View Full Version : Is there a list of 200 tread wear tires/Manufactures
So far I found Toyo's R888 & Nitto. What else?
I looked at BFG since they sponsor but could not find a 200 tread wear tire???

CDog, Toyo and Nitto come from the same. The Nitto Nt-05 is 200 and the R888 is 100. Kumbo has a 180. Goodyear has a 220. I was trying the same thing and found several companies with a +-200 treadware but not in my fat tire size 275-17 and 295-18. If you run anything below a 275-17 you will have more to choose from.
I will try to find my list and post it. If you go to the manufactures pages (not the retail sites) you can read the size and spec sheets to find what you are looking for. I did notice at the track this past weekend (with BMW's and S2000 such cars) Some of the non mainstream companies offer 140 to 220 treadware tires. Problem is that I don't think they have the bigger sizes.
Good luck
Brett

Awesome thank you! I've got 18 inch Forgelines on order. I should be able to fit a 245/18 up front and 335/18 on rear. The websites are not very clear.....????
Right now the car has 245/18 & 325/19 on rear.

The 3 most popular I have seen over the past year in the 200+ category are:
NT-05 (200) - very common and well priced
BFG KDW (300, but many say its TW rating is grossly overstated and more of a 200ish tire -- the DSE guys, Finch, many others run this... and they win)
Falken RT-615 (200) - been seeing this more lately and getting good reviews http://www.falkentire.com/Tires/Passenger-Car/Azenis-RT-615K-14
As Brett stated, it comes down to sizing and availability for your setup. Nitto had the exact sizes I wanted, so I went NT-05.

Nitto NT05
Falken 615K
Michelin PS2's are usually 220
Bridgestone REO50A are also usually around the same, based on size.
Check tirerack.com, and search by the sizes you are after, and the UTQG is listed for each one that is available.
Call me if you want, I can help.

What size front tire are you running? Bummer that the nt-05 only goes up to 315. I've got room for more.

Great tire no doubt.. I had a set for about 10k miles on a previous car. I personally could never justify buying them for the premium they command.

Yeah that may steer you in a direction right there. I run the 255/40/17 front. I get some rubbing but I'm pretty low up front.
What size are your Forgelines front and rear?

BFG needs to bring back the g-Force T/A KD. That was a great tire, never got why they canceled it.
On topic here are the tires I know:
BF Goodrich g-Force T/A KD(200)
Goodyear Eagle F1 Supercar G 2 (220)
Goodyear Eagle F1 asymmetric (240)
Hankook Ventus V12 evo (280) also one of the best wet traction tires out.
Dunlop Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec(200)
Pirelli Pzero (220)

Based on your wheel sizes, I'll bet you end up with the KDWs in 275 and 335.

Good info thanks. Wonder why they show 300 tw?
Any BFG reps here to explain this?

The Dunlops are the best tire on that list, but unfortunately a 275 is the widest one they offer.
Still, I'd take a 275 Dunlop over some of those others in much wider sizes.

I talked to a tire rep a while back (ok, maybe 5+ years) and asked him why a 50,000 mile tire from brand x had a tw of 520 and brand y's was 680?
He told me there was not a industry or government regulated standard on tw. that each company rated the tire as they seen fit off the rest of their product line. so you could compare tires with in brands using tw, but it was not a good tool for comparing different brands.
does anyone know if there is now a industry standard for tread-ware?

275 tires keep you in the STU class in SCCA too ;)

No, there still is no industry standard.

Here is what UTQG (Uniform Tire Quality Grade, or tread wear) is by definition off something I have here in the shop:
"The tread-wear grade is a relative figure based of wear of a tire during a 7200-mile-on-vehicle test compared to a reference tire. The higher the number, the longer it will likely last. "300" indicates that the tire should last three times longer that the reference tire which scores 100."
Based off that, it all depends on what the manufacture determines their 100 rated UTQG tire to be. Leaves a lot open to speculation, if you ask me.

I've been very happy with my set of Star Specs.

