soon...so I plan on getting back into wrenching on and driving her again, and I would love to try the autocross thing too!

Looking forward to hearing more from you and about your TA!

I've run a few oddballs in autocross, people in our region know me more by my car than name. The 67 El Camino and 00 Dakota R/T are the two that surprise most people. Especially since I was using the Dakota to tow the Elky, now I am running the Dakota until I finish the 81 Camaro. The Elky did fairly well, but was an underdog in CP. The Camaro and the 03 Mustang GT (sold now) are the only two normal cars I have autocrossed. I started with a 92 Achieva SCX W41, so I guess oddballs are in my nature.