Well, there's always the Ecsta XS.
I once wrote a note on BFG's facebook page asking for a more aggressive version of the KDW2. BFG was nice enough to send a response and I received this:
Brett, thanks for the support with your Mustang and TransAm and since you speak BFG-shorthand, let's delve into your question of grip versus Treadware ratings. The grip comes from a combination of the construction techniques, the internal materials and of course the compound of the tire. How you use the elements is the real key. The g-Force T/A KDW is built in a very unique way that allows us to use two different tread compounds on the tire; on the inner half a compound tuned for wet capability on the outer half one tuned for dry. That outer compound, coupled with the large shoulder blocks and some very interesting manufacturing techniques, allows this tire to be good in the wet and awesome in the dry. To the extent that it's the tire that Samuel Hübinette uses in drifting in his Dodge Challenger, the tire used at Miller Performance Training Center - home of the Ford Racing Mustang Driving School and the tire of choice for the Ultimate Street Car Challenge last year. So treadware ratings have little to do with grip, in the world of BFGoodrich as we can put a little mileage in your pocket too. . . .
Nevermind that the BFG tire of choice referenced here was actually the R1 from the 2009 OUSCI.
While it's nice they have confidence in their product, it does bother me that they seem to be resting on their laurels. The KDW is becoming dated and BFG will need to do something if they want to keep competing in the 180-200 treadwear events that they sponsor. For instance, the E-max Challenger has no business outrunning either of the DSE cars at a Goodguys autocross . . . the Advan Neova AD08 had a lot to do with that instance.
Anyway, I'd still love to see a slightly more aggressive version of the KDW2.
Treadwear rating is a good rough estimation of grip even if it isn't perfect.

Well, there's always the Ecsta XS.
XS is 180 treadwear, and many of the BFG sponsored events are 200tw limited. :(
It's unfortunate because the Kumho XS is one of the few really fantastic tires available in "pro touring" sizes... even worse is that even the mediocre tires are abandoning the bigger 17" sizes, so you're left with really crappy tires as the only choice to run on if you have something like a 17x11 wheel.

I run PS2's . They are 220tw and I like them for a street tire. I ran them for the RTTS event , then 2 weeks later I was back at the same track with Hoosier R6's (40tw) and ran 1.5 sec faster.

Because Mopars are so ****ty that there is no way possible for them to win an event huh?

I don't think it's about that. I think it comes down to the fact that blue cars are always faster than yellow cars, all other factors being equal :)

PS2 is a great tire, and you being within 1.5 sec vs R6's is really impressive. It's just its price is so much higher than the alternatives. Did you make any tuning/suspension changes other than swapping tires, Vin?

No, I only meant that the DSE cars are more aggressively prepared. Specifically, I was referencing the '10 (edited, mistakenly wrote '09) OC Goodguys autocross.
I'm sure you have more of an appreciation for what went into the E-max than I do, but just look at the power output and tire widths of both the DSE 2nd gen and the E-max to see what I mean.

You mean the May 2010 event where Hotchkis vehicles took 3 of the four events? I don't know why you would find it all that surprising, Mary's car was consistently faster than the DSE cars and there was a DSE built car that was an exact clone of Kyle's car at the Scottsdale event I won.
Arron, the Hotchkis R&D tech that was driving the car is a very accomplished driver, and the Emax is a very capable car. Ask Mary. Sometimes less is more.

Yes, I meant 2010. Your average Goodguys peanut contains 3 long 180+ degree near constant radius turns. Maximum grip, and therefore the coefficient of friction between the tires and the road, is a huge deal.
Speaking of Mary, she also runs a tire I think the BFG folks should be concerned about: the Kumho Ecsta XS.
Anyway, you can make all the comparisons you'd like . . . the more you look the harder it is to try to talk down the DSE cars.

That Kumho and the Falken RT615K are probably 2 of the better tires:

Maier Racing is killing DSE at the events I attend, and he has the 615K. Ive decided I need new tires, and ill probably go with the Falkens or the NT05's.
The G-force TA KD was an amazing tire, the KDW is hard as a rock and juts flat out not that grippy no matter how Michelin wants to market them.

No matter what anyone says, BFG has to step up and get some 17" and 18" sizes from 295 to 315 or they will never see me buying tires from them.
It is sad that they can't make them and even sadder is the excuse that they would only sell so many. A run of 4,000 would seem easy to sell and worth the setup time when you look at what we would pay.
